Wingbacks Effect on Midfield

Using Supporter stats, I did a little study...

Here are my top midfield ratings, with the percentages, followed by my strategy.

1. Purple Pirates - Oh Buddha (100%)

I played both wingbacks at normal. Neither were very good and got me *1/2 ratings. I played a winger towards the middle who got a single *. I played a winger defensive (I didn't know then) and a middie offensive. My middies got **1/2, **, and **. Midfield rating was weak.

2. goonz - Purple Pirates (86%)

I played everyone normal, including my wingbacks. My midfielders got **, *1/2, and * ratings. My wingbacks got *1/2 and *. Middies got **1/2, **, and *. Midfield rating was weak.

3. Purple Pirates - real (86%)

I played both wingbacks normal, one got *1/2 and the other a lowly 1/2*. I had one middie defensive and the others normal. One winger offensive, the other normal. Midfield rating was weak.

4. Virginia Beach Sun Kings - Purple Pirates (83%)

This is my just completed match. I played both wingbacks defensive and one winger towards the middle. All middies were set at normal. Middies got **1/2, **1/2, and ** ratings. Both wingbacks got ** ratings. Midfield rating was poor.

5. Lockwood United - Purple Pirates (80%)

This one I only played one wingback as I pulled the other for extra midfielder and kept two Central D's. I played a winger (**) towards the middle, a winger (*1/2) defensive, and three middies at normal. The middies got **, *, and ** ratings. Midfield rating was poor.

6. Purple Pirates - Texas Babylonians (77%)

This was my relegation match. I played most of this one with a man down after a first half red card. I set one wingback defensive and the other one normal. My middies were set at normal and got ** and ** ratings,, and my normal wingback got ** as well. Midfield rating was poor.

7. Purple Pirates - Virginia Beach Sun Kings (74%)

I played one wingback normal and one defensive. The normal wingback got a ** rating. I played a winger towards the middle who got *1/2. My three middies were set at normal and got **, *1/2, and *1/2. Midfield rating was poor.

8. Purple Pirates - Montg. United (70%)

I played one wingback normal and the other defensive. I had a winger towards the middle with a ** rating. My middies were set at normal with ratings of **, **, and *1/2. Midfield rating was poor.

I have 7 other games, but this should be enough. One thing to note. I have only played a 3-5-2 with both wingbacks normal three times. All three times I got a weak midfield rating. I haven't been able to get a weak midfield since. The relegation match was a MOTS and 23% worse than my best midfield game, which was played normal.

Any thoughts?

Wingbacks have a very small effect on the midfield if played offensive. Otherwise there is no effect at all. However in the rules jusy say "an ounce of playmaking" so I assume the contribution is miniscule.

I think there was a thread about this in the conferences a few months ago, but I can't remember exactly where...
