Usenet
I haven't used Usenet in so long, mainly because my ISP never offered me that much to begin with. Now Comcast offers 1 GB a month through Giganews. They have a large list of groups and many are loaded with fresh messages as well as older ones unpurged.
I do have a few favorites (Disney ones, news ones, hobby ones, joke ones, etc.) Any good newsgroups out there for text-based sims? And any other good newsgroups in general for just good natured discussion? |

Unless you're looking for specific titles, the best for sport games discussion is comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.sports.

I should say, the best that I've come across. Just too many newsgroups to be definitive about anything... |

I found that one. Very good. Best thing I've found is to put a keyword in and see if there's a group related to it.
Also, what I've done is used the groups feature in Google, entered a subject, and found some groups that way. This will often give you some ideas about what groups talk about what. I've subscribed to several groups already. It's been so long since I've done this and I've forgotten how cool it was. Reason I stopped posting was because of the spam issues. Way back when, before Spam was an issue, I'd used real e-mail addresses. Now I just put something in like [email protected] and have no problems. ![]() |

alt.fan.cecil-adams used to be pretty fun, but I haven't visited in a very long time.

Any good trivia groups out there? Hmmm ... any groups with stuff like I'm With Stupid and Make Mine Rare?

the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.sports seems to be pretty weak
I have verizon internet, which has excellent newsgroup service. Seems to be only about 10 or so posts on a daily basis there. |

Thanks to Comcast, I get a free subscription to Giganews and special rates to get more bandwidth. It's probably the best ISP news service I've had in a very long time.

You might check out rec.puzzles... which has in the past had a variety of different games, including the "Make Mine Rare" game a long time ago. I don't know if they still do that sort of stuff, but it's worth a look, at least. |

Usenet is Internet newsgroups. They predate the World Wide Web, harkening back to the text-based era of the Internet. What's fun is going to a Usenet archive and finding posts from the 80s. Oh how times have changed. I remember first getting onto the Internet. Let me see there was Gopher instead of HTML, newsgroups, chat, and a clunky mail system. And everything was done in a shell client (telnet -- into a Unix system). That was my first dial-up. 14.4 I believe, at a whopping $40 a month. But it was fun. |
