ORLANDO LOSES MAGIC TOUCH IN ATLANTA, HAWKS WIN GAME 3

Atlanta, GA (AP) - You knew it was bound to happen. Orlando laid an egg, so to speak, and lost on the road to the Hawks 86-75. Atlanta picked up a much needed win to avoid getting into a three-oh hole that nobody has ever come back from. Atlanta was sparked by the return of Joe Johnson, who scored 25 points after sitting on the sidelines for the first two games due to a bad shoulder. The Magic just didn't have the touch on offense tonight, hitting on only 38% of their shots. Interestingly, Orlando shot better from behind the three-point line, hitting 8 of 17 shots for 47%.

Happel and the Orlando offense were frustrated all night, though Happel still found Howard for the dunk

Orlando Forward Brian Happel played well, but he didn't get much support from the rest of the team. Happel finished with 37 points, including 3 three-pointers. But, the only other Magic player to score in double figures was Dwight Howard, who shot 6-17 for 12 points. John Salmons is mired in a deep shooting slump, going just 8-36 so far in the series, and 17-71 for the playoffs.

Another victim to add to the Happel Posterization Club

Four Atlanta players scored in double figures. Both Al Horford and Josh Smith contributed double-doubles for the Hawks, who now trail in the best-of-seven series two games to one. "We knew once we got home, we'd get a nice little boost, and that's what happened tonight. Now, we've got a chance to get right back in this thing." Atlanta will look to tie the series up on Sunday night.

ORLANDO HALFWAY HOME TO EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

Orlando, FL (AP) - In typical Orlando fashion, the Magic turn on the jets in the second half and head to Atlanta up two games to none in the series after a 90-69 victory. The Hawks hung around and kept it a close game for much of the first half. But, Orlando Forward Brian Happel ripped off 12 straight points for the Magic, helping give his team a five point lead at halftime. Orlando outscored the Hawks 43-27 in the second half, including a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach.

Happel showing off his game above the rim, an easy 2 of his 44 points

Happel led the way for Orlando, dropping 44 points on Atlanta. He nearly had a triple-double as well, pulling down 14 rebounds and getting 7 assists. It was a record breaking performance for Happel, who set the team record for most field goals made in a playoff game with 19, surpassing Shaquille O'Neal's record of 18 that was set in 1996, also against Atlanta. Gilbert Arenas was the only other Orlando player to hit double figures in scoring with 14 points.

Strong defense leads to easy baskets - including this steal turning into a fastbreak

Atlanta had to go without star forward Joe Johnson for a second straight game. Johnson's offense has definitely been missed. The high scorer for the Hawks was Josh Smith, who had just 16 points. Shooting was the big story in this game. Atlanta was held to just 32% from the field, and foul shooting proved to be an issue as well, hitting just 52% from the charity stripe. Orlando didn't shoot the ball particularly well. In fact, they were outright dreadful from behind the arc, going just 2-21. But, the Magic did outrebound the Hawks 60-44.

Happel was taking it hard to the Hawks all night, including this dunk and the foul

Orlando's home court advantage has been evident throughout the playoffs so far. The team is 4-0 at Amway Center, and Happel knows what a boost the fans can provide, "I know I can speak for the rest of the team when I say I wouldn't trade this fan base for any other one in the world. I've been in this league long enough to see the way they can swing games." The Magic will try to win the next two games without the benefit of their home crowd, as they travel to Atlanta for games three and four.

ORLANDO GROUNDS HAWKS, TAKE GAME ONE

Orlando, FL (AP) - The Magic use a fourth quarter surge to turn a close game into a blowout, picking up an easy game one victory over Atlanta 106-89 in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. The stats don't exactly indicate how dominating performance this was. Orlando shot 45% from the field, Atlanta 43%. The Hawks only hit 2-10 from behind the arc, but the Magic weren't much better, going 8-31 (25%). Atlanta did turn over the ball 9 times, to just 4 from Orlando. It was the second quarter where the game really turned. The Magic held the Hawks to just 28% shooting that quarter, jumping out to an eight point advantage by halftime. Orlando Forward Brian Happel says the team is feeling really confident right now, "It was a great game, for sure. Everybody's always in a good mood in the locker room when you come out and make a statement like that. I'm really proud of the team right now."

Happel works his magic on the way to a rim-rocking dunk

Happel was on his game tonight. He scored 36 points and dished out 4 assists. He also collected 16 rebounds for yet another double-double. The one area he did struggle was his three-point shooting, where he went just 1-5. Dwight Howard continues to pile up the double-doubles, scoring 16 and grabbing 10 boards. He also handed out five dimes. Point Guard Gilbert Arenas also played well for Orlando, scoring 18 points and dishing out 7 assists. After the game, Happel talked about his team's desire to come out playing hard, "We came to play tonight and never let down. It's really nice to see our hard work rewarded with a win like this."

Happel ripping down one of his 16 rebounds

Atlanta was clearly at a disadvantage without its star forward, Joe Johnson, who sat out with a shoulder sprain. He is listed day-to-day, but the Hawks are hoping he can return for either game two or game three. The Hawks starters played well - four players were in double-figures scoring. However, the bench did not provide a lot of offense, only scoring 12 points combined. The bench will need to step up, especially with Johnson sidelined, if Atlanta is going to have any chance of upsetting Orlando. Game two is set for Wednesday night at the Amway Center in Orlando.

Happel: "Three ball, corner pocket."

HOW SWEEP IT IS! ORLANDO MOVING ON TO EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIS

"Who's got next?" Happel, teammates celebrate after eliminating Cleveland

Cleveland, OH (AP) - The Magic leave no doubt in anyone's mind that they were the better time, blowing out Cleveland 99-66 and sweeping the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series. Orlando got off to a hot start and made sure this game was never very close. The Magic went on a 22-6 run over the final 9 minutes of the first half to take a 22 point lead into the break. From there, Orlando basically coasted, and in fact managed to stretch out the lead. The Cavaliers just couldn't get anything going, offensively. The Cavs shot just 31% from the floor. Orlando also nearly doubled up Cleveland on the boards, 61-33, and the Magic bench came through in a big way, outscoring the Cavaliers 35-6. It was complete domination from both sides of the court.

As usual, Happel was a force down low, here grabbing the rebound and dunking it

Orlando Forward Brian Happel had a monster game in the series clincher, scoring 30 points and grabbing 21 rebounds. He also picked up 2 blocks and 3 assists. While Happel was certainly happy to be moving on to the next round, he and his teammates are still keeping things in perspective, "We've gotta enjoy this as much as we can, then get ready for the next round. Winning this one was great, but the ultimate prize is still in our sights."

It was another block party in Cleveland, Happel swatting Mo Williams away

A championship seems to be a very real possibility at this point for this Orlando squad, especially after such a dominating performance. Dwight Howard was able to score 16 points and grab 14 boards. Jameer Nelson was also big off the bench, adding 10 points, and Mack Bledsoe had the game of his life to date, scoring 12 points in just 15 minutes. Orlando shot the ball much better in this one than they had for much of the series, hitting on 49% of their field goals. Magic Head Coach Stan Van Gundy talked about the importance of shooting the right shots, "We were much smarter about the shots we were taking tonight, and you saw that reflected in our shooting percentage. Layups, dunks and wide open jumpers are going to give you a much better chance to succeed. It's not as much about quantity as it is quality."

Happel was clutch all game, here hitting a shot to beat the shot clock in the first half

Cleveland had a much better season than most expected. They are now 2 years removed from The Decision, and the Cavs are already back and competing in the playoffs. But, tonight's game, and this series, show that Cleveland still has plenty of work to do before ending its championship drought. As for Orlando, they're the first team to move on to the next round. The Magic will get a chance to rest up while they wait for the winner of the Atlanta/Boston series, which the Hawks lead three games to one.

MAGIC IN CONTROL, READY TO BREAK OUT BROOMS

Cleveland, OH (AP) - It was a game Cleveland had to have, and for a while, it looked like the Cavs might be able to take it. But instead, Orlando was clutch in the fourth quarter, once again. The Magic came back from a fourth quarter deficit for the second time in as many games, beating Cleveland 82-77. Orlando now owns a commanding three games to none lead in the best-of-seven series. No team in NBA history has ever come back from that. Both teams shot poorly from the field once again, with the Magic barely hitting 40% and the Cavs at 38% for the game. The big difference was the number of free throws. Orlando was 12-16 from the charity stripe, but the Cavaliers only took 2 foul shots the entire game.

Happel taking it hard to the basket for another crowd-pleasing strong throwdown

Orlando Small Forward Brian Happel led the way, notchin another double-double in the playoffs with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Dwight Howard also had a very good stat line: 16 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists. John Salmons may be coming out of his slump a bit, going 3-5 from the field. For the Cavaliers, Tom Harper continues to impress. He scored 16 points in the losing effort. Kendrick Perkings was another bright spot for the Cavs. The center scored 14 points and grabbed 20 rebounds.

Kendrick Perkins can only watch, helplessly, as Happel gets the easy break-away dunk

Orlando has a chance to wrap up the series Sunday night in Cleveland. The Cavs are sure to put up a fight, but the question is, is there enough fight to compete with the Magic at this point. Happel knows now is the time to finish off Cleveland, and get a few days of extra, much needed rest. "I think Coach has a pretty good handle on this team, and if he sees that we're worn down during a long road trip or after a back-to-back, he'll give us a day off. Rest is especially important now, after playing an entire regular season and now the intensity picks up even more in the playoffs. Staying fresh is key."

ORLANDO HOLDS SERVE, DEFENDS HOME COURT

Orlando, FL (AP) - Orlando's play in its first round series with the Cavaliers hasn't been pretty. But, they don't need to be. The Magic did just enough to escape with a 91-88 victory at home, taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Cleveland held the lead for much of the game. But Orlando got hot at just the right time in the fourth quarter to surge ahead, then barely held off the Cavs. The series now switches to Cleveland for the next two games.

Happel slamming it down for 2 of his 40 points

Orlando Forward Brian Happel continues to dominate unlike anything that's been seen for quite some time. Happel scored a playoff career high 40 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in the victory. "It's been a nice stretch for me, that's for sure. My teammates have been great, getting me the ball when I get hot, and even still looking for me when my shot's not fallin."

The Magic have plenty to be pumped about, taking a 2-0 lead to Cleveland

Happel did struggle a bit, only shooting 1-6 from behind the arc, making him just 1-10 so far in the series. Dwight Howard was a monster on the glass as well, grabbing 18 boards. And, Brandon Bass managed to hit the double digit mark as well. Vince Carter's 25 points led a scoring attack that had five Cleveland players scoring in double-digits. And, the Cavaliers hit on 50% of their three-point shots (6-12). Still, it wasn't quite enough. The big difference was on the glass, where Orlando held a 58-46 edge. Cleveland now faces what is essentially a must-win in game 3. A loss puts the Cavs in a 3-0 hole, and no team in NBA history has ever come back from that deficit in a best-of-7 game playoff series.

ORLANDO TAKES GAME ONE

Orlando, FL (AP) - It's not quite how the Magic envisioned things going, but Orlando still managed to pull away for a comfortable game one win in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Cleveland, with a final score of 88-76. Neither team shot the ball well. The Cavaliers only hit on 37% from the field, including a dismal 3-17 behind the arc. Orlando was not any better, connecting on just 38% of its shots (5-23 from long distance). But, the Magic outscored Cleveland 33-17 in the second quarter, and it never really got any closer from there.

Happel was a dunking machine against the Cavs on his way to 38 points

Orlando Forward Brian Happel struggled a bit from the field, at least by his standards, but still managed to pour in 38 points and grab 16 rebounds for likely his best performance of his playoff career. Dwight Howard was solid for the Magic, scoring 10 points and collecting 14 rebounds. He was also a force on defense, swatting away 5 shots. Rookie Tom Harper exploded for the Cavs, scoring 14 points and cleaning the glass 11 times. Vince Carter just could not get anything going against his former team. Vinsanity was just 8-30 from the field, scoring 17 points. Carter knows his teammates are going to lean on him in this series, and he has to perform if the Cavs have any chance, "I simply have to shoot better. There's not much more to say. My teammates looked to me, and I couldn't hit the shots when we needed them."

Happel and his Orlando teammates had the Cavs on edge all game long

The guard play continues to be a worry for Orlando Head Coach Stan Van Gundy, as Gilbert Arenas and John Salmons combined for just 6-27 from the field, 2-12 from three-point range. But Van Gundy knows he's got the big ace in Happel, "We're going to need him to keep elevating his play. It doesn't matter how much we're struggling. With Brian on the floor, a big run is always just a few shots away." Orlando will look to continue defending its home court Wednesday night in game two.

HAPPEL WINS FIRST MVP

Orlando, FL (AP) - A year that's been one to remember for Brian Happel continued this week, after picking up some hefty hardware. Happel was voted as the league's Most Valuable Player - an honor he managed to accomplish in just his second year in the NBA. After finding out he had won the award, he was nearly speechless. But after gathering himself, he had this to say: "It's honestly a dream come true. I know that's cliche, but it really is something I've dreamed about, but never thought would happen. It's been a great year. But, this is all possible only because I've got great teammates. Without them, there's no way this could have happened."

Happel was a slam dunk choice for MVP

Happel remains focused on the real goal, however, adding "While this is certainly an honor, I'm hoping there are even bigger things to come, not just for me, but for my team. This trophy is nice - but it's a ring I and my teammates are after." Happel was picked ahead of Miami Heat Forward LeBron James, who had been MVP the last three years running. Happel averaged 32.5 points per game and 15.1 rebounds per game. He led the league in most of the big offensive categories, including scoring, rebounding and shooting percentage. Happel was also named 1st team All-NBA and 2nd team All-Defensive.

ORLANDO CLIPS HAWKS, CLINCHES TOP SPOT IN EAST

Atlanta, GA (AP) - Orlando was flying high in Atlanta, as an 84-81 victory on the road clinched a division title and the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Magic were able to hold off a late run by the Hawks to pick up the victory. Neither team shot the ball particularly well. Atlanta only shot 36% from the field for the game, including just 20% (4-20) from behind the arc. Orlando barely shot 40% from the floor, and only connected on 5-27 from long distance. Still, it was enough for the win, and star forward Brian Happel was already looking forward to the playoffs, "Home court advantage is huge. I really like what this does for our chances. With the greatest fans in the NBA behind us, I don't see how we can lose."

Happel had the Hawks feeling like they were stuck in the headlights all game long

Happel led the way on offense, scoring 39 points (including 11 in the fourth quarter). He also grabbed a game high 17 rebounds. Dwight Howard also put on quite a show, nearly turning in a triple double. The Magic center scored 12 points, picked up 15 boards and had 9 assists. John Salmons really struggled, and Orlando will need him to pick it up if the team is going to make a deep run in the playoffs. Salmons was just 2-13 from the field and a terrible 1-6 from three-point land.

Happel picked up a big block from behind to stop an easy bucket

For the Hawks, Jamal Crawford struggled for much of the game, but he picked it up in the fourth quarter, ultimately scoring 22 points. Joe Johnson chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds. The main concern for Orlando will be healing and resting up ahead of the start of the playoffs. Point Guard Gilbert Arenas suffered back spasms in the game, but said he'd try to play through it afterwards.

Ridley the Tigers running back ran all over them carrying the load for the team. He finished the night with 191 rushing yards and a touchdown. "We went out and executed, we didn't take this team for granted and we played tonight like it was a national championship game".Said by Les Miles. The Tigers defense again forced turnovers and created havoc for the opposing quarterback. Another great performance was by the QB Jordan Jefferson who threw 3 touchdowns on the day. Next up for the Tigers is Cam Newton and his #15 Tigers.

He made the defense look like fools he completed 14 passes and threw for 419 yards that included 4 TD throws. The Gators offense had their problems on their on turning the ball over 5 times to the Tigers defense, which took advantage of them and set up the offense in good field position. The Tigers are looking like a team that can't be stop. Just ask the Gators what happened to them.

ORLANDO BURNS HEAT, TAKES OVER TOP SPOT IN THE EAST

Orlando, FL (AP) - The Magic control their own destiny, at least when it comes to the number one seed in the East. A 101-88 win at home against rival Miami put Orlando alone in the top spot. If Orlando wins at Atlanta on Friday night, the Magic will clinch the number one seed and face Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs. Orlando used a huge second quarter to pull out in front of the Heat by halftime. The Magic outscored Miami 36-18 in the second frame, with Orlando hitting on 65% of its shots. The Heat were ice cold in that quarter, shooting a dismal 28% from the field. Miami outscored the Magic 31-21 in the third quarter to get within 5. But, Orlando quickly pulled ahead in the fourth and never gave up the lead.

LeBron's Heat had a tough night, as Happel may have helped swat away Miami's chances at a number 1 seed

Star forward Brian Happel bolstered his case for MVP, scoring 30 points and grabbing 18 rebounds (including 15 boards in the first half). Happel went toe-to-toe with LeBron, who had 32 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. It was one of those games where the stars cancelled themselves out, and Happel knew his teammates had to focus on stopping the other guys, "Sure we had some plans going in to try to limit LeBron's effectiveness, but when a guy that good is going off, all that goes out the window. At a certain point, you just figure he's going to get his, and you focus on stopping the other guys on the team instead."

Being surrounded didn't bother Happel, as he still put it down hard in traffic

Gilbert Arenas was one of four Orlando players to score in double-figures. Arenas had 18 points and dished out 7 dimes. Dwight Howard and Brandon Bass pulled in 8 boards a piece. Howard also got 4 blocked shots. Orlando's defense was key, holding Dwayne Wade to just 16 points and Chris Bosh with just 13 points on 6-15 shooting.

Miami's "Big 3" could only watch as Happel and his Magic tore through the Heat

Orlando has now won 9 games in a row and 17 out of their last 18. The Magic finish their regular season on the road against Atlanta, which is playoff bound with a 47-34 record. But, the Hawks have struggled as of late, going 5-5 in their last 10 games.
