A Battle of the Birds

November 12th, 2010:

ATLANTA, Georgia -- The Falcons defended their home field yesterday against the tough Baltimore Ravens, sitting pretty atop the AFC North with a 7-2 record. The Falcons went into yesterday undefeated in the Georgia Dome this season, but they were facing by far their toughest opponent at home.

And after three quarters of domination, the Ravens looked like they would walk out of the dome with an easy win, as they led the Falcons 24-7 after three quarters. Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and the rest of the usually explosive Atlanta offensive attack had been outwitted and roughed up by a Baltimore defense that was missing the face of the franchise Ray Lewis.

There is a reason the Falcons won the first four home games of their season, their passing attack was too much for most teams to handle, and they flexed their muscles in a desperate fourth-quarter comeback attempt that began with about seven minutes left in the game.

Still down by 17 points, Ryan and the Falcons receivers finally started hooking up on long routes and they drove down the field in less than two minutes. Ryan threw a lob to veteran wide receiver Brian Finneran, who caught it for a 21 yard pass, and the Falcons were down by just 10.

After a three and out by the Ravens offense, Atlanta drove back down the field like it was destiny for the game to come down to the final seconds. This time, Ryan found Tony Gonzalez wide open in the endzone for a short touchdown pass, giving the ball back to the Ravens with 3:12 left to play.

The Falcons would get the ball back with about a minute left, but could not find the magic on their final drive. The Baltimore defense stood strong and then knelt the ball just once to ice the game, their seventh win of the season.

The loss drops Atlanta to 5-4, but they retain second place in the NFC South behind the New Orleans Saints. The Falcons are on the road next week, as they travel west to St. Louis to battle the 6-2 Rams. Atlanta is 1-3 on the road this season, but coach Mike Smith hopes they can turn that around to get back on the winning track.

Full Boxscore: Ravens 24, Falcons 21
