Surprised that no one has mentioned that they will have Nextel replacing Winston as the title sponsor.

I'd also remember something about them getting rid of the darlington race or something. Moving it to Nevada or California or somewhere west.

I'm still very leary about this whole idea. Nextel doesn't seem to me to be a solid enough company to take on this much responsibility. I just have this vision of "speedblock" and Darrell Waltrip where they set everything up, got a ton of publicity then went belly up and never paid a penny.
I truly dislike Nextel but thats not my main reason I'm not thrilled. The Title Sponsor for Winston Cup really ought to be a company who's been involved and in the sport for a long period of time. I could live with things like: Mcdonald's Budweiser Kodak Tide or their parent companies. Hell I'd even acept a different tobacco company. bah, either way, I'm not happy about this at all. I want them to keep the name Winston Cup. its not like the word Winston must be related to tobacco, but I know even that won't happen. Sux Ass |

Instead of headsets, all the drivers will communicate with their pit crews via a cell phone now.

..and they can have that Fat Guy from NYPD Blue (as well as Nextel Commercial Fame) try to chase down the Cars on the Track during the race in a Police Cruiser..
Now that would be worth watching.

I started to bring this up but really wasn't in the mood to handle the occasional trolling post it seemed likely to inspire.
Since the subject is on the table though ... I've got some reservations about this deal myself, primarily based on doubts that Nextel can handle the financial committment over the long haul. This may be the start of "musical sponsors" for NASCAR, with several companies rotating through the title spot before one finally sticks. It'll also be interesting to see how competing sponsors (Cingluar comes to mind) react to having Nextel as the title brand.

I meant it as a serious post, I can see NASCAR trying to look more national, but I would have bet the ranch that McDonald's or Coke/Pepsi would have been the dance partner.

As involved as Coke is, and given it's history of being willing to spend the advertising dollars, I kind of expected them to step in if Winston backed out. And it probably would have been called the Coca Cola Cup or Coca Cola Championship. Oh well. I can only dream.
