Dam 56k modems suck........
I miss my DSL line so bad!!
I love sports sims games alot, but i also enjoy online FPS and some online RPG's. But on a 56k modem they all suck. I tryed playing BF1942 on a 56k modem today and it was horrible!!!! I lagged like hell on every server i tryed ![]() I bet it would be the same way playing UT2003 or any other FPS. I haven't played any online RPG's in awhile, but the last one i played was Shadowbane. I Beta tested it from day one and once i moved and had to get rid of my DSL line i stopped playing because i couldn't download the huge patches. I haven't played any since, but i bet most of them would be hard to play on a 56k. Anyone play any online FPS or online RPG's on a 56k?? and which ones do you play?? I'd like to find a new one to play.

56K eh? Well right now I am connected at 16,800 bps.
Its free so I guess I cant complain. However, I vow to one day experience the utopia that is DSL/Cable. |

I would recommend it. It's a great game, the DEVs are very active in the community. Plus it's free.

Speaking of 56 K modems...
I have not switched to dsl or cable at home yet. I have a dial up account with highstream.net (great dial up service with even better prices. check them out) Anyway, I was wondering about these companies that claim they offer 5 times the speed of dial up for 15 bucks a month. I think net zero is one of them. Their commercial advertises that you can get 5 times the speed of dial up, on a phone line, for 14.99 a month or something. I always thought that the speed of a dial up service was regulated to a max of 53 k per sec. How do these companies offer 5 times the speed of dial up? Is it worth switching from a consistent 50-52 k dial up service @ 8.99/month with highstream to a 15 dollar a month "faster" service that isn't proven to be faster than I already have? Hmmm...

Hey Illinifan what kind of graphics card do you have. I want to play America's Army but I'm afraid that my 56 k combined with my mid level graphics card will make it a bad experince.
I play Counter-Strike with a 56k modem and it goes pretty well, but you have to find a great server. I have to get a better graphics card to get a better frames per second count.

My roommate is always bitching about our cable bill, but there is no way in hell that I could ever go back to dial up. Getting on the internet while visiting my parents is pure torture....

It's a trap. Seriously, all NetZero does is use a proxy server to download text and images, compress them, and then send them to you, at which time your computer decompresses them. Sure, it's faster for text, but you basically get thumbnail images on web pages unless you choose to see them at better quality. Of course, the better the quality, the slower the download. Don't bother spending almost double the money for a simple proxy server trick.

I hate to get on some of you guys (its really none of my business), but you can now get verizon DSL for $34.99 a month. You figure you can still use your phone line, so its like getting a second line, so its like $14 bucks or so for blazing fast internet. I'm not sure how many of you are still living at home or jobless but its really not that much.
I could NEVER go back to 56k, I might not even use the internet at those speeds. |

Well, im kinda in a wierd spot in my life. My parents bought a condo on the beach and now im paying them rent each month and living in it. But my brother might be moving down from Maryland to florida were i live. So if he does then i will move out of here and get a 2 bedroom apartment with him. So, i don't wanna sign-up for a 1 year contract with verizon and get DSL. Then cancel it a month or 2 later when i move. So for now im stuck with a 56k. I will defintely be going back to a DSL/cable modem when i get a chance. But for now im screwed.

Heh, after I email a scan of my pay stub, you will understand why $35 dollars a month is far too much to pay for internet...especially when you are at work too much to use it.

Just choose one of the download places. I haven't looked for awhile, but one of the download sites wants you to pay. You don't have to. You can just go to: www.aafiles.com www.militarysim.com and get it for free.

Alright, I hate you. j/k Seriously, the thing I learned about anything fast with computers is this: You don't realize how slow your stuff is until you work on something faster. My P3 500 mHz computer was great until I got a new one. Now it is slow. My dial up was great until I spent many hours at work on our dsl. Now I hate dial up. Penis env... I mean speed envy. ![]()

I played America's army right when it came out and i liked it. But i deleted it off my computer a couplke months ago and now that im on a 56k, there's no way im downloading 400+ megs on a 56k
![]() I would try Rainbow Six 'Raven Shield' but from what i've heard. The online play isn't as good as Ghost Recon. Alot of people are bitching about it in the UBI forums.

Hmmm, I don't know if I should even bring this up, lest I earn the eternal hatred of y'all, but I've got a sweet setup here in Italy.
I have fiber running into my apartment, and a 10MB internet connection. That's right, 10 meg connection. I don't know how I'm going to be able to go back to DSL or Cable when I return to the US. Don't hate me because I've got a super fat pipe ![]()

Comes with my job. My office is five feet away from my apartment. I can wake up at 9:50 am and roll into my office. My boss calls, it's all good. I can take an hour nap during lunch everyday, no problem. My commute home from work is all of 10 seconds, which gives me loads of extra time. And I get a free T1 connection. Tons of other perks (free cable w/ HBO, phone, etc.), but those are among the better ones. -Anxiety
