Pro Football Team Database (Beta Version)

ok, after about a year of off and on work, the pro team database is nearing release - beta version available here (temporary home)

I'm giving you guys access to it now to start checking for any factual/typographical errors that I may have in there. PLEASE do this.

this is in spreadsheet format (zipped). I'll also be dumping this into an access db, but not until people have had a chance to check some of the facts. I'm also working on a program to view/organize the data (let's say you want a brief history of all the changes to the Chicago Bears organization, or Foxboro stadium, or a list of all the teams who played in Birmingham). This program isn't anything earth-shattering, but it will make life a bit easier for sorting through the 2400+ entries in the database. This program is something I'm doing in my free time, and I don't have much of that lately, so it may be a month or two before it's ready. Hell, it may never be ready...

Some notes - almost every major pro team from every pro league from the last 100 years is included (NFL, AFL, APFA, USFL, WLAF, NFLE, CFL, IRFU, WIFU, AAFC, and yes, the XFL). The only league not included (that I know of) is the WFL from the mid-70's. I do plan on adding this, but, for now, I'm still sorting through the mess of confusing changes of franchises/ownership. In all, 144 different franchises are listed, and 150-something stadiums. Each franchise is assigned an ID and each stadium as well to help unify the entries as changes are made (ie the Hoosier Dome and RCA Dome have the same stadium ID). I think this will make sense when you see it.

Accurate stadium capacities are extremely difficult to pinpoint - some stadiums this was easier to find than others. In almost all cases, different sources listed different capacities for the same stadiums (often I'd find 3 or 4 different figures). Generally, I went with whatever was closest to consensus I could find. In a lot of cases, I only had starting and current capacities, and had to kind of make a "best guess" stab at when renovations took place. This is one of the areas I'd most like to see people double-check me on.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to notate sources of individual information - my favorites folder for this project contained probably 50 websites, and that doesn't include all the additional sites pulled in by Google searches. So, if you want to know where I got a specific bit of data...your guess is as good as mine.

Please go through and see if you can find mistakes - especially if you have a good knowledge of a particular stadium (I'm sure most of the mistakes will have to do with stadiums - the team info should be pretty accurate). There's a thread started to help find info that is missing or I have major questions about, but I'm sure there's more stuff that may be wrong.

I think most of the database is pretty self-explanatory, but I can explain it more fully if you need (there isn't going to be a readme until I'm ready to post it "officially").

Questions, comments, corrections...post 'em here, PM me, email me - whatever.

here's the two links:

this is fantastic stuff. For people who are just hobbyist football historians like me, this is perfect.

CFL history is a bit sketchy, actually; even CFL's own site does a shitty job...so there's a bit of a poetic licensing there.

there actually were several different rugby leagues - made up of pro/college teams. the two big ones (Western Interprovincial Football Union and Interprovicial Rugby Football Union) were the "biggies" that became the CFL.

"British Columbia" is misspelled for the BC Lions.
