Reds score two runs in eighth to rally past Angels

CINCINNATI-- It took five innings before the Reds could put a tally on the board in Monday's Opening Day game before rallying to a 4-3 victory over the Angels.

Reds ace Johnny Cueto (0-0, 3.00) got the nod in the Opening Day affair in his first game against the Halos since coming to the big leagues.

A bloop single by Angels second basemen Howie Kendrick allowed Albert Pujols to score to give them a 1-0 in the fourth.

A 3-2 changeup to young stud Mike Trout seemingly was Cueto's only bad pitch the enitre six innings of work, as Trout connected for his first home run of the year and gave the Angels a 3-0 going into the sixth.

Jared Weaver (0-0, 2.57) had it on cruise control allowing only one hit going into the 5th inning with the Angels out to a 3-0;a single by Red's shortstop Zack Cozart in the 3rd.

In the bottom of the 5th Cozart will get the Reds second hit of the game and the first run on a two out solo home run to left field. Cutting the Halos lead to 3-1.

Ryan Ludwick repeated what Cozart did in the 5th later in the 7th with a solo home run to bring Los Angeles' lead within one.

The Reds bullpen was lights out following Cueto's sub-par outing. Combining for 3 innings of work, allowing no runs on only two hits.

"Our bullpen really kept us in this game," Reds Manager Dusty Baker said following the game. "They were able to set down their big sluggers and it allowed us to at least try to come back."

Brandon Phillips two-run double to left field off Angels left-handed reliever Scott Downs game the Reds a 4-3, and a lead that they would be able to keep intact.

Aroldis Chapman picked up his first save of the young season by pitching a 1-2-3 9th inning.
