What is a comeback player?
Another awards ceremony, another "Comeback of the year" award for Tommy Maddox.
IN order to be considered for this award don't you have to have something to comeback to? So, what exactly was Maddox comming back to? Maybe this year he will be elgible as he will be coming back to the bench. A career bench warmer that never rose above 2nd string and was eventually an NFL washout. Shouldn't he of at least had one good year to be considered for "Comeback" status?

The man had thrown 9 passes in the NFL in like the last 6 years, and not started regulary for 10 years, and then came out and threw 20 touchdowns and almost 3000 yards on a team that had a run-first offense. I would say he pretty well personifies the award.

Didn't he suffer a head injury at one point in the season?

Which player do you see more deserving than Maddox for Comeback Player of the Year honors last season ?

He was a strange first round pick by the Broncos in 92 that sat behind Elwayfor two years, starting a total of 4 games. He then played two more years without starting a game before quitting...only to come back in 01. PS - Check out the numbers Maddox put up @ Ucla...his FR and SO #'s are as good as Aikman's JR and SR #'s.... |

i think he got nominated for the award because of the injury he suffered this year, i believe he won the award because he did nothing for so long and then became regarded as a quality player

Players who had "Comeback" type years last year.
Drew Bledsoe Fred Taylor Both these players were on top a couple of years ago, dropped off the map in 2001, then had "comebacks" in 2002.(Stat wise) Comeback players should of at least been on top once in their careers.

Maddox was in the NFL, then he was out of the NFL. Now he is in the NFL again. So, Maddox "came back" to the NFL.
The star player who gets injured and regains his star form is also a type of comeback player. I don't see why Maddox should not also be considered a comeback player.

I thought Robert Edwards was more deserving. The guy nearly lost his leg, then spent like 3 or 4 years busting his ass to get back into the league.

I agree. But Maddox wasn't a bad selection, just I don't think he is as deserving as Edwards...

I was watching some baseball game last week and they mentioned someone who should be the "comeback player of the year". I think it may have been Javy Lopez. In any event, they were championing a player who didn't ever go anywhere. Sure, he may have stunk last year, but coming back from a bad year shouldn't be a reason for being considered for the award. Coming back from an injury, making your way back into the league, etc. should be.

You have a point about Robert Edwards but, although his return on the field was almost miraculous, it wasn't with the same "impact" as Maddox's.
Maddox was the starting QB of a Playoff team -and played well- while Edwards was used as a reserve back all season. As for Drew Bledsoe, I don't think he should be "ranked" in that Comeback area...he just did well after a sub par seasons the year before...it's not a "comeback" it's business as usual.

Didn't he suffer a pretty bad injury that lead to Brady becoming the starter though? |

Here is my definition of a comback player. Someone who was considered a success and then overcame adversity to be successful again.
The initial definition of success can very but for Maddox that success was being a 1st round draft pick, same with Edwards. Both overcame adversity, Maddox being out of the game and his injury and Edwards injury. The both were successful again to play in the NFL. To figure out who wins it is a combination of the difficulty of the adversity and the degree of the resulting success. Edwards had a more difficult adversity but Maddox had the great sucess. It could have gone either way. However, Maddox did win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year over Edwards, therefore it makes sense for him to win the ESPY version. Todd
