First Madden NFL 11 Details and Screenshots
Posted on April 3, 2010 at 03:32 PM.
This is another article I originally published over at that is now being copied over here as I kickoff my attempt to create a really cool arena. I hope you like it!

Today IGN posted the first details about Madden NFL 11 in this article. To date, this was the first substantial information released about the game other than that the team was striving to make this year’s edition “simpler, quicker, and deeper”.

The information was focused on the jostling that occurs on every down in the NFL between receivers and cornerbacks, and thus the two screenshots released along with the article feature Miles Austin of the Cowboys and Anquan Boldin who is now a Raven. The article detailed the additions to the AI made by the Madden team this year, something they’ve dubbed the “Catch Debugging Tool”. This tool allows receivers to be aware of where they are on the field relative to the out of bounds lines, the first down marker, and so on. They will then react appropriately and try to give themselves the best chance to get their toes down in bounds or make it past the marker. The tool also helps prevent curl routes leading to your receiver sprinting towards his own endzone, a problem that has plagued the series in the past.

On the defensive side of the ball, corners can now meet the receiver in midair and separate them from the ball via new animations that have been added to the game. Obviously ratings will play a critical role in how often they are successful at doing so, but it’s good to know that EA has given attention to pass defense as well in an attempt to keep the game balanced and realistic.

These few tidbits are something sim players and those with an eye for detail will really appreciate, as we have all been frustrated by a receiver darting out of bounds rather than cutting up-field for more yardage or a receiver not even attempting to tap his toes in the past. It’s also good to hear that there are new, more realistic animations for midair collisions, as the one we’ve all come to know where the db takes out the receivers legs and flips him stuck out like a sore thumb.
