Chris' UFC Undisputed 2010 Review Stuck
Posted on May 25, 2010 at 06:09 PM.

What happens when you try to accurately simulate a sport with a complex array of moves and actions?

You get a convoluted mess of controls that'll frustrate even the most seasoned gamer like in UFC Undisputed 2010. While UFC diehards and stick seasoned gamers will likely enjoy the vast array of complex moves available, everyone else will end up in a game that is a little difficult to control. We'll come back to the negatives.

The game itself features an impressive array of fighters alongside a bunch of different game modes with which to partake. I've tested the waters on every one of them and I like career mode for longevity, but the title modes are quite fun distractions in and of themselves.

The presentation just bleeds everything that is UFC. If you watch a broadcast of the sport and then hop on to play Undisputed, you will find a lot of similarities. However, the commentary gets repetitive quick and when it comes to the post fight interviews in career modes, they become a bad running joke quickly as your fighter says the same phrases over and over. The interviews probably should have been thought through a bit more, because it just takes a bit of immersiveness away from career mode.

The rest of the presentational elements such as the graphics and audio aren't bad at all, but they also don't stand out as some of our genre's best either. The presentation overall leaves a great first impression, but after you keep on playing you notice just how shallow that aspect of the game is.

But back to the gameplay, it's a strange mixture of moments of fun riddled with multiple points of frustration. I cannot stress enough how much I hate the controls. While if you have the controls figured out, you can easily have a lot of fun. Just keep in mind that it might take a good while to completely master the controls. Overall, the controls are unnecessarily complicated and tend to bring the entire experience down quite a bit. The controls seriously need to be reworked completely with simplicity and accessibility in mind.

Overall, this game is for UFC diehards who have the patience to learn a very complex set of controls. It's not a game for casual UFC fans and I doubt the game creates many new fans of the sport because of how difficult the controls are to master. So if you love the UFC and if you have the patience and fortitude to learn a complex set of controls (or if you played the heck out of last year's game) then jump at the chance to pick UFC Undisputed 2010 up. This game is a decent attempt at a simulation of the UFC, but it's not quite accessible enough for the common man.

I just bought this earlier today and haven't had the chance to play it since I'm working. But the controls are definitely my biggest concern. Last year's game was complicated enough as it is. And I STLL never mastered that one either.

Yeah, I like the premise of the game and in a lot of ways, I like how they gave the complexity of the sport a try. But I think they need to seriously give an option to play with simpler controls of some kind to make things a bit easier to handle, especially for newcomers to the sport. If I didn't watch 5-6 events a year, there's no way I'd like this game because it caters to the hardcore crowd. Hardcore UFC fans will almost certainly love this game, but I just think the sport is missing an important branding opportunity here.

According to Gametrailers' review : "Undisputed 2010's fighting system is nearly twice as deep as last year's version but about half the complexity".

Sounds like the auto playcalling that will be in Madden has found its market.

Ha, *high five* to you kevin for that comment.

(Please forgive me for giving that guy cred Chris -- it was just a good zinger)

This game is a great fighting game...the problem is the moves are SUPER complicated to learn and will take even a seasoned gamer months to learn....learn, not master.

I dont really think the controls are that complex espicially if you played last years game, i mean there are some things that im not quite sure how to do yet but i ejoy the game much more than last year. the career mode is about 3X more deep than last years version.

I'm practically a button masher type of player and I didn't find the controls all that hard. I concentrated on strikes and defense for the most part but could execute ground attacks and even rubber guarded with BJ Penn one game.
