It really makes me sick how quick ESPN tries to defend Kobe by reporting all the "dirt" on the teenage girl. They just reported that there was an incident at UNCo where she was taken to the hospital in an ambulence when it was determined that she was "a danger to herself." I saw that on a Google search saying 6 minutes ago - so ESPN is all over it.
I didn't hear ESPN reporting that one of the teenager's friend had said that there was still visible physical injuries a week after the alleged incident and that the girl had to cover the injuries with cosmetics. I wonder why not. Unless you and Kobe are "boys", hanging out and paling around town, you DON'T know him. He has already validated that. He has already at least been dishonest once, so why would I be so quick to believe him when he says, "I'm innocent."? I will wait and see. I always had a funny feeling about that guy and I certainly don't know him. ![]()

I've been thinking the same thing, and another comment I made was "I'm sure Dotson will get the same 'innocent until proven guilty' treatment from the media as Kobe.' But of course, Dotson was practially called guilty before he was even charged, and there was even less real evidence that Dotson committed a crime than there was that Kobe did.
Though ESPN is also reporting that Kobe bought his wife a 4 million dollar ring recently. Just the kind of thing to say 'I'm sorry for having sex with(or raping) another woman.' |

I read an article today that five or six people confirmed that the girl was bragging and joking about Kobe's anatomy a few days after the incident.
If it's true that certainly doesn't sound like someone who was just raped...

His wife is a fool to stay with Kobe even if he is telling the truth. I doubt there is a Judge out there who would try to stop the divorce suit based only on Kobe's story.

Yeah - a woman that has had sex before can still be raped.

It pisses me off when the media releases all this dirt on the peoples lives. It's non of my damn buisness how many times she tried to kill her self! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CASE, so why report it?
If they are going to report about the case, than they should report info relevant to the case, not dirt about her past. |

I guess this could help Kobe's defense. Unless this goes to show she was emotionally in a state of mind where it would be easier for Kobe to take advantage of her to get her into a situation where he could have non-consenual sex with her. Either way. Not that I think any of that will matter. As soon as Noop testifies that she was just a bitch after money, the jury will have no choice but to find him not-guilty. When I posted the article from the Denver Post a couple of days ago, the goal was not to have it end up in the discussion that it seemed to spark. (I'm leaning on not even responding to the thread as I don't have the energy or patience to respond to some of the comments at the moment)
The point was that while some "friends" are saying one thing, there are other sides. (I use the term friends loosely, my friends wouldn't be speaking to the media about how wacko I was) The point was we do not know who is right yet and the one sided information coming out about her is pretty sad IMO. Lets say she was a psycho slut. As has been said above, that doesn't mean she couldn't have been raped. If your sister was going through some mental problems and accused someone of rape, would you instantly side with the accused rapist because of her history? If you were objective in anyway, you would certainly entertain the possibility she may have embelished. Now lets say she had bruises on her arms, maybe one on her face. How would you react then? Well, we don't know whether the guy saying she has visible injuries is telling the truth. We also don't know for certain the suicide attempts or the "slut" information coming out. Nor do we know how credible her making comments about framing Kobe are true either. (If it is, she's gotta be one of the dumbest criminals in the history of this planet. Tell a huge gathering of people your plans, execute those plans, and think somehow nobody would talk? Yikes) It's funny how ESPN and all of the other major news outlets have reported these stories from these "friends" of the girls, but skips the one which would make Kobe look bad. No, not funny, sad. What friends?
At least ESPN is learning from their mistakes. Remember the first negative interview ESPN did at the gas station. The girl talked about the victim and how much of a slut she was and how she was just in it for the money. It turned out that she was still in school and would of been a freshman when the victim was a Senior. 2 co-cheerleaders that graduated with the victim on the Lary King show said they did not even know the girl. ESPN change ---Hide the names of the reported friends. And, just show up with a ton of cash and "Pay" people off the street to trash the victim. I could get some great stories about "Insert Name Here" if I just picked a school at random and started throwing cash around. Why are they not quoting their sources? If you read forums enough you quickly come to the conclusion that if there is "no link" attached the poster is usually just a Bull-Shit artist. And , generally the same can be said for print articles. The Enquirer is famous for their "Unidentified" Sources.

Personally, I don't think taht this is a sports story at all. It's embarassing how much play it gets in sports news. But, it's a legal issue with an athelete - not sports.

Rape shield laws are in place to make sure that an alleged rape victim's past sexual history is inadmissible in a trial, because anyone can be raped, regardless of how many or few times that person has had sex. Rape can occur to a prostitute, a virgin, even the wife of the accuser (which has happened). However, her mental state and possible drug use are certainly relevant, if they are not too remote in time to the incident, as to her ability to both perceive reality and to tell the truth. That's fair game for the defense. if she was in a depressed state and tried to kill herself shortly before the incident, then the jury should know that when assessing whether she accurately portrayed the facts the night of the incident. She might not even be outright lying, if she was in such a depressed state that she just perceived things from that altered mindset. It also goes to her credibility/reputation in the community which, based on some complicated rules of evidence, can be attacked in certain situations. Her past "bad" acts, especially those that never led to criminal charges, are generally inadmissible, unless the prosecution is not careful and allows it be an issue.

DOLA AMIGOS!
If ever a Gag Order was needed in a case, this is the one.. Good to see one has been put in place. By the way, anyone got the odds in Vegas on the Disney Corp. buying CourtTV before this trial begins? I think the folks at ESPN are begging the Corporate Execs as we speak. Or shall I say, ESPN - The Kobe Licking Network.

Well gee, E$PN's coverage may not have anything to do with the fact that they shelled out an excessive amount of cash for the rights to the NBA, and now they're trying to protect them, would it? No, we all know the national media always puts the truth before the almighty dollar...

Noop, it's not the point that she's looking for money, but the way you made it seemed. What if she really was raped? You are taking the ESPN side which makes Kobe to be a Saint, which we don't know what's going on

Its interesting that ESPN is now seen as the Kobe-love channel. When this all started the main reporter was Shelly Smith who is from Colorado and referred to the alleged victim as "One of our own" on numerous occasions. I believe she was removed from reporting on this, so maybe ESPN has changed their attitude to protect their product.

I only hope, that if Kobe Bryant does end up being found guilty of these charges, that ESPN somehow is publicly reprimanded and possibly even found guilty of some sort of crime due to their obvious slanted reporting of this whole matter. Maybe the girl can go after the Disney Corporation in a civil suit. How's that for advertising Disney? Schmucks. In a matter of what, 20-25 years or so, ESPN has gone from a small company that only wanted to bring sports coverage to the avid sportsfan 24 hours a day to one that now actually seems to want to control sports in America as a whole and is very slowly, piece by piece, attempting to do so. Just check out their coverage on darn near anything over the past couple of years.. They want to be part of, or in some cases even play the main role in, the stories they cover. And now, with this obvious pro-Kobe Bandwagon they're attempting to form, they've taken things to the next level.. What's next? ESPN Condemns the Death Penalty? ESPN Demands O.J. be Sent to Prison?

The coverage is horrid. Frankly, regardless of whether Kobe is guilty or not, the shit that's been reported in the media about the girl is out of bounds. If this girl actually has been raped, then she's getting raped daily by this coverage as well.

Kobe's image has been built up by the media, and it's helped to sell the product. The owner of ESPN owns the rights to the NBA Finals, which will certainly be higher if a team from LA is in the Finals. The Clippers obviously won't make it, and the Lakers have no chance without Kobe. ESPN seems more interested in protecting how much they invested in building this image, an image Kobe also needs to help out in his defense.
I'm not saying that Kobe is innocent or guilty, but it seems kind of pathetic when that's what they're most interested in. |

Oh, if anyone wanted a sample of this "objective" reporting, here it is:
"Hammer No. 3 belongs to the alleged vic, herself. If she doesn't keep on hitting herself on the toes with it by yapping away at parties, she can knock down a lot, and already has. There is the matter of compensation, from any pending civil action (or settlement) in the wake of the criminal case. There is also notoriety. Hey, the cynical and even the pragmatic say that it doesn't matter how, as long as they get the name right. She wanted to be on "American Idol"? Well, she got it." |

To tell the truth, I haven't followed any of the media coverage of this case. Simply working as an intern at a local station three years ago, I learned enough to know that I'd rather not watch this type of thing.
With that said, let's not be naive here. You do all realize that the whole purpose of ESPN and ALL commercial networks is to make money, right? How many of you are watching to see what ESPN's reporters say next? They're getting you to watch. That's what all commercial television is about. "Objective reporting" doesn't get ratings. A large group of people here may want objectivity, but I would bet that most of the viewing public does not. They want dirt, and they're getting it. No, you don't have to like what ESPN is doing, but at least try to understand it. News producers DO think that most viewers are mindless drones, and for the most part, their suspicions are correct. Many people at FOFC may feel that their intelligence is being insulted, but it almost goes without saying that FOFC is far from representative of the average American media consumer. If I keep this up, I may be able to put my damn communications degree to use for once.

I agree 100%. Again, the point of me posting the article a couple of days ago was simply to show another side. To show that just because we've seen how some "friends" are portraying her, that others have a much different view. I'm hoping she made it up. It'd be great if that were the case. Granted, there could be no winners, but the violent act she's saying took place wouldn't have happened either. I just think the media has been very one sided in this. If they choose to attack the girl's character, they should also report the stories that do not make her out to be an Anti-Christ. Noop, Your comments that I've read on this case have been horrible. Your age is the only reason I cut you any slack. Your assumption that all men would cheat on their wives if they had the chance is a disgusting one. Your overall respect for women in your posts has been shameful. I don't think you're the board a$$ hole. I do hope that you address your issues and change your beliefs as you get older. It'd be a shame for you to become a husband and father and lose it all because you couldn't prevent yourself from nailing some cute office slut who hit on you. It'd also be a shame for your wife to have to deal with that. I don't profess to know what Kobe did or didn't do. I refuse to simply lable the girl a money grubbing slut because I knew a girl who was like that once. I refuse to say she made it up because others have. You have every right to your opinion(s). The rest of the board has every right to call you out on them. TroyF |

Troy My age should have nothing to do with anything I'm not stupid so why cut me slack me. Something like this has already happen to someone in my fam, and like everyone hear I was angry my family member would ever do that. Until it went to trial where I found out she has a history of calling rape but just settled out of court. She drives two nice cars and has a very nice house, but she doesn't work. How'd she get all these nice things from the court settlement from the second time it happen, the guy settled because his wife left him and he didnt want to bother with the case. When that same guy testified in court for my family member on trial, he basically said she was the one who invited him to her room and that everything was consesual. And there was the first guy to who she accused of raping her, who is now serving jail time. He said the same thing as the second guy...my family member was saying the same thing the whole time she let me in the house. Now given fact she was "raped" three times all so called raped happen when she had fell into serious debt. What does that tell you about her? You can blast for my views all you want your entitled to do that its your right. But never use my age to explain why I did something or start calling me names like your the little kid. As for the thing I posted on the other thread I said sorry although you all took it out of context. Just cause one elite said something about all elites had to take their jabs. Now its early in the morning and I'm to tired or lazy to edit and proofread. noop

Noop, People with some life xperience are smart enough to realize that just because ONE girl cried rape for money, it doesn't mean all of them have done that. The girl who did that to your family member is exactly what you think she is. (I'll assume everything you say on the matter is true) That doesn't mean Kobe's accuser is the same type of person. It doesn't mean that celebrities or big shots don't rape people. There was one person who ever tried to get me to take cocaine in my life. It was a teammate from my basketball team. A black teammate. Do I now assume ALL black basketball players use cocaine? Your assumption that just because it happened to your family that it CERTAINLY happened to Kobe is a very immature response. It's also a harmful one. Your assertion that all men would cheat on their wives if the chance arose is another horrific stereotype. It's also one that will have horrible consequences for the person who happens to fall in love with you. Try explaining that ALL guys would have done it when your wife is holding your child with tears in her eyes. So what it comes down to is that I either think you're VERY stupid and get VERY offended by your comments, or I look at the overall picture and take into account you have very little life experience. I choose to take the latter point of view. Maybe I'm wrong and you are very mature for your age. If that's the case, I pray for everyone you come into contact with. You are going to hurt a lot of people in your life. TroyF |

And I still think she's doing for the money... is every girl who gets raped reporting it for the money? No... Could Kobe be guilty yes... will she take him to civil court? If i was a lawyer I could say so...Will you all still keep taking jabs at me? Yes...Why because you all are the best shit since slice bread. So what's the moral I've learned don't argue with people on the internet. I rest my case...Oh if this topic comes up please don't say my name. noop
