Worst Team in NFL History Tournament

Now that whatifsports offers NFL teams back to 1960, I thought I'd do a little dynasty inspired by the recent NY Yankees Dynasty (I'm sure there have been others too).

I've picked the worst 32 teams in NFL history and seeded them for single elimination tournament. The catch is that the losing team advances and the winning team gets eliminated. Whoever advanced to the end will be deemed the worst team in NFL history. Well, since 1960 at least.

Here are the 32 teams, listed from the top seed to the #32 seed.

1976 Buccaneers 0-14-0
1960 Cowboys 0-11-1
1982 Colts 0-8-1
2001 Panthers 1-15-0
2000 Chargers 1-15-0
1996 Jets 1-15-0
1991 Colts 1-15-0
1990 Patriots 1-15-0
1989 Cowboys 1-15-0
1980 Saints 1-15-0
1973 Oilers 1-13-0
1971 Bills 1-13-0
1969 Steelers 1-13-0
1968 Bills 1-12-1
1967 Falcons 1-12-1
1966 Giants 1-12-1
1962 Raiders 1-13-0
1961 Redskins 1-12-1
2002 Bengals 2-14-0
1999 Browns 2-14-0
1994 Oilers 2-14-0
1986 Buccaneers 2-14-0
1985 Bills 2-14-0
1983 Oilers 2-14-0
1981 Colts 2-14-0
1979 Lions 2-14-0
1978 49ers 2-14-0
1977 Chiefs 2-12-0
1975 Saints 2-12-0
1974 Colts 2-12-0
1970 Patriots 2-12-0
1965 Steelers 2-12-0

I will use the same format that hattrick uses and re-seed after every round.

We are playing all these games at the Orange Bowl, the best option for a neutral site since no Dolphins squads were bad enough (though some came close) to make the tournament.

Round 1

1965 Steelers vs. 1976 Buccaneers

1965 Steelers: The Steelers started off 0-5 before managing upsets against The Cowboys and Eagles in back to back weeks. Those would be their only wins this season. They lost rubber matches against both teams, including an embarassing 47-13 loss to the Eagles. There were no stars (at least that I recognize) on this squad. A porous pas defense was probably their biggest undoing. Opponents threw 35 TD passes and were only intercepted 12 times. That's a pretty pathetic number for the pre-rules change era. They were coached by Mike Nixon, who would not return for the team in 1966.

Top Stars
WR Gary Ballman 40-859-21.5-5
P Frank Lambert 78-45.1
CB Jim Bradshaw 5 INT's

1976 Buccaneers: The Buccaneers have had many awful squads, but this is the favorite to be named worst NFL team. They were shutout three times in their first five games and two more times the rest of the season. They only managed a couple of close contests, including a 13-10 loss to fellow expansion team Seahawks, and a 23-20 nailbiter against the Dolphins. Steve Spurrier, in his final NFL season, led the Bucs to only 125 points on the season. Meanwhile they gave up 412 points and allowed 2,560 rushing yards. Coach John McKay was retained and actually led the franchise to the conference finals 4 years later. They also made two more playoff appearances in the early 80s but the bottom fell out in 83 and 84.

Top Stars
QB Steve Spurrier 156-311-50.2-1628-7-12
RB Louis Carter 171-521-3.1-1 20-135-6.8-0
DE Lee Roy Selmon

The steelers took the kickoff and easily moved into Tampa bay territory but a FG attempt was blocked. Neither offense can move the ball on the next couple series. With 5:45 left in the quarter, the Bucs take over at their own 4 yard line. spurrier gets hot and connects on three passes for 61 yards and sets up Louis Carter for a 2 yard TD run for a 7-0 lead. Early int he 2nd quarter, Tampa strikes again when Spurrier finds WE John McKay wide open for an 80 yard TD pass. The Bucs continued to dominate as they scored on an 8 yard TD runlate in the 2nd quarter for a 21-0 lead. Wahtever chances the ASteelers had were dashed when Spurrier opened the 2nd half with a smooth 10 play drive ending in a 16 yard TD pass to McKay. Bucs went ahead 28-0 and rolled for a surprisingly easy 34-3 victory. The Steelers will advance to the next round.

For Tampa Bay, Louis Carter ran for 140 yards, McKay had 125 yards and two TD's, and Spurrier was very efficient with a 17-25-289-2-0 showing. The only notable Steeler was WR Gary Ballman who caught 8 passes for 117 yards.

no matter how long we've been bad, we've rarely been the worst team in a given season and by looking at this list I'm glad to say we're not even close to the worst team in history!!!

Interesting story...

This Frank Lambert is now a history prof and teaches at Purdue. I had the previledge of taking one of his classes (he's pretty good as history profs go) -- I'll post a link in a minute.

Here ya go: Linky linky

1970 Patriots vs. 1960 Cowboys

1970 Patriots: The Pats opened the season with a 27-14 upset over the Dolphins in Don Shula's Miami debut. They then lost their next 9 games and floundered to a 2-12 finish, while the Dolphins rolled to a 10-4 record and their first division title. Joe Kapp and Mike Taliaferro split the QB duties on the season and neither one had a pretty season. They combined for 7 TD's and 28 INT's. The defense allowed 25.8 points per game and could only manage 8 interceptions against their opponents. Head Coach Clive Rush would not return the following year.

Top Stars

RB Jim Nance 145-522-3.6-7, 26-148-5.7-0
WR Ron Sellers 38-550-14.5-4
WR Bake Turner 28-428-15.3-2

1960 Cowboys:

Hall of Fame head coach Tom Landry led the Cowboys to a surprising tie against the Giants in week 11. This was one of the few positive things to happen in the season as they were already 0-10 at that point. They allowed 30.8 points per game, but the offense could have been worse. Under the direction of QB Eddie LeBaron, they struggled to 14.8 points per game but they did put up 31 in that tie against the Giants. Of course, Landry stayed around for a long time and midway through the 60s you could see the improvement. Don Meredith (a backup this season) became a consistently reliable starter through most of the 60s until Craig Morton was ready to take over.

Top Stars
QB Eddie LeBaron 111-225-49.3-1736-12-25
WR Jim Doran 31-554-17.9-3
WR Frank Clarke 9-290-32.2-3

After a quick three and out by the Cowboys, Pats QB Joe Kapp wasted no time putting his team on the board with 4 completions, all to WR Ron Sellers, the last one being a 15 yard TD for a 7-0 lead. Dallas could only manage one first down, but the defense came up big on the next series when they blocked a Pats FG. LeBaron took over and easily moved his team to a TD on a 13 yard pass to Jim Doran. Joe Kapp continued to be sharp as he led the PAts to another TD early int he 2nd quarter on a 7 yard pass to Bake Sellers. There would be no more scoring until early in the 4th quarter, when they intercept a Mike Taliaferro pass andreturn it 23 yards for the TD and a 14-14 tie score. The Pats put Kapp back in and he led them to a FG with 10:31 left. On the very next play from scrimmage, Cowboys RB Don McIlhenny fumbled the ball on his own 20. The play after that, Ron Sellers was dancing in the end zone after catching Joe Kapp's 20 yard pass. Dallas's inept offense was unable to threaten the rest of the way and the Pats won 24-14. The Cowboys will advance to round 2.

Notable Stats:

QB Joe Kapp 18-25-247-2-0
WR Ron Sellers 15-228-2
WR Bake Turner 7-92-1

QB Eddie LeBaron 14-25-195-1-0
WR Billy Howton 5-74-0
WR Fred Dugan 5-63-0

I'm surprised the Packers didn't make the list at all. If I can recall correctly, they had some pretty terrible teams in the mid to late 80's. Fun idea though.

Thanks for the interest guys.

in response to the questions about certain teams:

Three wins disqualified any team from making this list. As bad as the Bengals have been, 2002 was the only time they won less than three games. Since 1960, the Packers haven't even lost less than four games.

Here is the third game of Round 1 and it is a matchup of two teams from the same franchise and I'm sure the franchise would like to forget about both of them.

1982 Colts at 1974 Colts

82 Colts

The 82 Colts went winless in the strike shortened season, but they did manage a tie against Bart Starr's Packers (who made the playoffs) and came close to upsetting the eventual Superbowl runner-up Dolphins. The anemic offense led by Mike Pagel could only manage 12.6 points a game, while the defense allowed 26.2 pts per game and allowed a combined 97.3 passer rating from opposing QB's. Head Coach Frank Kush managed to keep his job and led the Colts to 7 wins the following season, but was let go after another dropoff to 4-12.

Top Stars

QB Mike Pagel 111-221-50.2-1281-5-7
RB Zachary Dixon 58-249-4.3-1, 20-185-9.3-0
P Rohn Stark 46-44.4

74 Colts

The 74 Colts were led by Howard Schnellenberger, who would later go on to lead the Miami Hurricanes to their first national title. His tenure with the Colts wasn't nearly as memorable, as he compiled a 6-22 record. The offense was the real weakness of this team. The defense held opponents to 3.8 yards per carry and only 16 TD passes on the season. Unfortunately the offense scored 10 or fewer pts 6 times on the season and averaged only 13.6 pts per game. RB Lydell Mitchell was one of the few bright spots as he gained 1301 total yards and scored 7 TD's.

Top Stars

RB Lydell Mitchell 214-757-3.5-5, 72-544-7.6-2
QB Bert Jones 143-270-53.0-1610-8-12
MLB Mike Curtis 3 INT's

The 74 Colts took advantage of a good punt return and a couple first downs to get into field goal position for a 3-0 lead. The offenses stalled at this point, but a big defensive play breathed some life into the game. Cliff Odom intercepted Bert Jones pass at the 17 yard lineand returned it to the 11. One play later, the 82 Colts took a 7-3 lead on an 11 yard TD pass by Mike Pagel. Bert Jones shook it off and completed 4 consecutive passes on a 5 play, 82 yard TD drive that took less than 2 minutes and gave the 74 Colts a 10-7 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Marty Domres came in for a shook up Bert Jones early in the 2nd quarter and promptly threwq an INT that set up a FG by the 82 Colts to tie the game 10-10. Bert Jones came back into the game but could not manage a first down. Pagel led his team on an 8 play drive that resulted in another FG to give his team a 13-10 lead with 1:45 left. Bert Jones came back with a strong drive of his own and the 74 Colts connected on a 40 yd FG as the half expired to tie the game 13-13.

Bert Jones continued to play like he rarely did in 1974 and led the 74 Colts to another TD on the opening drive of the 2nd half. Pagel came back and led the 82 Colts to a FG on the ensuing drive. The score was now 20-16 in favor of the 74 Colts. The defenses stepped it up now and there would be no more scoring for the rest of the half until the 74 Colts ices the game on 6 yard run by Glenn Doughty for a 27-16 lead. Pagel managed a late TD and 2 pt conversion with 1:38 left but it was too little, too late. The 74 Colts recovered the onside attempt and won the game 27-24. The 82 Colts stayed winless and advance to the next round.

Notable Stats

QB Bert Jones 20-29-241-2-1
WR Roger Carr 5-94-0
RB Lydell Mitchell 8-39-0, 4-35-0

QB Mike Pagel 22-34-271-2-0
WR Ray Butler 5-85-1
TE Matt Bouza 7-76-0

2001 Panthers at 1975 Saints

2001 Panthers: The Panthers started with a solid 24-13 win in week one. Things were looking great, and Chris Weinke seemed ready to be a full time starter. Then everything came crashing down. The Panthers lost their next 15 games and Weinke struggled to a horrible finish with 10 TD's and 19 INT's. The defense showed some promise by grabbing 24 INT's and we know what would happen a couple years later, but this was a terrible team in 2001.

Top Stars

KR Steve Smith 56-25.6-2
CB Doug Evans 8 INT's
DE Mike Rucker 9 Sacks

1975 Saints: The 75 Saints were an awful team. It's amazing they were even able to win 2 games. They were led by Archie Manning, who had a miserable season with 7 TD's and 20 INT's. There was little running game to speak of and the defense allowed a porous 25.7 points a game. The only positive to think about at the end of the season was the hiring of Hank Stram as the future head coach, but two seasons later that didn't look like a positive either.

Top Stars

RB Mike Strachan 161-668-4.1-2, 30-224-7.5-0
FS Tom Myers 5 INT's
TE Paul Seal 28-414-14.8-1

The Saints were able to move the ball on their first drive but stalled at midfield. Weinke took over and led the Panthers on a 9 play, 76 yard drive ending in a FG for a 3-0 Carolina lead. The Saints came back at the start of the 2nd quarter thanks to an impressive performance from RB Mike Strachan. Strachan has 10 carries for 59 yards on the drive and Manning takes it in from the 4 yard line to give the Saints a 7-3 lead. Carolina stalls again and Manning makes some key completions on the next drive and the Saints take a 14-3 lead. Carolina is unable to threaten for the rest of the half and the score remains 14-3.

The Saints open the half with more strong running from Strachan but come away empty after a missed field goal. Both teams stall until Carolina makes a field goal with 1:02 left in the 3rd quarter. Carolina's defense is finally able to stop Strachan and then the offense manages to put another nice drive together. Weinke takes the team down to the 5 yard line and Huntley runs it in with 6:09 left in the game. The score is now 14-12. Down by 2, Carolina goes for a two point conversion to tie it. Weinke hands it off to Huntley but he is stuffed for no gain. Carolina gets the ball once more with 3:35 left but manage to completely fall apart. Two penalties put them in an impossible 3rd and 27 situation they cannot get out of. Unable to convert on 4th and 18, the ball turns over on downs and the Saints run out the clock for a 14-12 victory.

The Carolina Panthers will advance to the 2nd round.

Notable Stats

Saints

RB Mike Strachan 35-141-1, 3-21-0
QB Archie Manning 14-26-171-1-0, 4-20-1
WR Larry Burton 4-57-0

Panthers

QB Chris Weinke 20-33-236-0-0
WR Donald Hayes 9-90-0
K John Kasay 2-2 FG's

2000 Chargers: Jim Harbaugh and Ryan Leaf split the QB duties in 2001, and one of them was fairly successful. Guess who? Neither of them produced a good record as the Chargers struggled to a 1-15 season. The strongest part of this team was definitely the receiving corps. Jeff Graham, Curtis Conway, and Tight End Freddie Jones all put up respectable numbers. The running game was no help as no one was able to pick up more than 384 yards on the ground. The pass defense was awful, allowing 3786 yards, 33 TD's and only grabbing 16 INT's. The run defense doesnt look so bad on papaer, which is partly due to Junior Seau and also due to opponents running out the clock in the 4th quarter.

Top Stars

WR Jeff Graham 55-907-4
TE Freddie Jones 71-766-5
MLB Junior Seau 3.5 Sacks, 2 INT's

1977 Chiefs: Despite playing several teams very close, the Chiefs were unable to win more than 2 games in 1977. They were led by the very versatile Ed Podola, who gained 800 total yards. The offense could have been worse. They did manage to put up 16 pts a game which is better than many of the other teams in this tournament. On the defensive side, they allowed 24.9 pts a game but allowed opponents to run for an abysmal 4.7 yards per carry. 3 Point and 1 point losses to close the season added to the frustration of this Chiefs team.

Top Stars

RB Ed Podolak 133-550-4.1-5, 32-313-0
TE Walter White 48-674-5
CB Gary Barbaro 8 INT's

It was a very ugly game as neither offense was able to do anything. Running Game was non-existent for both teams and passing games were riddled with incompletions and interceptions. Finally, at the end of the 1st quarter Ryan Leaf begins to move the Chargers on a 79 yard drive. Faced with 3rd and goal from the 4, the Chargers rely on trickery as they give the ball to Curtis Conway on an end around and he takes it in for the TD. The Chargers led 7-0 at this point. Late in the 2nd quarter, The Chiefs were able to move down the field thanks to several San Diego penalties. The drive stalled but Jan Stenerud was able to hit the 23 yard FG to reduce the score to 3-7.

The Chiefs came out strong in the 3rd quarter as they intercept a Ryan Leaf pass and move into field goal position once again. Stenerud hits 28 yarder to make it a one point game at 6-7. On the ensuing drive, Leaf is knocked out of the game. Harbaugh comes in and quickly throws an interception which is returned to the 10 yard line. Podolak then took over on two very key plays. Facing 3rd and goal from the 6 yard line, Chiefs QB Livingston was able to find Podolak for a 6 yard TD to take a 12-7 lead. Them the Chiefs go for two and Podolak takes it in from the 2 yard line to make it a 14-7 lead. Chargers continue to self destruct as Harbaugh throws another interception on the first play of the next drive. The Chiefs return this one to the 16. Eventhough they went three and out, Stenerud hit his 3rd FG of the game to make it a 17-7 lead. Harbaugh leads the Chargers to a TD late int he 4th quarter, but the awful Chargers defense is unable to get the ball back and the Chiefs run the clock out on a 17-14 victory.

Notable Stats:

77 Chiefs

CB Jim Lynch 2 INT's
WR Henry Marshall 4-88-1
K Jan Stenerud 3-3 FG's

00 Chargers

WR Curtis Conway 10-128-0
QB Ryan Leaf 10-16-117-0-1
WR Jeff Graham 5-40-1

1996 Jets vs. 1978 49ers

1996 Jets: Looking at the stats, it's almost inexplicable how the Jets managed to only win one game. But then you look up at Head Coach and see Rich Kotite's name. There was polenty of talent on this team, at least ont he offensive side. Frank Reich and Neil O'Donnell split the QB duties and had subpar seasons, but not quite as bad as others we've seen in this tournament. Adrian Murrell had a productive season running the ball with 1201 yards. Wayne Chrebet, Keyshawn Johnson, and Jeff Graham (making his 2nd appearance in the tournament) were a very productive trio of receivers, combining for 177 catches and 2500 yards. Despite some talent on defense as well, they gave up a ridiculous 28.4 points per game.

Top Stars:

RB Adrian Murrell 301-1249-4.1-6
WR Wayne Chrebet 84-909-10.8-3
Wr Keyshawn Johnson 63-844-13.4-8

1978 49ers: The 49ers made some bad pre-season moves and then endured a horrible run of bad luck. They traded several draft picks for OJ simpson, who was past his prime and new head coach Pete McCulley bizarrely decided to cut Jim Plunkett. Then came the injuries. Three players went out for the season before the 1st game was played. OJ never really recovered from a previous season knee injury and was out for good at midseason. In the final game of the season, the Niners lost both of their quarterbacks, forcing them to use a DB and WR to split time at QB for the rest of the game. The 49ers ended with a 2-12 record.

Top Stars:

CB Eddie Crist 6 INT's
RB OJ Simpson 161-593-3.7-1, 21-172-8.2-2
RB Paul Hofer 121-465-3.8-7, 12-170-14.2-0

1st Half

The 49ers move the ball on their first possession thanks to two nice completions from Steve DeBerg. The drive stalls but Ray Wershing is able to connect on the 46 yd FG for a 3-0 lead. On the next drive, Jets QB Frank Reich is intercepted and San Francisco only needs 5 plays to score a TD on a 4 yard run by Simpson, making the score 10-0. Reich continues to struggle as he is intercepted on the very next play from scrimmage. The 49ers stall but Wershing hits another FG for a 13-0 lead. Reich shrugs off his early struggles and makes a huge lay when he connects with Keyshawn Johnson for a 49 yard TD pass, which closes the gap to 13-7. The 49ers add another field goal in the 2nd quarter to make the score 16-7. Both offenses stalled at this point and there was no more scoring for the rest of this half.

2nd Half

DeBerg has a very nice series to start the 2nd half but the drive stalls after a questionable call on 3rd and 6. Wershign adds yet another field goal for a 19-7 lead. The Jets finally get something going again but a sack stalls the drive and they have to settle for a field goal which closes the gap to 19-10. Early int he 4th quarter, DeBerg gets hot once again as completions of 25, 18, and 21 put the Niners into position for 6 yard TD run by Terrell Fletcher. The score is now 26-10. DeBerg puts the game away after an 80 yard TD pass which makes the score 32-10. The Niners rub it in by converting a 2 pt attempt. Reich throws to late INT's and the Niners add an another TD for a 44-10 win.

Now that I've discovered the WYSIWYG, this dynasty should be more pleasant to read.

1991 Indianapolis Colts at 1979 Detroit Lions
The 1991 Colts were a miserable team that boasted an overrated loudmouth QB in Jeff George and an over the hill hall of fame running back in Eric Dickerson. Despite a decent set of receivers they only managed to score 143 pts over the 16 game season. Compare that to the 1982 Colts squad that went 0-8-1 and they scored almost as many pts with 113 in only 9 games. The defense allowed 20 pts. per game which is lower than most in this tournament, but they received no help on the offensive side.

Top Stars

WR Bill Brooks 72-888-12.3-4
WR Jessie Hester 60-753-12.6-5

The 1979 Lions boasted a fine WR in Freddie Scott, and not much else. Rookie Jeff Kornlo (an 8th round draft pick that year) was inefficient at QB with a 1-2 TD-INT ratio and the running game was adequate at best. The defense was not the worst in the league but they weren't very good either. After posting a 2-14 record they earned the #1 pick in the draft, which they used to get Billy Sims.

Top Stars
WR Freddie Scott 62-929-15.0-5
RB Dexter Bussey 144-625-4.3-1, 15-102-6.8-0

Game Summary:

The Lions completely doinated the Colts for most of the first three quarters. Thanks to a standout performance from WR Freddie Scott, they took a 17-7 lead on two Scott TD receptions. The Colts were able to come back and take the lead in the 4th quarter thanks to a solid day from veteran RB Eric Dickerson. With 1:30 left in the game and trailing 21-17, Lions QB Jeff Komlo was shaken up and had to be replaced at a most critical time. Backup Scott hunter came in and led the Lions to a TD with 53 seconds left. On the next series Jeff George throws two incompletions and is sacked twice as the Lions beat the Colts in a heartbreaker, 24-21.

Round 1, Game 8 - 1990 Patriots at 1981 Colts

The Patriots have won two superbowls in three years but the 1990 edition is long forgotten, and for good reason. After a tough loss to a strong Dolphins squad on opening day and a narrow win over the Colts in week 2, the Patriots stumbled through 14 consecutive losses, including a 42-7 loss against a subpar Jets team in week 15. Marc Wilson was the starting QB for much of the year, but he was "outplayed" by backups Steve Grogan and Tom Hodson. John Stephens and Irving Fryar were the only offensive players that put up respectable numbers, but their 800+ yard seasons were nothing to crow about either.

Top Stars

WR Irving Fryar 54-856-15.9-4
RB John Stephens 212-808-3.8-2

The 1981 Colts won their first and last games of the season, and lost everything in between. The offense wasn't too bad. QB Bert Jones actually had a decent season with 3094 yards and 21 TD's. Curtis Dickey led an efficient group of runners, all averaging over 4.0 yards a carry. What killed the Colts was an anemic defense that allowed 30+ points 10 times and not once did they hold their opponent to less than 23 points. It would even get worse next season.

RB Curtis Dickey 164-779-4.8-7, 37-419-11.3-3

1990 New England Patriots at 1981 Baltimore Colts

A blocked punt and a fumble led to two early TD's for each team in a sloppy 1st quarter. The Colts then began to take over behind the running of Curtis Dickey and Randy McMillan. Three consecutive scores gave the Colts a 19-7 lead in the 2nd quarter but poor red zone and special teams play prevented them from making it into a blowout. Patriots QB Marc Wilson got hot and narrowed the score before the half with a TD pass. In the 3rd quarter Marc Wilson made a huge play with a 73 yard TD pass that gave the Pats the lead 22-19. The Colts came back and pounded their way for another TD to take the lead back in the 4th quarter. The Patriots added a FG but fell one point short when Dickey and company ran out the final 4:32.

Round 1, Game 9 - 1989 Cowboys at 1983 Oilers

1989 Cowboys

89 marked the start of a new era for the Dallas Cowboys. Tom Landry was gone and Jimmy Johnson was plucked fromt he college ranks to take over. In his short time with the Cowboys, he would lead them to two Superbowl titles and gave the fans lots of great memories. None of them happened this year, though, as the cowboys floundered to a 1-15 recored. Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin were on the team at thispoint, but neither did anything notable. The only true standout player was perhaps Jim Jeffcoat who recorded 11.5 sacks.

1983 Oilers

The 83 Oilers squad was not without talented players. RB Earl Campbell is probably the greatest player that's been featured in this tournament yet and he had a decent season with 1301 yards and 12 TD's. WR Tim Smith also made enough plays to rack up 83 receptions and 1176 yards, with 6 TD's. So why did this team go 2-14? For one, the QB play was horrid. Houston's rotating starters (Oliver Luck, Gifford Nielsen, and Archie Manning) combined for 16 TD's and 29 INT's. Also, the Oilers lost alot of close games. They lost three in overtime and five more they lost by 10 pts or less.

Game Summary

It was never a contest as the Cowboys ran all over the Oilers to build a 27-0 lead in the 2nd quarter. Aikman ran and threw for a TD in the first quarter and Bill Bates returned an INT for a TD. Then two Luis Zendejas field goals made it 27-0. Houston tried to make a comeback with a field goal late in the 1st half and two 3rd quarter TD passes by Oliver Luck. Another field goal with 8:23 left in the 4th quarter brought Houston within 8. With 39 seconds left, Luck completed passes of 20 and 44 yards that brought Houston to the 9 yard line. With 7 seconds left, Ken Norton Jr. picked off Luck's pass at the 2 yard line to preserve the Cowboys victory.

Round 1, Game 10 - 1980 Saints at 1985 Bills
1980 Saints

It's a shame the New Orleans Saints were so bad this season, because it was a waste of Archie Manning's best season as a pro. Manning put up 3700 yards and 23 TD's. The Saints weren't completely terrible. Despite a 1-15 record, they kept the score close several times and lost by 11 pts or less 8 times over the season. An anemic defense and inconsistent running is what doomed the Saints in 1980.

1985 Bills

The Bills were a completely terrible team. It's amazing they were able to win 2 games and keep 8 others close. QB Vince Ferragamo and Bruce Mathison split time at the QB position and the results were about the same - pathetic. They combined for 9 TD passes and 31 INT's. The only standout player on the Bills this year was RB Greg Bell who ran for 883 yards and caught 58 passes for 576 yards, combining for 9 TD's on the season.

1980 Saints at 1985 Bills Game Summary
Two of the worst teams in NFL history played a memorable back and forth shootout with consistent offense and only one turnover. It was a duel between Manning and Ferragamo from the beginning. They put together nice drives in the 1st quarter, both leading to TD's that had the game tied at 7-7. Ferragamo threw his 2nd TD pass midway through the 2nd quarter to put the Bills up, but Manning answered with his own TD pass with 52 seconds left in the half. Then disaster struck for the Saints, as a defensive breakdown on the ensuing series led to a 77 yard TD pass from Ferragamo to Jerry Butler that gave the Bills a 21-14 lead going into the half. Manning found Wes Chandler for a 39 yard TD in the 3rd quarter, and led an early 4th quarter TD drive that put the Saints on top 28-21. The Bills closed within 4 on a FG halfway through the 4th. The Bills took over again with 4:45 left, and Greg Bell put the team on his back and several big runs put them down to the 6 yard line, where Ferragamo throws a TD pass to put the Bills up 31-28. The Saints had one last chance, but a game tying 51 yard FG attempt went wide left.

1973 Oilers at 1986 Buccaneers

1973 Oilers

The 73 Oilers are definitely one of the worst teams in history. They went 1-13, and I don't know how they managed to score 31 points in that one game, much less win it. Dan Pastorini led the way at QB and he seemed to be more successful at finding his oponent than his own receivers. Without a running game or defense to speak of, the Oilers couldn't even keep games close, losing 10 of their 14 games by more than double digits. And for those that think Jerry Glanville sucked, Head Coach Bill Peterson was fired after starting this season 0-5 and combining for a 1-18 career record.

Top Stars

RB Bob Gresham 104-400-3.8-2, 28-244-9.3-1

1986 Bucs

Who knows what would've happened if Bo Jackson had played for the Buccaneers? But what did happen when he refused was the usual pathetic Tampa Bay season that dogged them throughout the 80s. The defense was horrendous, never allowing less than 20 pts and averaging 33.8 pts allowed per game. QB Steve Young tried, but had very little help and the somewhat capable offense faded down the stretch. The Bucs would draft #1 again, which they used to pick up Vinny Testaverde, which was probably worse than not getting Bo Jackson at all.

Game Summary: 1973 Oilers at 1986 Buccaneers
In an extremely dull game, the teams traded FG's back and forth as the Oilers took a 6-3 lead. Thanks to some big plays by Steve Young, Tampa Bay took the lead early in the 2nd quarter on 5 yd TD run by Ron Springs. The Bucs added a FG late in the 3rd quarter to take a 13-6 lead. Houston made it close early in the 4th after Skip Butler hit his 3rd FG of the day. Young would seal the victory late in the 4th with a 47 yard TD pass to Phil Freeman.

Great idea. Needless to say, I am really rooting for the 1960 Cowboys to do something special.

Nope, I'm gonna keep this going. I was doing this dynasty from work and it's been busier than usual lately. I'm gonna try to make an update tonight.

ROUND 1: 1971 BUFFALO BILLS AT 1994 HOUSTON OILERS

1971 Buffalo Bills
In his 3rd season, OJ Simpson could not do much to help out a team that combined for 32 Interceptions, 26 of them by starting QB Dennis Shaw alone. An anemic offense scored less than 10 pts 7 times and was shutout 4 times. The defense was not much better, giving up 20 or more pts 13 weeks of the 14 week season. The team was in a rebuilding mode and in a mere 2 seasons would improve to a 9-5 record, thanks to the increased dominance of OJ Simpson.

1994 Houston Oilers

The Oilers didn't need Warren Moon anymore. He was washed up. Why do you need Warren Moon when you have Cody carlson, Billy Joe Tolliver, and Bucky Richardson to take his place? While Warren Moon went off to the Vikings to post back to back 4000+ yard seasons, the Oilers struggled in a miserable season where nothing seemed to go right. The Oilers could not seem to win the close games, as they lost 6 of them by 3 pts or less, including 4 in a row at one point that must have demoralized the team. The three headed Warren Moon replacement squad posted a 49.5% completion rate with 13 TD's and 17 INT's. However, the move may have paid off in the end, as they were able to draft Steve McNair with the 3rd overall pick next season.

Game Summary:

Billy Joe Tolliver got the starting nod for the Oilers and he made it look like a good decision with an early 9 yd TD pass that put his team up 7-0. Lorenzo White followed that up later in the 1st quarter with a splendid 86 yard TD run. Two Al De Grego FG's later and the Bills were staring at a 20-3 deficit. They tried to close in before the half, as OJ Simpson found the end zone from 10 yards out, but the Oilers quickly answered on another TD pass from Tolliver, with 49 seconds left in the half. Dennis Shaw was having a terrible game, throwing 5 INT's but his one TD came midway through the 3rd quarter that made it a 10 ot game and put the Bills back in business. After a Houston FG early in the 4th, OJ Simpson found the end zone for his 2nd TD of the day making it a 6 pt game with only 5:29 left. Unfortunately for the Bills, the Oilers are unable to run out the final 5:29 for the 30-24 win.

Round 1: 1969 Pittsburgh Steelers at 1999 Cleveland Browns

1969 Steelers

Despite a roster that included Joe Greene, LC Greenwood, and Roy Jefferson, and coached by Chuck Knoll, the Steelers suffered a miserable season by losing their last 13 games in a row to end with a 1-13 record. AtQB, Terry Hanratty did his best, but other than getting the ball to Roy Jefferson, was less than successful. Jefferson had a great season with 67 catches for 1079 yards and 9 TD's, but no one else was able to step up.

1999 Browns

The city of Cleveland finally had a football team again, but they would soon find that their team would not perform to the levels of Jacksonville and Carolina in their debut seasons. There were some bright spots, though. In week 8, they took advantage of an incredibly stupid timeout called by the Saints and won on a hail mary pass with no time left. Two weeks later, they defeated defeated archrival Pittsburgh Steelers 16-15. Those would be their only two wins of the season. Tim Couch showed some promise that was unfortunately never fulfilled.

1969 Steelers at 1999 Browns

The Steelers stun the Browns late in the 1st quarter as Roy Jefferson beats his man deep and hauls in a 77 yard TD pass from QB Dick Shiner (no comment) to take a 7-3 lead. Tim Couch threw two 2nd quarter TD passes to Kevin Johnson to give his Browns a 17-7 lead at the half. Pittsburgh came up with another huge play with a 78 yard punt return that closed the score to 14-17. Tim Couch, who played great all game long, calmly led the Browns to a FG and TD on consecutive drives that put the Browns up by 14. The Steelers did not threaten again.

Losing to the worst of the Bucs pitiful 80s teams should be a good indication that the Oilers will advance far.

Losing to the 89 Cowboys doesn't hurt either. Then again, I could have sworn the 1994 team was worse than that but I guess Lo White was just too much. I didn't realize he was still on that team. I thought he left after 1993 when Gary Brown had his 1000 yard year.

1968 Bills at 2002 Bengals
1968 Bills

It's amazing that the Bills were such a terrible team, what with superstars such as QB Dan Darragh, RB Max Anderson, and WR Haven Moses to lead the team. All sarcasm aside, the Bills seemed to play teams tough and managed a win and a tie and 5 other games they lost by less than 10 pts. Haven Moses is the closest thing they could point to as a star. He had 42 catches for 633 yards and TD's.

2002 Bengals

One year after they seemed like they were making some strides, the Bengals completely collapsed once again. They had a horrendous defense that allowed 27 points or more 13 times. The offense actually wasn't too bad. After only scoring 23 pts in their first 4 games, they managed a not too shabby 21.3 pts per game. They were led by QB Jon Kitna (3178 yards, 16 TD's), Corey Dillon (314 carries for 1311 yards and 7 TD's), and WR Chad Johnson (69 catches for 1166 yards, 5 TD's). The talent was clearly there, but they were missing leadership. They got that in Head Coach Marvin Lewis next year and improved to an 8-8 record.

1968 Bills VS. 2002 Bengals
The Bengals offense was very efficient and staked them to a 13-3 2nd quarter lead. The Bills played with alot of grit and made it a 7 pt game with a FG right before the half. With 2:31 left in the 3rd quarter, they tied it up on a 4 yard TD run. Three minutes later, they shockingly took a 3 pt lead with a 40 yd FG. The defens ecould not hold, though as they allowed Peter Warrick to get wide open. Jon Kitna found him for an 81 yard TD pass to get the lead back. Another Kitna to Warrick combination sealed the game for the Bengals.

Round 1: 1967 Atlanta Falcons vs. 1961 Washington Redskins

67 Falcons
Despite playing the Baltimore Colts tough on opening day, the Falcons strggled through an awful season. They were only able to win one game, a narrow 1 pt victory over the Vikings, and managed a tie against the Redskins. They were blown out quite often, as they lost by 20 or more pts 7 times on the season. RB Junior Coffey appeared to be their best skill player. He put up 722 yards with a 4.0 yards per carry. Their only pro bowler was LB Tommy Nobis (so that's where the Tommy Nobis center comes from. Neat!).

61 Redskins

The Redskins boasted one of the worst offenses I've ever seen. They were shutout three times and five other times they were held to single digits. If it wasn't sor a surprise 34-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the final week of the season, they would've had a winless season. WR Fred Dugan was their top star as he caught 53 passes for 817 yards and 4 TD's. Norm Snead did his best with 2300 yards and 11 TD's, but 22 INT's were his undoing.

67 Falcons at 61 Redskins
It was to be Fred Dugan's day. He hauled in a 22 yard pass in the 1st quarter to give the Redskins a 7-3 lead. The Falcons scored two FG's to take a 9-7, but Snead drives the Redskins to the Falcons 12 and completes a 12 yard TD pass just before the half. Falcons try to get back in it but poor offensive line play leads to sacks that stall several of their drives. Snead hits another TD pass late in the 3rd quarter to put Washington up 20-9. The Falcons were desperate to get the ball back. With Washington facing a 3rd and 6 with 5:27 left in the game, they blitzed and got right in Snead's face. Snead was able to get the ball off in time and Dugan comes through with the 20 yard reception that effectively ends the game. Two more Redskin FG's and the game was over.

Round1: 1966 New York Giants vs. 1962 Oakland Raiders

1966 New York Giants
The 66 Giants fielded what was perhaps the worst defense in NFL history. 10 times they allowed 30 or more pts and 4 times they allowed 47 or more pts. The biggest humiliation came in a road game against the Washington Redskins, which were the only team the Giants had beaten that season. The Redskins took out revenge by humiliating the Giants 72-41. The offense of rotating QB's (including Earl Morral) and RB's was below average and the only offensive star was WR Homer Jones who caught 48 passes for 1044 yards and 8 TD's.

1962 Oakland Raiders

The 62 Raiders were a bad team but managed to keep most games fairly close. Of their 13 losses, 8 of them were by 10 pts or less and another one was by only 11 pts. They were still pretty bad. Part of the blame can be attributed to QB Cotton Davidson, whose 37.1% completions percentage and 23 INT's (with only 7 TD's) was pathetic even by old NFL rules standards. CLem Daniels had a decent season on the ground, with 766 yards and 7 TD's on 4.8 yards per carry. The team also featured notable players Jim Otto and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson.

Game Summary

The Raiders quickly built a 13-0 1st quarter lead against the pathetic Giants defense. Any attempt for a comeback was thwarted by the 6 INT's thrown by the Giants QB duo of Earl Morral and Gary Wood (who was a pitiful 1 of 12 for 9 yards with 2 INT's). Meanwhile, the Giants defense amazingly failed to pick off a single pass from Cotton Davidson and his 236 yards anbd 2 TD's earned him player of the game honors in a 27-9 Raiders victory.

Rock on. The Oilers didn't advance. I can always root for awful Cowboys teams to win it.

What are you talking about? Two Oilers teams are going on to the next round. Only one Cowboys team, of course...

Oops, sorry. My bad, I was reading that wrong. Darn Houston public school education.

I've obviously been on FOFC too long, because I first read that as "Dean Houston public school education."

I still can't believe the 76 Bucs and 89 Cowboys were eliminated so early.

Here are the upcoming 2nd round matchups:

1960 Cowboys at 1965 Steelers
1982 Colts at 1983 Oilers
2001 Panthers at 1966 Giants
2000 Chargers at 1967 Falcons
1996 Jets at 1968 Bills
1991 Colts at 1969 Steelers
1990 Patriots at 1971 Bills
1980 Saint at 1973 Oilers

Now that I have a broken heel and nothing to do, it's time to get this thign started again:

1960 Cowboys at 1965 Pittsburgh Steelers

How they got here:

1960 Cowboys

The inept Cowboys offense couldn't even get moving against a terrible 1970 Patriots defense. It took some surprisingly tough defensive play and special teams to keep the game close. But without an offense to speak of, the Cowboys watched the Pats walk away with a 24-14 victory.

1965 Steelers

The Steelers sufffered an embarassing 34-3 loss to the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers were expected to go all the way in this tournament, but the Steelers played terribly, even making Steve Spurrier look like an efficient NFL QB.

The Game

This one wasn't even close. After being embarassed by one of the worst teams in history, The 1960 Cowboys did not disappoint in round 2. The story of this game was Dallas QB Eddie LeBaron, who turned in one of the worst performances I have ever seen by a QB, fictional or real. LeBaron completed 19 of 45 passes for 291 yards and a TD. That doesn't sound too bad. But he was intercepted (Jeffrey Jones voice) NINE TIMES. Also, the Cowboys managed to lose two fumbles. In the 1sthalf, they only had one drive that did not end in a turnover, and it was a three and out. It's amazing that the Steelers only had a 23-0 lead at the half. The turnover issues continued in the 2ndhalf and the Steelers ran away with a 52-6 victory. Guys, I think the Cowboys are gonna win this tournament.
