Journey of a Disabled Baseballer - Intro
Posted on April 25, 2011 at 02:11 AM.
My name is Fraser Fyfe, I am 17 years old and I am disabled.

I have had Cerebral Palsy since birth and have gone through having to have all the bones in my legs broken for an operation when I was eight, to then having to learn how to walk again over a period of two years. Now you might say "That sucks" but I look at it as making the best of a bad situation, my legs were the only thing affected and the only way you would know is when I walked.

I was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia and have loved sports for all my life. I love my country's sports but I have always had a facination and love for "American" sports such as baseball, ice hockey and basketball et cetera. The fact that many of these sports were rarely ever shown when I was growing up gave them this mysterious and I guess you could say "forbidden" quality about them, and that just made me love them even more.

At school I was always picked last for sports, I couldn't kick a ball to save my life and even when I was decent at something, the ball never came my way. In the end I never cared and was just happy to get out and play. I never did any club sport as I believed I hadn't reached that level of ability to play. I reached a point where I loved sports, but couldn't play. I was never teased and always took a positive attitude towards everything, so I never gave up hope that one day I would play a sport and play it well.

Up until high school, I never really though about it again and just proceeded to live my life. But now with the ability to watch those sports that were once "forbidden" online, I started to get the itch again, except this time, I scratched it. By this point I started going to a gym. I always hated doing stretching and other flexibility related excercise when I was a kid because it was forced upon me. I was always in a souless room and the last place you want to be when you're a kid is in a hospital environment. Only thing is that now I could see the importance of this which gave me the motivation to get better. I ended up doing gym work twice a week for two years until I had to leave due to financial and logistical problems. I had to find another way to get better.

I started looking at sports and seeing whether they would suit me. Eventually I landed upon baseball, it was perfect for someone in my situation. Baseball has always been a passion of mine and the fact that I had a club near my house was enough to get me to enquire. Sure enough, in 2009 I was now part of the East Torrens Red Sox.

Hopefully you enjoyed that as I will be updating this hopefully every week to tell you the journey of how I got to where I am today.

Special thanks to Steve Bartlett for giving me the inspiration with his MMA blogs.
