ESPN Insider

ESPN Insider is free this weekend.

I have never paid for it, but did follow sportsrumors.com before ESPN.com bought them. After reading what is available on the Insider site the past 2 days, I wonder why anyone pays for it.

The site doesnt appear to offer information that isnt available in their ESPN chats or other sporting websites. I know the topic has come up before with people who pay for Insider and with those who dont, but what is available other than Mel Kiper that is worth paying for?

I like when a baseball trade happens, and then the next day, right below that transaction on ESPN, there'll be an Insider link speculating on where that player may end up (as in, Insider ain't exactly "up to date")

Well, I did subscribe to "Insider" this year and maybe it was just a one time thing but they added a year's subscription to ESPN Mag. with it after we had been members for a month or so. I get the feeling it is like alot of things, sometimes good other times not so good. It was only like $30 or so for the year so not a huge chunk of change.

The one nice thing about Insider is that it puts most of the news for teams in a league in one place, so if you want to find out some info about a couple teams, you don't have to search all over the internet for it. However, it doesn't really give you too many 'scoops' that you couldn't find anywhere else, and if you are really only interested in getting info about a couple teams, such as the ones you cheer for, its really not worth it.

Boy...the Mel Kiper section is definitely breaking news.

A brand new chat from April 23rd, and his draft big board featuring the likes of Carson Palmer and Charlie Rogers. Sweet.

Is anyone with Insider willing to share the new Milton Bradley article with me? I know it's cheap but I just want to read the one article.

i just signed up free for 30 days about a week ago just for the draft stuff. there is a lot of otherwise restriced info on the players in the draft pool, and the mel kipe stuff (which is completely up to date, so i don't know what swaggs is talking about).

Look at the date on Swaggs post.

I usually get a 30 day free trial in the days leading up to the NBA draft to get Chad Ford's coverage of the foreign players, but after finding sites like www.draftcity.com I don't really have the need this year.

I've been doing fantasy sports on ESPN for the past 6 or 7 years so the Insider has always been free for me as well. I don't mind it...it has a few nice features but I certainly don't find much ground breaking news in it. So I know I wouldn't be paying the sign-up fee for it if I wasn't into fantasy sports.

Chad Ford's NBA Insider alone is worth the annual subscription rate...

It's excellent. I like the Insider. Well woth the dough. I mainly like having all the local team headlines on one page. Excellent for play-offs, so you can read about the series through the enemy's eyes without having to try and figure out what the hell newspapers to look at it.

I read Ford religiously.

What I think is worth the sub rate is the ESPN Local, links to local newspaper coverage of all professional sports teams. This information advantage can be invaluable in fantasy leagues.

One of my best friends edits most of the stuff on Insider (Ford, Lunardi, ect). You would fall out of your chair if you knew how many idiots plunk down $5 a month.

I found out that I'm able to snag a six month subscription at a discounted rate through work, and it even comes with a coupon for 20% off any PC games.

So, y'know, I've been trying it out. Not sure yet if I'm going to continue, mostly because what I was after was MLB Insider and the Rumor Central - which, as someone pointed out, is often out of date.

I signed up for a long time ago, cancelled it and they wouldn't stop charging my card. So, I finally switched it to debit card to an account I closed a long time ago, 'cuz they won't get anything off that...and they're still sending me ESPN the magazine, with emails saying "we're cancelling your account because we can't charge your card".

If they'd listened when I told them that, they'd realize it.

But oh well..

Heh, it's the opposite for me. I singed up about seven years ago or so on a credit card that I cancelled probably five years ago. And even though they can't charge me since that account doesn't exist anymore, I still have access to Insider. I love it...

So, in other words, Dark Cloud is paying for your subscription

Thanks for calling me an idiot.

$39.95 a year with ESPN magazine (granted, the magazine isn't worth much - but its a good way to kill 15-20 minutes here and there). The Local coverage is worth the 3.33 it costs me a month.

hehe..no, I'm not paying anymore since I moved the subscription to a debit card linked to an account that's closed. They keep sending me ESPN the magazine though and send me emails saying "We're having problems processing your card". Well no doh.

Some other poor shlop is paying for both of us to get the magazine, probably.
