EA Sports UFC: Learn the Vernacular of MMA

A few years ago, I stumbled across a sport that was quickly sweeping the entire country off of its feet. On its face, there didn't seem a whole lot to UFC. The stronger, faster guys always wins, right?

Well, not so much. I quickly learned that a fight between two greats in the octagon is a lot like a game of chess sped up multiple times with extremely violent consequences. Every wrong move is felt, and detrimental to the fighter's odds of winning the fight. Conversely, every right move is cause for celebration - even though there is little time to celebrate it.

So it didn't take long for me to realize that there was an entire science to everything that was done in the octagon. Beyond that science, there were dozens of terms that made absolutely no sense to me. Eventually I caught on, but more so than almost any other sport I've watched, UFC verbiage can be extremely difficult to learn.

So just incase you are as hooked on EA Sport's UFC as I am, we decided to throw together a lengthy summary of some of the UFC's most used terms that might be helpful for newcomers (with corresponding controls for moves, attached):

Armbar/Arm Drag: An armbar is one of the most common submission moves in the UFC. The goal is to hyper-extend or literally break the arm until the point of your opponent's submission.

How to do it: On the ground, press RB + swing the right stick.

Bout: Another name for fight, matchup, contest, etc.

Brazilian Ju-Jitsu: At its most basic, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu is a grabbling technique that gets fighter's into better position for submissions and high-leverage ground situations.

Cauliflower Ear: One of the more brutal physical consequences of UFC and wrestling in general, the Cauliflower Ear usually comes about after intense and repeated contact with a fighter's ear, causing the ear to bloat.

Clinch: When two fighters are in a standing position and move into a grappling position.

How to do it: Flick the right stick, while standing close to your opponent.

Decision: In it's basic form, the decision is the outcome of the match. More specifically, it is decision of three different judges, all who score the fight round by round.

Foul: Even though you aren't likely to see it in EA Sport's UFC, a foul is an illegal move by one of the fighters. Not only is it grounds for disqualification, but its frowned upon by fighters and fans alike.

Ground-And-Pound: When two fighter's hit the ground, one is usually in a position to pound into the more vulnerable fighter. What these two fighters do - outside of submission techniques - is referred to as the Ground-And-Pound.

Guard: When a fighter is on their back, the guard (half and full) is a position in which they can keep their opponent between their legs.

How do to it: Flick the right stick on your back to move into the guard, and press RT + the right stick to defend against your opponent moving into the guard.

Judo: Another art-form of fighting, Judo is typically used in the ground game, and used in both submission and throw techniques.

Knockout: Seems obvious, right? A knockout occurs when one (or very rarely, both) fighters cannot continue onto the finish of the fight.

Leglock: As a fighter, getting yourself into a position of making your opponent submit via stressing their leg.

How to do it: In the ground position, press RB and flick the right stick.

Lightweight: A class of fighters between the weight of 146 pounds, and 155 pounds.

Mount: The fighter with the more dominant position on the ground is typically in a mount. This position is ideal for knocking your opponent out before they can get back up.

How to do it: While on top, flick the left stick upwards.

Muay Thai: Muay Thai may yield the most damaging results in UFC, as it uses an array of high leg kicks, punches, and elbow strikes.

Naked Choke: When a fighter uses their position to submit an opponent (basically making them choke) from a blind-spot on the ground.

How to do it: Shift your fighter on the ground using the right-stick until they are behind your opponent. At this point, press RB and flick the right stick.

No Contest: Again, there probably isn't a situation in which you would see this in EA Sport's UFC, but a no-contest is only ruled if a fight never actually takes place.

Side-Control: Similar to a mount, only on the side of a fighter (when on the ground) rather than right above them.

How to do it: Flick the right stick when on top with your fighter. Or, you can use a one legged takedown when standing (LT + swinging the right stick).

Sprawl: When a fighter throws their weight on top of an oncoming takedown attempt.

How to do it: Press RT while flicking the right stick (standing).

Superman Punch: One of the most devastating strikes in UFC, the Superman Punch takes place when a fighter fakes with a kick, and used the momentum to instead land a punch.

How to do it: While standing, press LB and Y or Triangle.

Submission: Making a player "tapout" or to end the match prematurely via a grabble that forces the opponent to concede the fight.

How to do it: When on the ground, press RB and flick the right stick.

Tae Kwon Do: A fighting style that heavily emphasizes powerful kicks.

Tapout: See "submission".

TKO: Technical Knock-Out.

Triangle Choke: When a fighter uses both of their legs to choke out the opponent's neck in an attempt to get them to submit.

How to do it: When on the ground, shift your player with the right-stick until you get your opponent in a vulnerable position, and then hit RB and swing the right stick upwards.

Weight Classes: This is what separates fighters into specific weight divisions. Among the classes are Flyweight (lightest) to Heavyweight (heaviest).

Naked choke is just a choke without a gi. The "blind spot" you are talking about is the Rear part of it.

Correct, sorry for the fuzzy description.
