Question Computer Problem Help

On one of my computers I'm having a problem with the computer not detecting the DVD ROM drive or the CD-RW drive. One bootup I get a message before windows starts during the BIOS bootup that the CD/DVD Rom drive cannot be detected, so it's not a problem with Windows ME not detecting it (which would be easy to fix).

I've checked all the connections inside the computer to the drives and they all seem fine, and although I'm fairly adept at fixing windows problems, this seems to be a problem elsewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

vindictive roommate, incompetent family, eh, about the same thing. I'm expected to fix it though, plus there are some files that I need to get off to put on my shiny new computer, which is easier with ability to use the CD-RW drive.

Do you have the master/slave jumpers set correctly?

Are there any diagnositic tools in BIOS? I'd say it's a hardware problem with the drive, though, there's a very very slim chance it could be with the IDE port on the motherboard

The computer had been running fine until just a few days ago, so unless someone opened it up and changed something I don't see why not.

I'm gonna try to check BIOS diagnostic tools when I get the chance.

Have you tried replacing the cables?

Replacing cables is another thing I'll try if I get the chance. It's not a computer I use much, so I'm not going to spend any money on it, though I'll try to get a hold of some.
