Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens

Rice shows the way as Ravens ease past Bengals

Ray Rice stole the show in the first half as Baltimore warmed up with an easy win agains Cincinnati at a cild and wet M T Bank. Rice finished the first half with 147yds and 2TD, including a 74yd run, before Coach Harbaugh rested his starters for the second half.

Baltimore totally dominated the first half, moving the ball at will as the Bengals defence tried in vain to contain Rice. Flacco played behind a dominant line, picking gaps in the secondary at ease. The Ravens extended their lead to 20 when Shayne Graham kicked his 31st FG of the year towards the end of the third quarter to add to his earlier score in the second.

With the Ravens starting defence wrapped up on the sidelines, The Bengals did manage to record two scores. Terrell Owens is no easy match up for starting corners, and he found himself all alone in the end zone after giving Walt Harris the slip to score from 23yds. The Bengals gave the scorecard some respectability just before the final whistle when Carson Palmer connected with Antonio Bryant on a 4yd fade, but Rice had already put the result beyond doubt.

The decision to rest his starters paid off for Harbaugh as The Ravens have a healthy roster as they prepare to visit Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wildcard game. In the other games the Jets take on the Patriots, The Saints entertain The Eagles whilst the Rams vsit Arizona to face down the Cardinals. Watching with interest will be the Steelers, Chargers, Vikings and Cowboys as they rest themselves up before entering the fray the following week.

Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns

Ravens comeback seals playoff place

Joe Flacco's 15th TD of the year was enough to see the Ravens past The Browns as the Ravens claimed a place in this years play offs. Flacco found TE Todd Heap on 4th and goal from 3 yds out with 44 seconds left to crown a remarkable comeback.

The Browns had led for the entire game, after they went ahead on the back of 10 minute/17 play drive from the opening kick off when HB James Davis found the end zone from a yard out in the first. They extended their lead in the dying minutes of the second thanks to a Dawson FG as The Browns dominated the first half with 20 minutes of the possession.

The Ravens defence stepped up a gear in the 2nd half, led by team captain Ray Lewis, who recorded 12 tackles in the game. He was ably assisted by defensive linemen Kelly Gregg and Cory Redding who both recorded 2 sacks each. As the Ravens finally found some time with the ball in hand, Flacco led the team up the field on succesive drives, only to be halted as Shayne Graham slotted field goals from 38 and 25yds to bring the Ravens to within a score at 10 - 6.

Clevelands defence tried it's hardest to deny the Ravens as time wound down, thinking they game was won after Coleman sacked Flacco to bring up 4th and 16. Flacco found Ray Rice on the following play to claim first and goal but followed up with three incompletions before he again converted when he found Heap for the winning score.

The win confirms Baltimores place in the playoffs, one win behind the 12/3 Steelers. With Pittsburgh facing a trip to the 3/12 Browns it seems unlikely that The Ravens match up with The Bengals next week will have much bearing on the final standings.

New Orleans Siants at Baltimore Ravens

Ravens go down in Overtime

The Baltimore Ravens lost out in overtime as Pierre Thomas scorched an AWOL defence on an 80yd touchdown run, as the New Orleans Saints claimed a 23 - 16 win in the snow.

Harbaugh called it 'A bad read' as the Ravens came with the blitz as The Saints looked to convert 3rd and 7 after both sides had punted away in the extra period.

The Saints offensive unit seemed to cope with the conditions better than the home town Ravens as they took the lead as Drew Brees found Marques Colston unmarked for a 5yd TD in the 1st quarter. The Ravens were much more methodical in their approach as they looked to gain the upperhand on the ground, taking 12 minutes and 17 plays to go 85yds up the field. Ray Rice recorded TD number 12 for the season as he dove in from 6yds out to end the scoring in the first half.

After the break, Lynell Hamilton broke through the Ravens line to score his first TD of the year as The Saints retook the lead. Both sides struggled to move the ball, exchanging FG's to leave the score at 17 - 10 with ten minutes to play.

Baltimore twiced spurned the chance to take the FG on 4th down, finally converting when Todd Heap caught a goal line slant from 1yd to tie the scores and send the game to overtime.

Baltimore still have their playoff destiny in their own hands as they slip to 3rd place in the AFC. They head to the 3/11 Browns next week, before facing off against the 9/5 Bengals in the final game off the season, in a match that will probably decide both teams playoff future. Pittsburgh head the AFC (and NFL) on 12/2.

Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans

Ravens stand firm in Houston.

Ray Lewis celebrated his return to the starting line up by pulling off a last ditch tackle as the Texans looked to convert 4th and goal as time ran down at Reliant Stadium.

Down by four, the Texans recieved the ball with 9 minutes remaining and marched up the field on the back of some strong running by HB Ben Tate. When the Texans claimed 1st and goal after a dubious pass interferance call, it looked like the writing was on the wall as the Ravens D had struggled to contain the Texans offence all night. Lewis had other ideas and he rallied his teammates in a remarkable 4 down defensive stand.

The game was a tense affair from start to finish. Veteran reciever Derrick Mason opened the scoring in the first quarter, connecting with Flacco's flighted pass from 36yds out, his first score of the season. The Texans hit back as the 1st quarter drew to a close when Steve Slaton powered through the Ravens defence to score from 29yds out. In the 2nd, Dante Stallworth recorded his 6th touchdown of the year as he went in from 20yds. Houston were forced into 2 FG, the second a monster conversion from 55yds. to come within a point at the half.

Shayne Graham scored the only points in a tight 3rd quarter as he slotted over from 36yds to record his 23 FG of the year. The Texans took the lead in the game for the first time when Slatton went in again, converting 3rd and goal from 2yds out. The Ravens, facing a 2nd succesive defeat, dug deep and drove up the field on the back of some determined running by R Rice, who scampered in from 1yd out to score. With 9 minutes left in the game the Texans looked to have plenty of time, and seemed unstoppable as the drove upfield, only to be halted at the very end by the indomitable Lewis

Lewis and his team mates will need to be on the top of their game again next week as the host the 9/4 Saints as they look to keep the pressure on Pittsburgh (11/2) in the race for the AFC North.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore slip up in the snow

The Ravens couldn't overcome the elements or the Pittsburgh Steelers as winter snow covered the M T Bank Stadium. The Steelers avenged their defeat from earlier in the season in a hard fought 7 - 6 victory.

In the atrocious conditions, offensive yards were always going to be at a premium, as Ravens QB Joe Flacco found on the first snap of the game. As he transitioned from his 5 step drop to pass to Boldin his back foot slipped away from him. Before he could regain his balance Cory Hampton smashed him to the floor to record a sack on the first play of the game.

It was a pattern that would be repeated throughout the game. The Ravens had the better of the first half, sacking Roethlisberger 3 times, and registered the games first points just before the half when the ever reliable S Graham kicked over from 39yds.

After the half both sides forced 3 and outs, with Baltimore finding touch on the punt at the 5yd line. Roethlisberger led the Steelers on a 95yd drive that belied the conditions, taking 15 plays and using 12 minutes. On the final play of the drive running back Rashard Mendenhall slipped through to score from 11yds, the only TD of the game.

Baltimore may rue their conservative approach as they kicked a 31yd FG with 6 minutes left to play instead of going for the TD. They did get the ball cak at the two minute warning but Flacco couldn't sustain the drive and they turned the ball over on downs.

The Ravens loss puts them at 9/3 and back in to the chasing pack as competition hots up for the AFC playoff places. Pittsburgh lead the AFC, and the NFL, on 10/2. The ravens head to The Texans next week and will welcome back Ray Lewis to the line up.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Baltimore Ravens

Ruthless Ravens sink Buccaneers

Baltimore recorded their biggest win of the season against a sorry looking Tampa outfit at cold and windswept M T Bank Stadium. The Bucs had no answer to the Baltimore offence as Ray Rice pounded the line on his way to another 100yd game.

Baltimore dominated all aspects of the stat sheet. Coach Harbaugh pointed to the time of possesion as the key area as Flacco controlled the offence in a series of long drives. After recieving the opening kick off, the Ravens took 15 plays and 10 minutes to move the ball into the red zone, only to be halted by some sturdy goal line defence. S Graham opened the scoring with a 23yd FG.

After both sides went 3 and out, Tampa finally looked to gain some momentum, claiming consecutive first downs on the back of some powerful running by Williams. Their progress was halted when Cory Redding, deputising at LE for the injured Price, brought down Tampa QB Josh Freeman for the first of his three sacks. Taveres Gooden and Walt Harris also found their way through the Tampa offensive line to put Freeman on his back.

HB Donald Brown took his season TD tally to five on the following drive as he dove over from 10yds and then went on to claim number 6 early in the fourth. Ray Rice wasn't going to let his young back up claim all the glory after his own hard work and he finally got on the score sheet as time wound down after Tampa failed to convert fourth down.

Sterner tests await the Ravens in the coming weeks as they face up to their main rivals The Pittsburgh Steelers next week. The Steelers are tied with The Ravens on 9/2 as both teams try to wrest control of the the AFC North. After the Ravens narrow victory in Pittsburgh, The Steelers are sure to be fired up for this one as they look to extend their winning streak to 4.

Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers

Ravens stars shine in Carolina twighlight

Under pressure running back Ray Rice hit back at his critics in devestating style at the Bank of America Stadium. Rice ran in scores from 35 and 53yds in the 4th quarter as he twisted, turned, banged and bashed his way to 215 yds against a tiring Carolina defence.

Another Raven who felt he had something to prove after an average start to the season was Anquan Boldin. He weighed in with 2 touchdown catches in the first half, from 7 and 11yds, answering back to level the score each time after M Moore first found Brandon LaFell from 5yds and the evergreen Steve Smith from 3yds.

The teams went into the locker room at half time level at 14, both coaches undoubtedly pleased that their offence was able to sustain long drives. Flacco's control in the 80yd, 9 min drive to set up Boldins second put the marker down that this Ravens offence mean business.

The second half continued in the same vein as the Ravens offence dominated the line of scrimmage, allowing Rice to finally break his shackles and at last rediscover some of his early season form. He was ably assisted by back up Donald Brown who sliced through a bewildered Panthers defence in the third to score from 7yds out as the Ravens took the lead for the first time.

With the scoreboard in their favour, the Ravens defence found a second wind, no doubt in part due to an emotive half time speach from injured captain Ray Lewis. As the game entered the fourth quarter The Ravens continued to carry the ball hard past the gain line as Rice piled up the yards.

The Ravens maintained their position at the head of the NFL on 8/2, along with the Patriots, Eagles, Cowboys and Steelers. The New York Jets lost ground as they suffered a 20 14 loss at home to the Texans. The Ravens, bouyed by the manner of their victory, and the fact they stayed injury free, will look to keep the pressure on the rest of the NFL as they entertain the 1/9 Buccaneers next week.

Baltimore Ravens at Atlanta Hawks

Ravens clip Falcons wings in overtime.

The Ravens came back from The Georgia Dome with the win with a thrilling overtime win over the Falcons. Victory came at a price though as team talisman Ray Lewis suffered an abdominal tear which is likely to keep him out for the next month.

For much of regulation it was like watching a different Ravens outfit as they struggled to move the ball on the ground, but moving at will through the air. Atlanta, led by back up QB Chris Redman deputising for the injured Matt Ryan, also fared well on the offensive side of the ball, with Michael Turner putting in a classic running back performance and racking up 148yds.

It was behind the running of Turner that Atlanta got the first score. Two ten yard runs set up first and goal before Redman found WR Michael Jenkins in the endzone. The Ravens tied the scores 4 minutes later as Flacco flighted the ball over the secondary to a streaking Dante' Stallworth on a 50yd score, the recievers 5th of the season.

Ladarius Webb enhanced his growing reputation, snagging the first of 2 interceptions, taking it 36yds to score his first TD of the year and silencing large parts of the partisan crowd. The home fans found their voice just before the half as Redman found veteran TE Gonzalez on a 12yd corner route to tie the scores at the half.

Thoughts of a high scoring shootout were dashed as a scoreless third quarter was dominated by the defence. Both sides came away with interceptions, Webb claiming his second of the day, while Flacco gifted Decoud the ball on the 2yd line trying to hit Boldin in the endzone.

Ray Rice again struggled to gain any momentum with the ball in hand and it was back up Donald Brown who took the ball up, capping off the drive with a 4yd sweep to the corner. The Falcons never gave up in spite of some intense D and Redman found Roddy White on the last play of regulation on a spectacular 72yd throw.

The Ravens won the toss and began a drive that belied there earlier rushing woes, moving the ball up the field through some gritty inside running from Rice and Brown. Mindful of the new OT rules the elected to keep banging the ball in, much to the dismay of the Offensive Co-ordinator who kept trying to send the kicking unit on. The decision paid off as Brown smashed through the the line to score from 8 yds and seal the win.

The win moves The Ravens to 7/2, where they sit atop the NFL with The Patriots, The Jets and divisional rivals The Steelers. They travel to the 4/5 Panthers next week.

Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens

Webb saves Ravens Blushes

A Ladarius Webb interception in the final second of the 4th quarter ended Miami's hopes of recording a first win of the season at a chilly M T Bank on Sunday.

Miami, trailing by 7, drove from their own 45, converting 4th and 6 along the way, to set up 1st and goal with 18 seconds of play left. Chad Henne tried in vain to find a reciever in the end zone bringing up 4th and goal with 2 seconds of regulation left. Brandon Marshall slipped to the corner on a quick out but Webb was there waiting and caught his second interception of the season as the final whistle blew.

It was an exciting, aerial finish to a game played mainly on the ground. The ever relaible Graham got the games first score, slotting over a 45yd FG to open the scoring at the end of the first. Miami's potent running attack pounded the Ravens defence all day and Ricky Williams smashed through to score from 9yds mid way through the 2nd as the Dolphns took a 7 3 lead.

Baltimore retook the lead when back up running back, Donald Brown, dove over from 4 yds just before the half. Brown outshone his team mate Rice, averaging 6yds a carry on 6 attempts compared to Rice's 2.5yd average.

After the break the Dolphins levelled the scores with a 27yd FG from Carpenter. Then Flacco led his team on a 9min, 80yd drive, finally connecting with Donte' Stallworth on a 23 yd slant for the recievers 4th TD of the campaign.

With Rice out of sorts, The Ravens couldn't hold the ball and run out the clock, leading to the tense final minute as Miami tried to force the game into overtime.

The win puts The Ravens to 6/2, tied with The Bengals and Steelers atop of the AFC North after The Bengals beat The Steelers 31 16. The Browns woes continue as the slumped to 2/6 after losing 26 20 at home to New England.

Baltimore visit the 4/4 Atlanta Hawks next week. They will be without the services of OLB Jarret Johnson who picked up a PCL tear that will keep him out for the next month. Rookie Sergio Kindle is expected to deputise at LOLB.

Coach Harbaugh praised his teams patience and willingness to stick to the gameplan as the Ravens overcame The Bills 30 13 at the M T Bank Stadium.

Nothing epitomised the side's composure more than the performance of running back Ray Rice. Starting the 4th quarter, Rice only had 48yds to his name. Back to back 10yd runs set the Ravens up for the TD, Rice diving home from 4yds. On the Bills following drive Ladarius Webb stepped up to intercept Trent Edwards pass. The Ravens took advantage of the short field as Rice plowed over from 6yds to complete the scoring. Rice finished the game with 106yds and 2 tds, 58yds and the 2 scores coming in the final quarter.

The Ravens certainly needed to dig deep after an even first half. After a scoreless first quarter, Graham kicked the first points from 32 yards. The Bank then fell silent as Edwards connected with Jackson on a 14yd touchdown pass. Ravens fans enjoyed their half time snacks after Flacco found Anquan Boldin in tight coverage for the recievers first touchdown of the year. Two field goals for each team set up a tense last 10 minutes, but Rice made sure there were no upsets in this one.

Of some concern is the fact the Ravens gave up 129yds on the ground, especially considering that the run heavy Dolphins are next on the schedule. Harbaugh dismissed the concerns. "We came with a plan for today. We executed the plan and came away with the win. With a bye week next week I have every confidence that the team will be ready to execute the plan we devise for Miami." Harbaugh also confirmed that LE Trevor Pryce will miss the next 2 months with a torn hamstring, although it is hoped he may be fit in time for the playoffs.

Turnovers the key as New England beat The Ravens

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh was left ruing his sides ability to keep the ball as two key turnovers proved to be the difference af Foxboro.

With Baltimore leading 14 13 at the half, Linebacker Banta-Cain picked off a Flacco pass in the 3rd quarter taking it to the house on a 55yd return. Worse was to follow after the Ravens got themselves back into the game when Flacco connected with veteran Tight End Todd Heap on a 21yd pass to bring the score back to Bal 22 NE 25. Neither team could sustain a drive in the 4th. Baltimore managed to force a 3 and out with just under 2 minutes remaining. However, rather than driving for the win, Webb fumbled the return after the hit from McCourty. Maroney sealed the win 3 plays later on a 1yd run.

Baltimore did manage a final score when Flacco hit Mason on a 23yd pass. Earlier in the game R Rice converted 2 goalline runs while Brady hit Price from 5yds in the final minute of the first half.

Coach Harbaugh backed his errant QB. "Joe's a winner, we know he'll bounce back from this. Even though the game was gone he led us up the field on the final drive and got in for the score. That show how much character this kid has got."

Baltimore face the 1/4 Bills at home next week.
