Best Team in NY Yankees History Tourny.
In this New York Yankees 100th Anniversary Season what if some of the old Yankees teams were put into a 32-Team Tournament to determine what was the best Yankees team of all time? 26 Championship Teams and 6 Wild Card Teams of my choosing that came close but lost in the World Series. We will use WHATIFSPORTS.COM to simulate this tournament for FUN and post our results here. This will be my first ever post here, so any feedback is welcome. 1st Round = 5 Game Series, 2nd Round On = 7 Game Series **-indicates Wild Card Team

Roger Clemens 20-3, 3.51 ERA ('01) @ Lefty Gomez 21-11, 2.33 ERA ('37) . . . . Game 1 was featured two 20 game winners and it was billed as a dream matchup. Left Gomez and Clemens exchanged scoreless first innings, while the highlight came when Clemens got DiMaggio to fly out, and Gehrig to ground out. The scoring began in the bottom of the second as Myril Hoag got an RBI single. 1-0 1937 Yankees... Top 4 the 2001 Yankees who had yet to get a hit started up. Bernie Williams walked, and Jorge Posada reached on an error by Frankie Crosetti. "Yankee Captain" Derek Jeter got an RBI Single, and Scott Brosius later followed with the same. 2-1 2001 Yankees (Top 4). The 1937 Yanks have already made 2 Errors... Top 5 Paul O'Neill singles off Gomez, Tino Martinez doubles scoring O'Neill 3-1. . A few scoreless innings follow until Jeter knocks in his 2nd Run making it 4-1 in the top of the eighth. Ninth Clemens gives up a double to George Selkirk and Joe Torre decides to bring in Mariano Rivera. He gets Hoag to ground out, advancing Selkirk to third. Tommy Henrich came into pinch hit for the pitcher and drives home Selkirk with a fly out to left making it 4-2. Crosetti gets a single, but Mo fans Red Rolfe to end the game. FINAL SCORE: (27) 2001 Yankees 4 @ (6) 1937 Yankees 2 GAME MVP: Lefty Gomez who struck out ten in a losing effort. My pick: Jeter SERIES: 2001 Yankees Lead 1-0 GAME 2 Mike Mussina 17-11, 3.15 ERA ('01) @ Red Ruffing 20-7, 2.98 ERA ('37) . . Top 4 Bernie Williams, Posada single to start off the inning. Justice drives in Williams with a single. Scott Brousis delivered another hit, followed by a Mussina single. Two more runs as the '01 Yankees took a 3-0 Lead. Bottom 4 Mike Mussina who is not known to concentrate when he gets runs for some reason gives up Singles to DiMaggio & Gehrig. Mussina decides to challenge Bill Dickey and he promptly smashes a 3 Run Homer making the score 3-3 after 4 Full. It took the '01 Yankees till the top of the 6th to score again. Brosius walked, out, Soriano single, O'Neill walk to load the bases. Tino Martinez steps in and flies to shallow left. Willie Randolph kept Brosius at third for Bernie Williams who delivered a two RBI basehit. Posada walks, and Derek Jeter struck again with a basehit scoring a few more. 7-3 '01 Yankees. Red Ruffing was replaced by Ivy Andrews. The pitchers settled down till the bottom of the ninth. The 1937 Yankees looked for some late inning thunder. Roy Johnson pinch hitting for Frank Makosky got a one-out double. Mussina was pulled for Mike Stanton. He quickly got Crosetti to pop up for the second out, than Stanton fell apart. Rolfe single, 1st & 3rd with Joe DiMaggio stepping in. DiMaggio clubs a double down the RF line past O'Neill two runs score making it 7-5!! Torre pulls Stanton for Rivera. What a matchup! Gehrig vs. Rivera!! Who wins this battle? Gehrig! RBI double to right center making it 7-6!! It was up to Bill Dickey who had a HR earlier in the game but Mariano threw a cutter inside, breaking the bat of Dickey who hit a slow dribbler to Tino at 1st to end the game! FINAL SCORE: (27) 2001 Yankees 7 @ (6) 1937 Yankees 6 GAME MVP: Joe DiMaggio 4-5, 2 RBI SERIES: 2001 Yankees Lead 2-0 GAME 3 Spud Chandler 7-4, 2.84 ERA ('37) @ Andy Pettitte 15-10, 3.99 ERA . . . The 1937 will not go away easily! They just dominate Andy Pettitte and 2001 Yankee Pitching with a 15 Run Outburst!! The only run the 2001 Yankees would score would be a Paul O'Neill Solo Shot. Pettitte 4IP,9H,7ER. DiMaggio 4-6,3R, 3RBI, 2 3b, 2b, Gehrig 3-6 2 Triples, Tommy Henrich 3-4 2 HRs in an amazing offensive display. FINAL SCORE: (6) 1937 Yankees 15 @ (27) 2001 Yankees 1 GAME MVP: Joe DiMaggio (stats above) SERIES: 2001 Yankees Lead 2-1 GAME 4 Monty Pearson 9-3, 3.17 ERA ('37) @ Orlando Hernandez 4-7, 4.85 ERA. . . Both teams went with there #4 Starters and both seemed up to the task for the first three innings. Top 4 Tommy Henrich drove in the 1st run of the Game with an RBI Single, in the bottom of the frame Scott Brosius tied it with a RBI single. 1-1... Bottom 7 the 2001 Yankees put the nail into the coffin as Knoblauch walked, Soriano gets hit by a pitch. O'Neill RBI single to RF, Tino Out, Bernie walks, and Posada gets a 2 RBI single to make it 4-1. The '01 Yankees dugout was ready to move on to face the 1962 Yankees as they were 6 outs away. "El Duque" Orlando Hernandez pitched 7 Strong, but in the 8th Lazzeri, single scoring Lou Gehrig makes it 4-2. The bases were walked loaded and Myril Hoag Walked making it 4-3. Tommy Henrich Walked! 4-4... Frankie Corsetti lined out but Red Rolfe got a baseball scoring 2 more! 6-4 '37 Yankees! Orlando Hernandez was then pulled! Torre kept him in too long, and Mike Stanton came in to K DiMaggio to get out #2. However, if you get DiMaggio you probably won't get Gehrig. Gehrig drove in the 6th Run of the inning making it 7-4 '37 Yankees and that would be your ball game. Series will go to a deciding GAME 5! Key to the game was Orlando staying in too long, and walking home the tying runs. FINAL SCORE: (6) 1937 Yankees 7 @ (27) 2001 Yankees 4 GAME MVP: Monte Pearson ('37) Win, 9IP, 10 Hits,5 BB, 6K, 140 Pitches SERIES: TIED 2-2 GAME 5 Roger Clemens 20-3, 3.51 ERA ('01) @ Lefty Gomez 21-11, 2.33 ERA ('37) . . . Bottom 2 Lefty Gomez helps his cause getting an RBI Single. 1-0 '37 Yankees. Top 3 Scott Brousis comes back hitting a solo shot 1-1... Bottom 4 Frankie Crosetti hits a Solo Homer making it 2-1. '01 Yankees come right back Jeter Walk, Steals Second, Justice basehit drives him in. 2-2 after 5. Clemens got in trouble numerous times but the 1937 Yankees could not get to him until the bottom of the 8th on a Red Rolfe Single. 3-2 1937 Yankees after 8! Top 9... Bernie Williams lead off double. Lefty Gomez is replaced by Johnny Murphy. Murphy k's Posada, and in steps Derek Jeter. The Yankee captain nailed the first pitch he saw for a 2 RUN SHOT! 4-3 '01 Yankees! Justice Walked, and he came around to score on a Brosius double making it 5-3 after 8 1/2 innings. Last licks for the '37 Yanks. Lou Gehrig single leads off the inning. Bill Dickey gets a double making it 2nd a 3rd Nobody out! Torre pulls Clemens in favor of Rivera. Lazzeri grounds out to short, runners stay put. 1 out. George Selkirk hits a single into right past a diving Alfonso Soriano scoring Gehrig! 5-4! Mariano now has 1st & 3rd 1 Out! Myril Hoag steps in and lines out to Tino at first! Huge! 2 Outs. Mariano trying to get out of trouble and save the game when Tommy Henrich stepped in for the pitcher. It was a battle and Rivera strikes out Henrich who was so important earlier in the series! '01 Yankees win! Rivera saves his 3rd Game. You can make a case for Jeter or Rivera as the Series MVP FINAL SCORE: (27) 2001 Yankees 5 @ (6) 1937 Yankees 4 GAME MVP: Derek Jeter (Game Winning HR) SERIES: 2001 Yankees Win 3-2! Ron Guidry 11-5, 2.76 Era ('81) @ David Wells 18-4, 3.49 Era ('98) . . . Joe Torre used Shane Spencer as DH in Game 1, and the 81 Yankees are going with Lou Pinella. The scoring got started in the Top of the 2nd as the heavy underdog 1981 Yankees had Slugger Reggie Jackson hit a Solo Homer off of David Wells. The 1998 Yankees answered in the bottom of the 3rd with a Posada HR, and in the Bottom of the 4th with a Tino Martinez Solo Shot. That is all the offense the 1998 Yankees would need as they went on to win a pretty uneventful Game 1. FINAL SCORE: (32) 1981 Yankees 1 @ (1) 1998 Yankees 3 GAME MVP: David Wells 9 IP, 8 Hits, 1 ER, 7 SO, 0 BB SERIES: 1998 Yankees Lead 1-0 Game 2 Tommy John 9-8, 2.63 Era ('81) @ David Cone 20-7, 3.55 Era ('98) . . . The 1998 Yankees continued there dominance over the 1981 Yankees with an excellent team performance. David Cone pitched a 2 Hit Shutout and the 1998 Yankees scored 4 in the 4th and 3 in the 6th. RBIs for Knobluach, Jeter, O'Neill, Bernie, Tino, and 2 for Shane Spencer. Lou Pinella for the 1981 Yankees is 2-6 in the series, and it looks like a chance will be made in Game 3 to add more power to the lineup. The 81 Yankees Graig Nettles 3K's, Reggie 2Ks, Cerone 2Ks. Only hits by Bobby Murcer. Down 0-2 the 1981 Yankees sent Dave Righetti to the mound. At this point in his career 1981, Righetti was a starter, and even pitched a No-hitter in 1983 against the Red Soxs. Righetti had the same type stuff for this game. Orlando Hernandez surrendered a GRAND SLAM to Jerry Mumphrey in the bottom of the 1st, and that was all she wrote. Oscar Gamble replaced Sweet Lou in the lineup but went 0-3, 1 K. Reggie Jackson & Graig Nettles continued to struggle. They are a combined 1-14 with 10 K's thus far, but there team has gotten back into this series. Pretty much what this series has been to this point. A pitchers dual. Andy Pettitte and Rudy May went at it and Rudy May shut down the 98 New York Yankees offense for a second consecutive game. He pitched 8.2, fanning 10, and Goose Gossage came into get the final out in a 1-0 Victory. Nettles & Reggie answered the call today. Nettles 2-3 1 Run Score, Reggie Jackson 1-4 RBI Double. Another 5 Game Series!! FINAL SCORE: (1) 1998 Yankees 0 @ (32) 1981 Yankees 1 GAME MVP: Rudy May SERIES: Tied 2-2 Game 5 Game 1 Ron Guidry 11-5, 2.76 Era ('81) @ David Wells 18-4, 3.49 Era ('98) . . . It was ANOTHER shutout. The 4th Consecutive Shut Out in this series, and probably the most impressive. David Wells pitched a 1 hit shut out. The 1998 Yankees bats finally came to life after 2 horrible games scoring 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 7th, and 2 in the 8th. The story of this series was the pitching! The 1998 Escape to the 2nd Round & become the 1st Championship Team thus far to advance. Pitching wise you might have to give the nod to the '51 Yankees having two 20-Game Winners, but the difference might by a rookie named Whitey Ford on the 1950 Team. Both teams are Championship teams so this could be another 5-Game Series. I look for the better hitting of the 1950 Team be the deciding factor in this one |

Game 1
Ed Lopat 21-9, 2.91 Era ('51) @ Vic Raschi 21-8, 4.00 Era ('50) . . . Joe DiMaggio('50) led off the scoring hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the first. We would not see anymore scoring till the Top of the 6th as the 1951 Yankees tied it up on a Yogi Berra double play which scored Phil Rizzuto. The bottom of the 6th Joe DiMaggio hit his second homerun for the '50 Yankees, this time it was a 2-Run Shot making it 3-1 1950! The 1951 Yankees got a run in the Top of the 8th on a Yogi Berra walk. The next batter was Hank Bauer who hit a ground ball in the infield, "The Scooter" Phil Rizzuto broke for home and was tagged out!!! Keeping the game at 3-2! Bottom of 8th the 1950 Yankees failed to get an insurance run. Leading to the top of the 9th. Gil McDouglad and Jerry Coleman were retired by Vic Raschi. Johnny Mize walked then Joe Collins came into pinch hit for The Pitcher Ed Lopat, Collins got a single. I would have kept Vic in, but he was replaced by Joe Page, when Phil Rizzuto lined a single scoring Mize from second! 3-3!! Mickey Mantle came up with a chance to take the lead but a young Mantle was no match for Page as he struck out. . . Bottom 9 Bob Kuzava comes into pitch for the 51 Yanks and retires the side. We will get some free baseball!! Extra Innings: Top 10 -- The 1951 Yankees come to the plate. Berra Single, Bauer K's, DiMaggio hits a FC forcing Berra at 2nd. Gil McDouglad gets a basehit. 1st & 3rd 2 Outs for Jerry Coleman who pops out the third! Still 3-3. Bottom 10, the 1950 Yankees go in order. Top 11 The 1951 Yankees get a lead off triple by Johnny Mize. Bobby Brown pinch-hits for the pitcher and drives in Mize with a basehit. Phil Rizzuto bounces into a DP. Mickey Mantle gets a single, and Yogi hits a Homerun making it 6-3! That was all the 1951 Yankees Would Need! FINAL SCORE: (17) 1951 Yankees 6 @ (16) 1950 Yankees 3 (11 Innings) GAME MVP: Yogi Berra ('51) 2-5, 3 RBIs SERIES: 1951 Yankees Lead 1-0 OTHER NOTES: Rookie Mickey Mantle has a nice showing 3-5, 1 BB, 2 Ks. Joe D of the 1950 Yankees of course with the 2 Homers. Game 2 Allie Reynolds 17-8, 3.05 Era ('51) @ Whitey Ford 9-1, 2.81 Era ('50) . . . The Rookie Whitey Ford had an impressive record coming into this one but he never faced a lineup quite like the 1951 Yankees. They pounded Ford with 2 Runs in the 2nd,3rd, 4th and added 2 more in the 8th on there way to a 8-1 Win over the 1950 Yankees! Rookie Mickey Mantle of the 1951 Yankees went one for five with a 2 Run Homer. Jerry Coleman and Phil Rizzuto for the '51 Squad each had three hits. Allie Reynolds pitches a complete game. Whitey Ford 18-7, 2.63 Era ('55) @ Waite Hoyt 22-7, 2.63 Era ('27) . . . After setting down the '55 Yankees in the top of the 1st, the 1927 Yankees came to bat. Whiety Ford went right after Combs and Tony Lazzeri, but when Babe Ruth stepped in Ford walked him. The problem with that is if you walk Ruth you have to face Gehrig, who smashed a RBI double making it 1-0 '27 Yankees. Bottom 4 the 1927 Yankees score another on a Joe Dugan Fielders choice. 2-0 '27 Yankees. In the top of the 7th, the 1955 Yankees get a 1 out double from Moose Skowron, and single from Hank Bauer. Elston Howard than tied it up with his 2nd triple of the game, Waite Hoyt went onto make an error allowing another run to score. 3-2 '55 Yankees Lead! For the first 6 innings they looked star struck but they show some life! Bottom 8, the 1927 Yankees score just like they did in the 1st. Ruth Walk, Gehrig Double. 3-3! In the ninth both lineups get shut down. We go to the 10th where in the bottom of the frame Tony Lazzeri gets a RBI single to win the game! However, Babe Ruth has been getting on base at an astounding rate in this series. He once again got a hit, and later scored on a Joe Dugan Single on the bottom of the 5th to make it 5-3 1927 Yankees. Not to be outdone, the 1955 Yankees came right back in the top of the 6th. Bill Skowron got a single, Hank Bauer popped out than Elston Howard took Herb Pennock YARD! 2 Run Shot! 5-5!! The 1955 Yankees are really challenging the heavy favorites. Top 7, The 1955 Yankees get a huge lift by a Triple from Phil Rizzuto! The 1955 Dugout was buzzing after Gil McDouglad hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Rizzuto making it 6-5 '55 Yankees! The 1955 Yankees look to get a road win, but once again fell apart in the late innings. Bottom 8, Mark Koenig single, Joe Dugan fly out, Pat Collins walk. Ben Paschal walks pinch hitting for Herb Pennock! Bases loaded one out. Earle Combs single scores a run 6-6! David Cone went 2 IP, 8 Hits, 7 Runs, 7 Earned, Mike Stanton also pitched giving up 9 Hits and 5 Runs. Spud Chander went 8 Strong allowing 7 Hits, Walking 2, and Striking out 4. Mike Stanton pitched well in relief of Clemens going 5.2, only giving up 2 Hits and Fanning 4. Andy Pettitte was up to the task of keeping his 1999 Yankees alive going 8.1, 6 Hits, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO getting the win. Borowy pitched OK but could not deal with Bernie Williams. Andy Pettitte 21-8, 3.87 Era ('96) @ Waite Hoyt 23-7, 3.36 Era ('28) . . . The Stadium was full of energy as these two teams took the field. Many experts called for a 5 Game Series, and who could argue as two of the best Yankees teams of all time are going at it for a chance to move onto the 2nd Round! The 1996 Yankees got on the board first. Wade Boggs led off the Game with a single, followed by a Jeter single. Paul O'Neill grounded into a double play which scored Boggs from 3rd. 1-0 1996 Yankees. The 1928 Yankees came to the plate in the Bottom of the Inning. Pettitte K's Lazzeri, gets Combs to fly out. In steps "The Babe". Babe Ruth took a 3-0 Pitch and crushed a Solo Shot to Center Field! 1-1.. Babe Ruth tipped his hat to Andy Pettitte as he went to the bench. After a scoreless second Jeter gets an RBI Basehit in the Top of the 3rd making it 2-1 1996 Yankees! The 1928 Yankees come right back in the bottom of the frame with 2 Outs Earle Combs walk, Babe Ruth Walk, Lou Gehrig RBI single scoring Combs! We are tied at 2! We get some clutch pitching till the 8th. The 1996 Yankees come to bat. Girardi K's, Pettitte singles, Wade Boggs Singles. Derek Jeter steps in and gets a hit scoring Pettite! 3-2, Paul O'Neill follows with another RBI Single 4-2 1996 Yankees! Much like the older Yankee teams, the 1928 Yankees come back! Rogers looked good for the first few batters before he surrendered a solo shot to Mark Koenig making it 1-0 '28 Yankees. Hank Johnson shut down the 1996 Yankees till the Bottom of the 3rd. Joe Girardi lead off single, followed by a Tim Raines Double scoring Girardi from 1st. Wade Boggs single makes it 2-1, Boggs also scored later in the inning making it 3-1 '96 Yankees. The 1928 Yankees came right back in the 4th. Lou Gehrig 1 out single, Meusel single, and Mark Koenig knocks them in with an 2 RBI Double! 3-3 . . They than added two more runs in the top of the second on an Elston Howard single followed by a Hank Bauer 2-Run Homer! 3-0 1958 Yankees! Bob Turley works 5 no-hit innings, but in the Bottom of the 6th he starts walking the entire 1941 Team and pays for it. He walked in 2 runs, and gave up an RBI Single to Joe DiMaggio to tie the Game at 3. The game stayed tied till the Ninth! The 1958 Yankees came to the plate. Andy Carey lead things off with a double. McCarthy quickly pulled Ruffing in favor of Johnny Murphy. Stengel countered by pinch hitting Enos Slaughter for Bob Turley. Slaughter made Stengel look good with a single to right! 1st & 3rd No Outs! Gil McDouglad K's. 1 Down. Norm Siebern grounds out. 2 Down. Slaughter does advance to 2nd on the play! The midseason trade for David Justice played a major role for the 2000 team, and they will need him to step it up big time, plus get the usual production from O'Neill, Bernie, Tino to win. Andy Pettitte 19-9, 4.35 ERA ('00) @ Monte Pearson 19-7, 3.71 ERA ('36) . . . . Top of the 1st with 2 Outs, Paul O'Neill doubles, followed by David Justice who doubles to right center making it 1-0, 2000 Yankees! Both pitchers had it working from this point on. We go until the 9th as it's 1-0, Pettite 8 IP, 4 Hits, 0 Runs. Pearson 8 IP, 4 Hits, 1 Run. Top 9 the 2000 Yankees look for some insurance for Pettitte or maybe even Rivera depending on what Torre wants to do. Posada and Tino Walk. Brosius flies to right by Jake Powell drops the ball!! Bases loaded for Andy Pettitte! Torre decides to keep him in and Pettitte K's. Knoblauch steps in and drills one into center! Posada scores! 2-0! Jeter steps in, and works a walk! 3-0 2000 Yankees! Bases Still loaded but O'Neill pops out, and Justice strikes out! Bottom 9 Rolfe, DiMaggio, Gehrig due up! Rolfe flies out. Top 5 in this back-and-fourth battle the 1936 Yankees get patient. DiMaggio & Gehrig work walks, and George Selkirk drives them in with a 2 out Triple!! 5-4, 2000 Yankees. Jeff Nelson would come in for Cone after that and get Lazzeri to fly out. In a battle of the Bullpens, the 2000 Yankees should win everytime and this was no different. Jeff Nelson finished the game with 4 1/3 Shutout Innings only allowing 2 hits. The 2000 Yankees also added three more runs to win 8-4! El Duque would regain his composure after getting smacked around in the first and pitched a few solid innings. His teammates gave him the opportunity to stay in the game on a Tino Martinez RBI Single in the 2nd. In the 3rd, a key play. Knobby on 2nd, Jeter on first. Gomez faces Paul O'Neill. The pitch, O'Neill laces one into the left centerfield gap! Knobby will score! DiMaggio grabs the ball in center! Jeter is being waived in by Willie Randolph! The relay throw is taken by Crosetti at short! He fires home! We have a play at the plate! The slide, the tag, he is..... OUT!! Jeter gets thrown out by his counterpart at short. Justice strikes out to end the inning. Score Tied 2-2! The 1936 Yankees would not be defeated easily in this series. They got to El Duque again in the top of the 5th. Gehrig RBI single, and Dickey RBI Double makes it 4-2. Jeff Nelson would replace Hernandez after this inning. He kept them in it but Lefty Gomez shut down the 2000 Yankees. The 1936 Yankees added two more in the Top of the 8th. The 2000 Yankees chipped away but too little too late. 1936 Yankees force a Game 5 at the Old Yankee Stadium!! Bottom 2, Selkirk one out single, Lazzeri Single, another out is made. 2 down and Pettitte looks to get out of trouble! Pearson basehit to center! 1 run will score! 1-0 1936 Yankees. Rolfe single, another two runs score and it's 3-0! DiMaggio steps in and rips an RBI single into left 4-0! The 1936 Yankees jump out to a big lead! Pearson is dominating the 2000 Yankees till the Top of the 5th as the '00 Yankees get some 2 out magic! Tino Martinez doubles, and Scott Brosius sends one into left, this ball is way out of here about 10 rows back! HOMERUN! 4-2!! Top 6 now, Jeter & O'Neill have gotten on with singles. 2 Outs. Bernie Williams steps in and smashes one up the middle! It gets by a diving Crosetti and into center! 4-3, the 2000 Yankees are getting back into this thing! The pitchers take over setting down each lineup in order till the 8th. Top 8 some more 2 out magic for the 2000 Yankees! O'Neill Single! David Justice steps in and rockets one into right center and it bounces between outfielders and into the stands for a ground rule double! 2nd & 3rd; 2 Outs! Bernie Williams up again and this time he hits one into right! O'Neill scores, he comes the throw on Justice but he is in there! 5-4 2000 Yankees! Bernie high-fives Lee Mazzelli at first! Wow! Posada steps in and he sends one into left-center! It rolls all the way to the wall! Bernie will motor home and make it 6-4 on the Posada double! We might have a huge upset on our hands! Or will we? Bottom 8, Gehrig leads off with a walk from Jeff Nelson. Dickey walks, Selkirk walks! Bases loaded no one out! Torre keeps Nelson in there to save Rivera for the Ninth! With a chance to possibly put the game away Myril Hoag pinch hitting K's and Crosetti K's! Pat Malone sets down the 2000 Yankees in The Top of the 9th, and Mariano Rivera shuts down the 1936 Yankees in the Bottom of the frame. Top 10, Pat Malone puts down Jeter, O'Neill, and Justice in order. Bottom 10 Mariano the great, the best post season closer of all time walks Selkirk to start off the inning much like the 8th! Rivera settles down and K's Lazzeri. Jake Powell steps in and rips a single into right! 1st & 3rd 1 Out! Art Jorgens comes into pinch hit for the pitcher. 3 & 2 Pitch is close, but the ump gives Jorgens first! Basesloaded and 1 out! Rivera vs. Crosetti. Rivera goes up 0-2. The pitch Crosetti slowly hits a groundball to thirdbase side! Brousis charges as the infield was in. Scott picks up the ball barehanded and flips underhand to Posada as Selkirk slides! HE IS OUT AT THE PLATE!! Great play by Brosius at 3rd! 2 Outs Bases still loaded. Red Rolfe steps in and Rivera goes 0-2 on him. Rolfe fouls off a few pitches and on about the 5th pitch of the At-Bat he slaps one over Knobbys head at second! He turns and dives! He can't make the catch!! It drops in! Powell scores! Allie Reynolds 20-8, 2.06 ERA ('52) @ Ron Guidry 16-7, 2.82 ERA ('77) . . . If you like pitching duels this was the game for you. Both pitchers had it working and shutdown each lineup. In the Bottom of the 6th Reggie Jackson (HBP) scored on a RBI Triple by Graig Nettles. That is all Ron Guidry would need. He pitched a complete game 2 Hit Shutout! The only hits he allowed were to Rizzuto & Woodling. No runner on the 1952 Team Got past Second. FINAL SCORE: (23) 1952 Yankees 0 @ (10) 1977 Yankees 1 GAME MVP: Ron Guidry -- Excellent Pitching Performance SERIES: 1977 Yankees Lead 1-0 Game 2 Vic Raschi 16-6, 2.78 ERA ('52) @ Ed Figueroa 16-11, 3.57 ERA ('77) . . . If you liked Game 1, you would have certainly liked Game 2. The 1977 Yankees managed 2 Hits, and the 1952 Managed 6. The team to score? Yes, that's right the 1977 Yankees! The pitchers settled down after that and the next scoring opportunity game in the Top of the 9th. Down 2-1. Chambliss reaches on an error, Nettles singles. Lopat is pulled in favor of Johnny Sain. Pinella grounds into a FC. Chambliss is out at third. 1 Out. Willie Randolph walks to load the bases. Cliff Johnson steps in and swings for the fences. Unfortunately for him, it went right in front of home plate! Yogi Berra stepped on the plate, and fired to first to complete the double play and the game! 2-1, 1952 Yankees win, and the 1977 Yankees blow the chance to win the series.
