Unhappy not feeling good

Maybe some of you have read about it, maybe not, but my wife is pregnant with our second child, due for early January 2004.

Now today she had a routine check up visit with her doc (she's 10-11 weeks pregnant) but something came up. The doc was not able to hear the baby's heartbeat This is freaking us out.

Her doc told her not to worry as they usually hear the baby's heartbeat between week 10 and 12, but sometimes not. She will have an ultrasound tomorrow afternoon and then we should be able to see if everything is alright (i.e. if the baby is alive).

I feel really down right now... I was all happy for GrantDawg (new baby) and DolphinFan (recounted his ultrasound experience) but this hits me hard...

Not much we can do, guess we'll know more tomorrow...

Buck up. I bet in ten years this will be nothing more than a story your kid is tired of hearing.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you man I hate to post it here but I've felt like posting something all day but didn't want to draw the attention. My girlfriend of 6 months and I broke up today. I feel/felt like she was the one, and I'm kinda crushed by the idea she doesn't feel the same way. Anyway, enough of that I know in the big picture that's nothing, I just didn't want to post my crappy feelings in a new thread.

I hope everything is okay. Really, I've got my fingers crossed, keep your hopes up and think positive and let us know how it turns out.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as well. I do know that it is very true that many babies' heart cannot be heard til later in life. I know one patient I took care of in Medical School, none of us could hear her baby's heart til week 14 or so. I hope this turns out ok.

Don't sweat it. We had the same "issue" with our first child. Do you have any idea just how small your child's heart is right now?

Like Fritz said, oh froggie buddy of mine, it's all good. Probably not going to be easy to be 'fine,' but this is probably nothing at all. I'll keep you and yours in my thoughts.

Sorry you're going through that, FrogMan. I will admit I have no idea how long the process of an ultrasound can take, but I'm guessing it couldn't be done today? It seems awfully heartless to force a young couple to go through a day and a night wondering about the health of their unborn child.

Thanks guys, you're all great! FOFC is really a great community.

We really hope you're right and we can tell that freakish episode at our kid's wedding someday, we do.

Eaglesfan, seeing you're the house doctor, your comments give me hope. I've been searching all over the place on the net and I've read many stories of babies' heartbeat not heard until sometimes the 15th weeks...

Chief, my wife went alone as it was a routine check up. Her appointment was kind of late at the end of the afternoon and she said her doc got on the phone and tried to arrange something for this afternoon. The earliest they had was tomorrow...

Thanks again guys. I'll keep you posted, with good news hopefully...

I'm no doctor,
but I remember how hard it was sometimes to get Graham's heartbeat. we had different midwives almost every visit, and some could find it right away, some really struggled - kind of like nurses trying to find a vein, some are better than others.

we had troubles during delivery with the heartbeat. we had a very hard time getting a consistent beat during labor, which caused a great deal of panicking among the staff (and, um, me), but it was all fine in the end.

My wife is pregnant now, too... due late October. She had the same problem when she first went in for the fetal heartbeat. Not to worry. They can be tough to find. Now when she goes in, the sucker is loud as a locomotive.

GREAT NEWS!

We just got back from the ultrasound and it turns out everything's fine, we saw the tiny heart beat like a drum

We freaked out for nothing after all. What made it even worse was something I left out of my first post. The doc had also told my wife that she thought the baby was sort behind in the growth curve. Sort of like she felt the baby was in the 7th or 8th week instead of the 11th or 12th. Couple that with no heartbeat and the rational, analytical persons that we are were already thinking about a dead baby that had stopped living... But it's not the case, the heart beats normally, and even though it's way too early to see if everything is there in terms of organs and everything, the technician measured the baby to be about 10.6 weeks along, which fits pretty well with what my wife had calculated

We're amazingly relieved. Thank you very much everyone that sent thoughts our way, you guys are great!!!

It's actually my second, I went to my son's ultrasound but that was 6 years ago

Gotta say that this one was kind of magical though

As Fritz said above, this is the kind of story we'll be telling for years to come, how we nervous that kid made us, way before he was even born

PS: Good luck to you too FranklinNoble!

Good to hear! What's almost as sobering as the fraility of life is the ability of our bodies to struggle and fight to live. As for myself, I was born about two months premature (expected July 5, born May 19). That was quite a shock to my parents, and they spent many a night anxiously praying over me, I'm sure. Continued blessing on you and your wife throughout the course of the pregnancy. You're in my prayers!
