Shockey calls Parcells a "homo"

Shockey Rips Parcells

It's just a matter of time before this guy self-destructs. He's the John Rocker of the NFL.

Yes but he's one heck of a coach.

Not so sure about Shockey, though.

Why is this news? Is there any guy in America who hasn't called another guy a homo for doing something he perceives as silly, stupid, annoying?

That is not to say that it's right to do so -- in fact, I'll acknowledge that it's terribly politically incorrect to do so, and unnecessarily extends the shelf-life of harmful prejudices -- but it happens. We've all done it. We all still do it sometimes, and the jackass who decided to report it should have been able to predict what the politically correct public reaction would have been and pulled it out of the story. That he left it in leads me to believe that this was a journalist with an agenda -- that agenda being "I want to do a story on what a bigoted, loudmouthed jerk Shockey is". There's no good reason from a journalistic perspective to leave the words The homo in that piece unless you specifically wanted that slant.

If Shockey had gone off on a screed about homosexuality, that would have been another thing entirely. In this case, however, he's just using a generally accepted guy shorthand term for a dick, but probably didn't want to use language that strong in an interview.

Funny thing is, there wouldn't be this much hype if he HAD called him a dick.

Drake,

I might have more sympathy for Shockey if this were his first problem. This is a guy who took a lot of crap last year for making what many perceived as anti-gay comments. He should have learned at that point to be more careful.

I'll say the same thing now that I said a year ago. . . Jeremy Shockey has every right to make his feelings known. I have every right to think the person saying those comments is an idiot.

He's a talented football player (although I don't think he's the revolutionary player many think he is) He keeps making comments like this, he'll keep getting ripped apart for it.

Shocking news - football players make disparing re-marks about gays!!!

Why the hell would some gay guy care what Jeremy Shockey thinks - he is a dumb jock.

Shockey is a moron anyway - he is a good player - but hasn't accomplished 10% of what Parcells has.

all-in-all this is a new millenium story - that is way too much media looking for scandal at every turn.

And as someone mentioned above, you've got to wonder if this interview was done with the express intent of having this guy say something like this. Not that Shockey isn't a big boy and can't watch what he says, but I wonder what the true motivation for the story was.

Eh, I'm not saying I have any sympathy for him, Troy. I think Shockey is a bigoted, loudmouthed jerk who deserves whatever grief he gets.

I just wanted to point out that this seems to me to be an example of the media perpetuating a particular presentation of an individual because it will sell copy. What offends me is that this amounts to the journalist in question choosing to insert his spin on Shockey into the article. Shockey's two word comment was a throwaway line. It was a stand-in for a whole other set of male insult signals that have nothing to do with Shockey's anti-homosexual feelings. I'd bet that 95% of the people who read that article understand that, and wouldn't even have noticed it if the media hadn't made it a big deal.

The journalist in question should have recognized this would happen. Because he chose to leave it in when the outcome was predictable says to me that he's capitalizing on the expected outcome. He is, in fact, attempting to manipulate it. He's not so much giving us a story as he's giving us spin. I object to that. I think it's unprofessional.

I'm a homo, you're a homo, wouldn't ya like to be a homo too?
(just imagine that to the old Dr Pepper jingle)

I love the fact now Shockey is completely denying he ever said it and claiming it was someone else who said it. The reporter is sticking to his guns and saying Shockey just went on a rant and ended it with the homo quote. Shockey outta be a man and just stand up say, "Yeah, I called him that. So what?" Weasel.

If this guy isn't in New York, it's not news. If it's some Bears player saying it about a Packer, no one cares.

Well, I think Shockey being in New York makes it a bigger story, but I think anybody calling Bill Parcells a "homo" regardless of location is a story.

But who other than 8-year-olds calls anybody a "homo?" Someone with the IQ and personality of an 8-year-old is usual the answer.

The guys entitled to his opinion. Just because he is a public figure, it doesn't mean he should be restricted to what he says. There is too much political correct BS anyways, you need a guy like this that speaks his mind.

He was stupid for what he said, I mean he only caught 2 touchdowns last year and he already thinks hes better then Parcells. As for the homo thing, that doesn't matter, who hasn't called someone a homo before? I think the hype is just a little too much for guys like Shockey and Vick. They haven't done much and they are already hyped up into the next greatest thing.

And then Troy Vincent, who I used to like as a player, displays this nugget, "...I don't think he means anything by it disrespectfully...", as if people routinely call each other a homo and it is all in good fun. If it wasn't meant as a dis, why was it said?

You no longer like him because of that quote?

I think the word 'overreaction' best describes all this with Shockey.

My contention is that homosexuality is the current #1 PC thing, and even a black person can't get avoid the PC police when it comes to homosexual issues.

Yes, and White even said worse things about ethnic groups, but he wasn't even raked over the coals.

That's my point exactly. Being black, Reggie (and Dusty) got away with inappropriate ethnic comments, but even Reggie White wasn't exempt from the P.C. police with regards to calling homosexual behavior sinful.

I wasn't a real big fan of Shockey before this. He's like Randy Moss to me. . . he's a great player to watch PLAY, everything else he does disgusts me. Catching a five yard pass and celebrate like he's some sort of living God? Spend more time trying to run over a 49er instead of just scoring the TD in a playoff game? (that might be a good reason as to why he only caught 2 TD's the entire year)

I'll pass. He's a great football player who will only get better. Having said that, I hope Roy Williams flattens him when the Giants play the Cowboys. It'd be a case of one of my favorite, classy players laying out a guy I don't like. It'd be the Cowboys making a good play which would suck, but I think I could find a way to live with it.

If I recall, most of his endorsement contracts were allowed to expire and not renewed, the Packers and the NFL reprimanded and fined him, and one of the networks that was about to hire him as a sports commentator decided not to do so.

Parcells is gay.. thats why they call him the tuna. He's a trans-gendered football genius.

There is no possible way I could disagree with this comment more. It goes back to the Dixie Chicks. I don't have to respect them at all. Not even a little bit.

What I have to respect is their right to say what they say. (which I do 100%)

SkyDog, I agree with you but I compare to Mr. White's comments to Rocker's and look who got (still) the worse treatment. In my mind, calling someone a homo is not being homophobic (fear of homosexuals) the media sticks on things when they have no idea what they are talking about. Maybe he should have used faggoty instead.

You think you're playing the "Jump to conclusions" game, or something? I never said that had anything to do with it. I never liked him since he left the Dolphins. It has nothing to do with him personally, it's just a football thing.
