Bullpen Blows It.
Posted on April 15, 2012 at 12:20 AM.

Sadly, this Jones home run came with no one on base.]

Baltimore, MD Carl Pavano (1-0 1.35) and Jake Arrieta were the early story and the failing of the Orioles Bullpen were the story late. Arrieta went 6 innings in his frist opening day start for Baltimore surrendering only one run, on a Joe Mauer (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R) solo homerun, to give Minnesota an early 1-0 lead. Baltimore would rally back when Adam Jones worked a walk, then advance to second when Matt Wieters hit over a ball and the only play was at first. Jones then scored when new Oriole Wilson Betemit drove him in on a single to center to tie the game at 1 going into the 5th.

Arrieta would leave with a very good line: 6 IP, 2H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6K. Baltimore would be undone by their bullpen as Troy Patton (0-1 13.50) would give up the lead in the 7th on a solo shot to Josh Willingham. When asked why he chose to stick with the lefty Patton rather than bring in Pedro Strop who was warm, Manager Buck Showalter said "We liked the match-up and Patton had him down 0-2 he just missed his spot and it hurt us." Strop would finish the 7th before getting into trouble himself in the 8th.

The 8th inning got off to a great start for Minnesota as RF Ben Revere singled and stole second, Alexi Casilla hit a chopper to Strop who tried to get the lead runner heading to third and got no one out, Jamie Carrol hit into the (5-2) fielders choice to nail Revere at home. With runners on 1st and 2nd with only one out, Strop gave up and RBI single to Denard Span. That would be all for Strop as he would only make it 0.2 innings and was charged for 2 runs. Matt Lindstom came in and gave up an RBI singe to Joe Mauer before inducing two popups to end the innings. Baltimore would answer back in the 8th when Adam Jones lead off the 8th inning with a solo hone run to left center off Matt Maloney. It would be as close as Baltimore would get. Matt Capps closed out the ninth and Minnesota gets the opening day victory 4-2, despite being out-hit 8-6.

Game two is tomorrow and will feature Jason Hammel going against Francisco Lirano.
