The Charlotte Bobcats: What can they do in the draft to fix the franchise? Stuck
Posted on June 10, 2012 at 01:37 PM.

So I'm from Charlotte so obviously I follow the Bobcats. I've heard quite a few rumors about what they may do with the #2 pick this year and wanted to get some feedback and see what you think they should do. Remember, this is a franchise in DIRE need of the least bit of hope.

I for one, think the first thing to do would be to hire Jerry Sloan. But this is about the draft, so here we go:

Rumor #1
The Bobcats draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Positives: He's a solid player with a ton of potential. Can be an incredible defender in the league.

Negatives: Not much of a scorer yet and the Bobcats definitely need someone who can put up some points. I think he'd be better with a team that already has an identity.

Bobcats Lineup
PG Kemba Walker
SG Gerald Henderson
SF MKG
PF Tyrus Thomas or Biyombo
C Biyombo or BJ Mullens

Rumor #2

The Bobcats trade the #2 pick to Cleveland for the #4 pick and the #24 pick.

Positives: Bobcats still get a top 5 pick with an additional first rounder. They obviously have needs all across the board, and this way they could fill those needs with two first rounders.

However, if Cleveland thinks they can get MKG anyways because CHA and WAS passes on him, this deal would not make sense for them and they would back off.

No negatives for the Bobcats in this scenario IMO. They could still draft Harrison Barnes or Thomas Robinson at the #4.

Cleveland Lineup
PG Kyrie Irving
SG Anthony Parker/Manny Harris
SF MKG
PF Tristan Thompson
C Anderson Varejao

Bobcats Lineup
PG Kemba Walker
SG Gerald Henderson
SF Harrison Barnes* or Corey Maggette
PF Thomas Robinson* or Biyombo
C Fab Melo* if he's still available at #24

Rumor #3

Bobcats trade: #2 pick
Kings trade: Tyreke Evans, #5 pick

Positives: Charlotte gets a great young player with a lot of potential in Tyreke and STILL get a top 5 pick. This would be an incredible deal for them, because then they could still possibly get Harrison Barnes and have a young core of Kemba Walker, Tyreke, and Harrison. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Negatives: I don't think Sacramento wants to get rid of Evans that badly.

Sacramento Lineup
PG Isaiah Thomas
SG Marcus Thorton or Terrence Williams
SF MKG
PF Jason Thompson
C Demarcus Cousins

Bobcats Lineup
PG Kemba Walker
SG Tyreke Evans
SF Harrison Barnes* if still available (possibly Gerald Henderson)
PF Tyrus Thomas or Biyombo
C Biyombo or Andre Drummond (if they draft him instead of Barnes)

Rumor #4
Please remember I am not making up these rumors, it's just from stuff I have read. Just to remind you so you know before you read the following:

Bobcats trade: #2 pick, Tyrus Thomas, Corey Maggette
Grizzlies trade: Rudy Gay, (and possibly OJ Mayo)

Positives: Bobcats get a borderline All-Star in Gay who has experience putting franchises on his back to build them up and OJ Mayo who IMO just needs a change of scenery before he hits his stride in the NBA. Not to mention, both are young with a lot of potential.

For Memphis, they get MKG who could be an absolute star in the NBA and who has no history of injury like Rudy does and with the #25 pick they have, they will be drafting OJ's replacement. (They did try to get rid of him before after all). With Tyrus Thomas they get a good energy guy to come off the bench (though he would probably be amnestied). With Maggette they get a savvy veteran who could be a solid role player for the 1 year left on his contract.

Grizzlies Lineup
PG Michael Conley
SG #25 pick or Tony Allen
SF MKG
PF Zach Randolph
C Marc Gasol

Bobcats Lineup
PG Kemba Walker
SG Gerald Henderson or OJ Mayo (possibly trade Henderson)
SF Rudy Gay
PF Biyombo
C BJ Mullens

Rumor #5
Bobcats trade: #2 pick and Kemba Walker
Warriors trade: Stephen Curry and #7 pick

Positives: Warriors get rid of Curry who has recently been plagued by injuries and receive Kemba Walker as his replacement who is healthy and quicker with more potential.
Also draft MKG and have their SF of the future.
Charlotte receives the hometown kid who they love and has some potential and is a definite sharp shooter. Charlotte maybe looks to trade up to #5 with the Kings for the #5 pick for Harrison Barnes or he possibly slips to #7. (I know I use Harrison a lot, but we all know Jordan wants to draft a Tar Heel).

Warriors lineup:
PG Kemba Walker
SG Klay Thompson
SF MKG
PF David Lee
C Andrew Bogut

Bobcats lineup:
PG Stephen Curry
SG Gerald Henderson or Jeremy Lamb*
SF Corey Maggette or Harrison Barnes*
PF Tyrus Thomas or Biyombo
C Biyombo or Mullens

Of course, lineups could be different depending on who they sign in Free Agency. And I often have Tyrus Thomas or Biyombo, because I for one am full expecting them to amnesty Thomas if they are unable to trade him.

These are the most popular rumors I've seen, what do you think and what would you do if you were in Michael Jordan's situation?

Personally, if I had all of these to choose from, I would be torn between the Sacramento and Memphis scenarios. I don't think they could go wrong with either and it looks like a win-win for all sides involved. The Cleveland deal seems okay as well and is fair for both sides.

Who cares, why even make a post about this??????

The Cleveland deal makes the most sense to me. They need players, and to get two picks in a deep draft would give MJ team great building blocks to go along with Kemba and Gerald

ya pretty much anything after the cleveland deal everything seems like it would never happen but that would be a good deal for both cleveland and the bobcats

not sure why my kings would trade the 5th pick and evans just to move up 3 spots.

I honestly believe that the Charlotte Bobcats will make the worst available choice, based on past experience. I feel bad for the fellas that are stuck on this team, or have no other options in free agency. (I lived in Concord, NC for 4 years prior to 2011 and have followed the Bobcats, can't say I have the patience to wait on anything to really come from this franchise, sorry Michael.) The team doesn't have one legitimate NBA starter, there are some players with great potential (Walker, Biyombo, Augustin although he appears to have peaked). The Felton, Wallace, Jackson trio was strong, it's a shame the team was not making enough $ to keep them together and add some talent. What you have now looks like the Clippers and Warriors of the '90's.

Sac deal looks best to me for the both of them. They get a true 3 in MKG, Bobcats get a solid SG and possibly Barnes or Robinson to build.
IMO, GSW doesn't do it b/c Kemba didn't look good (12ppg in 28 minutes on 36% shooting) and Curry is 20 and 10 possibly now that Ellis is gone and a very good looking young squad, and he has a great FG % for a PG at about 48 and getting better. Amazing from three pt range too.
Memphis looks good, but for Memphis only. Bobcat lineup post trade looks bad compared to other Southeast Division teams (Orlando[Dwight leaving changes things] Miami and Atlanta). They need to shoot for like 2020 to be good b/c Miami isn't getting any worse.
Cleveland looks pretty good for both too.

@jim316, Obviously Bobcats fans care, or people from NC that follow basketball at all. If you don't, why'd you bother to look?

@sactown, that's what I was thinking too, but I had read that they were really high on MKG and apparently were shopping Evans. As a Bobcats fan, I obviously love the deal, but it really doesn't make THAT much sense. I think the Cleveland deal is the most likely of all of them.

MKG is gonna be a stud! Draft him because he has the work ethic and mind set to be a future all star

About time someone posted about Carolina sports in here, anyways there are a few other ideas out there. Trading the #2 to Portland for their 6 and 11 where we could get Lillard and Harkless which would be great. Another idea is NO attempting to get rid of Ariza's contract and take that on as well as gain the 10th pick, and multiple ideas about what we would give back. If we could get the 6 & 11, that would be ideal. Also, this is a deep draft and the Cats want to move up higher than 31 back into the first round and may be able to trade with a cap pressed team who doesn't want to spend money on a 1st round pick. Anyway if we stay at two we would take either Robinson or MKG which I'd be fine with either. Other top prospects in Cats fans eyes are Royce White, John Jenkins, and Moe Harkless.

No offense to Bobcats fans but I really hope they don't draft MKG. Id much rather see him go to Washington and play with John Wall or even Cleveland.

# 11 Jakeness23 @ Jun 11
Believe me Jon, we understand. I hope he goes somewhere else too, because I think he's ready to contribute right away to a team that at least has an identity. There would be too much pressure on him Charlotte to save the franchise.

I can actually see the Kings making that deal because they seem to want to get rid of Tyreke in favor of DMC. They don't blend well together as they both work from the same spots on the court. The Kings would need more than just the pick though, perhaps Biyambo could be thrown in as part of the deal since the Kings are short up front.
I'd like to see the Bobcats try and make a move for Derrick Williams out in Minnesota. He doesn't fit with that team but he also doesn't fit next to Biyambo and Tyrus, but he is stud in the making. I can see him being a all-star with the right minutes.

I dont like #5 at all.
I feel like Kemba is the answer.

I say trade #2 for a 2012 1st(10-15), 2013 1st, and 2013 2nd.
I feel like there are some overrated players in the draft and the sleep of the WHOLE draft is Tony Wroten Jr.
Mark my words.

# 14 Jakeness23 @ Jun 12
I'm thinking if they're trading #2 they're looking for a solid veteran and a pick between 10-20, but if they just want a pick and a young, raw player, they would want a pick higher than 10-15. I'm starting to think the Portland deal is the most likely. In which they would trade the #2 pick for the #6 and #11 picks.

# 15 Jcorona2 @ Jun 12
I don't see why Portland would do that deal though. They have Batum (MKG or Barnes), Aldrige (Thomas Robinson), and Wes Matthews and Jamal Crawford (Beal). Those are top 4 projected. I think they want both of their picks, unless they get a solid player for a pick, but not to move up in the draft.
