My Madden 2010 Thoughts
Posted on August 16, 2009 at 10:10 PM.
Wow...what a fun week it's been with Madden NFL 10 on the 360 thus far. Got the game on the 12th, 2 days early from a local store in my town of about 10,000. After playing the past 5 days, I can say with 100% certainty that NFL 2k5 and APF 2k8 will be retired and played for nostalgia or a change of pace; I'm fully committed to Madden 10 now...and that's weird for me to say.

In a previous blog I mentioned how I hadn't owned a non-Wii (hehe) Madden game since Madden '99. I had Madden 07 and 09 on the Wii, but those really weren't something that I would dive into hardcore...they were there more as a control novelty and "fun", but not something I really devoted myself to. However, that's about to change as I can say I'm ready to get into Madden this year about as hard as I get into College Hoops 2k8.

The turning point from intrigue to full-out awe was my final preseason game as the Packers against the Titans in a rainstorm at LP Field. Chris Johnson was just destroying my D as the CPU just ran him off the edges and got to my 2nd and 3rd levels easily. He racked up something like 125 yards on about 9 carries and 2 TDs as the Titans jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead due to an Aaron Rodgers fumble and return for a TD and a couple thrown picks. I crawled slowly back into the game, trailing 28-14 at the half as I couldn't get a timeout as the first half expired.

In the 3rd quarter, I cut it to 28-21 and then gave up a long drive to the Titans that made it 35-21. I fumble the ensuing kickoff, and they run it in for a TD to go up 42-21. That's it, thought it was over...not according to Matt Flynn, my backup QB getting some playing time.

My D steps up, gets serious pressure on Kerry Collins, stuffs Lendale White left and right (don't try to run between the tackles on B.J. Raji or Ryan Pickett), and I score the tying TD with 0:48 to play. The Titans get a bit aggressive and try to get in position for at least a FG. They throw a quick out to their WR who gets into a battle with my nickel back. HE FORCES A FUMBLE AND I RECOVER. Two quick plays, two quick TOs from Tennessee trying to ice Mason Crosby, but he nails the game-winning FG from about 38 yards out to win 45-42!!

I honestly can say for the past 11 years, Madden has not been able to hold my interest for about more than 2-3 drives a game without boring me to tears. 5 or 6 games in and I haven't even had that feeling one bit. I need the CPU to give me a good game as I don't game online that much (can't commit to 1-1.5 hours uninterrupted gameplay with a 13-month old kid), but man is this game addicting.

Well done Ian and Co.!! Thank you for taking this franchise in a new and exciting direction. I have no urge, none whatsoever, to even attempt NCAA again and my 2k5 may finally collect some dust.
