In Celebration of All the Madden Players That Will Never Exist

Every year, NFL fans pick up a copy of the new Madden game for a chance to put themselves in the shoes of elite players like Aaron Rodgers and Cam Newton. Or maybe they hope to accomplish things that would likely not happen in real life, like leading the Browns to a Super Bowl, or plugging Tim Tebow in at quarterback and having him actually complete a pass.

But for me, the best of part of Madden only occurs once I’ve finished a season or two of my franchise and begun to draft the players that will slowly become the future of my team. Because as fun as it is to be able to control all of those intricately replicated real players, the game truly comes to life as you accumulate guys who not only will never play football in real life but will never even have a chance to exist.

What's Your Name?

It usually starts with a name. I’ve always been drawn more to players in draft classes whose names attract the eye. While quarterback Jimmy Smith might be the hot prospect that’s at the top of everyone’s draft boards, I’ll have my eye on the wide receiver with the unfortunate/brilliant name of Johnson Johnson -- the player so nice they named him twice.

The beauty of all these new players invented year after year for the draft is that there’s no real information on these guys. Aside from physical attributes, what school they attended, what scheme they prefer and a few scouting assessments, they are all blank slates and we’re free to imagine anything that we like about them.

For instance, Johnson Johnson came from a very poor family who couldn’t even afford to give him two different names. He broke his foot in high school while stealing a loaf of bread to feed his hungry brothers and sisters -- all eight of them -- and was forced to miss most of his senior year. Shortly after being drafted out of Notre Dame (where he graduated with honors) and signing a big contract with my team, he moved them all into a huge mansion and then met the love of his life, Phyllis -- a doctor. That’s right, Johnson Johnson started from the bottom -- now he’s here -- and I’m only happy I had a hand in making it all happen for him.

Creating A Monster

That’s only just the beginning for guys like Johnson Johnson. Once they hit the field, they start accomplishing things that can lead to them becoming the biggest superstars in the league, soon eclipsing the real-life superstars like Antonio Brown when those poor guys begin to get old and slow. Sure, maybe you target Johnson a little more than other guys with your quarterback because you know and love the kid, but who cares when he’s racking up games with 300 yards receiving because of it?

And once you’ve played enough seasons of your franchise, the inevitable happens even to Johnson Squared (his nickname, obviously). He’s eventually forced to retire and, though you know he’ll do just fine in his second career as a broadcaster/actor/humanitarian, you can’t help but get a little emotional when he plays his last game. You watched the kid crawl his way out of poverty and make something of himself on the football field that will surely land him in Canton someday, but damn, you’re really going to miss the guy.

Changing Imaginary Lives

Every year, I’m tempted to immediately simulate 10 years into the future when I start my franchise just so I’ll be surrounded by all of these fictitious players longing for a backstory right off the bat. But somehow it just wouldn’t be the same. It’s much better to let them slowly come into your life, mingling with the real players and giving you a better opportunity to get acquainted with them so you can learn how to properly utilize their greatness.

Over my many years of playing Madden, I’ve had the great fortune to be able to mold some legends. Sure, there have been some choice names -- like an Asian Glass I remember being drafted last year -- that don’t amount to much more than a laugh before flaming out once they hit the field. But the great ones stay with you and become just as ingrained into the fabric of football as any other great who actually played the game for real.

I laughed way too hard at his this. There have been a lot of names over the years that were pretty funny. There was a thread a while back that created funny stories about a lot of the names.

I can for sure relate to this. This will age me, but when we were kids we played one of those card-based strategy games (Statis Pro Football) and my buddies and I would make our own players and we put them on the Raiders - that was, what, 1987. We had a QB, a DE, and a CB. Then when video games started coming out we'd put those same guys on the Raiders - I remember we played a ton with NFL Football on the Sega Genesis. Back in those days the games didn't keep track of stats for the season so we had binders of stats to track the career stats and season stats.

Then with Madden, every year I'd get the game, play the franchise mode and the first thing I do is create those three players. Still doing it with this year's iteration. I must have played a hundred seasons of football with the Raiders and those three players... that will never exist.

So here's to you - Greg Zuccolotto, you shifty undersized lefty QB from Hawaii. And Mark Freeman - you pass rushing beast from USC. And to you Evander Castle - you ball hawking shutdown corner/return specialist speedster from Michigan. You've been the core of the franchise for a century.

My favorite EA sports generated guy was a WR/DB hybrid in NCAA Football named Frank Powell (see my profile picture). He turned my Wyoming program into an elite program, playing both sides of the ball. Oh also, he could play QB. Eventually he lead me to the National Championship where he returned a punt for a touchdown making it a one score game with 1 minute to go. I ended up winning on a national championship winning hail mary to defeat Texas who went on to become my arch rivals after I joined the BIG12.

The legend of Frank Powell aka 'Boom Boom Powell' went on for 4 years as he collected countless awards and accolades. I ended up renaming the stadium to Frank Powell Memorial Stadium and retired his number. After sending the draft class over to Madden he had a decent NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. 20 Years later, my Wyoming team is still a powerhouse and in the midst of the greatest NCAA Football dynasty of all time - and it all started thanks to him.

I've never had a guy in Madden have anywhere near the same effect on a franchise as Frank Powell. And I don't think any generated recruit or draft pick will ever mean the same to me as he did. He was the embodiment of the word 'Legend'.

Madden 16 I was able to draft the greatest CB ever, future hall of famer, the great, Mack Mack.

So nice his Mama named him twice!

I've seen some beasts in Madden, but the best game generated player I ever saw was several seasons into my NCAA 14 Dynasty. He was the #1 overall recruit, a WR by the name of Columbus Sweet (great name, too). I didn't get him, but Florida did and he broke all the career receiving records there.

Wish I had kept his stats or at least exported the draft class to Madden to see how he would've done in the pros.

Mostly from NCAA days, but some great names I recall between some friends and me:

USC brothers and teammates LB Bubba Cork and QB Lorenzo Cork.
OSU RB Rodney Dangerfield (no respect!)
Thomas Thomas (cousin to Johnson & Johnson...of course he married a doctor!)
William Gilliam (Heisman Trophy winner, from what I recall my friend stiffarm telling me)

Many more!

I swear, I'd pay twice the price for NCAA to come back. The gameplay in Madden 16 with the depth of Dynasty mode in NCAA 14 .....I can only dream.

I miss being able to import my draft classes into Madden. Flipping back and forth between the games and always feeling some level of connection with the players years later in Madden because I "watched them" play college ball.

One of the greatest stories I have ever read. And yet, so sad, as NCAA has been cast aside.

I want NCAA back so bad because of stories like this. The recruiting was the best ever.

IMO, the best part of playing NCAA games (football and college hoops). Especially if you get super immersed in the college games. Like maybe you recruited a player that was a major pain, but you're happy to see them get drafted.

Last year I had a CB named Adonis Rock. He got drafted by the Saints though. I loved that name.

What NCAA game was that? 12? 13? 14?

This is my favorite thing about Madden and was my favorite thing on NCAA. I always sim the first season and look for rookies or freshmen that'd be fun to build my team around.

This is awesome, reminds me of an ATH I recruited in NCAA 14 to Iowa State, my only 4 star in my first recruiting class, Ron Upshaw. He had the skills to play Safety, Receiver, Half Back and QB. Ultimately I made him QB, where he was Nick Marshall-like. 3 All-American 1st team selections, a heisman, 2 Maxwell Awards , 2 O'Brien's, a national championship and the beginning of an amazing dynasty.

I would've love to bring him over to Madden, even though his passing attributes weren't great. Change him to a safety or a wideout and watch his career play out in full, even if he was a bust. I hope the NCAA games can come back.

Not as good as the days when we could control a player for 4 years in college, watch how his college career played out, then draft him in Madden and see if the Heisman winner could make it in the NFL. Now we have to just imagine, because there's no NCAA to play. It really takes a lot of the fun away not having that chance to control a player's entire career.
