Bettis moved to number 2!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1599772

Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said at a Wednesday, Aug. 20 news conference that Steelers RB Amos Zereoue would open the 2003 season as the starting running back. Cowher said he came to the decision Monday, Aug. 18, two days after the Steelers' second pre-season game, and informed Zereoue and RB Jerome Bettis of the decision.

Well, we'll see how long that lasts. Though I don't think the bus has too much tread left on his tires.

I don't know if I like ESPN's new line spacing...

I don't read this as the end for Bettis. I think both of them will be great for the Steelers in the NFL world, but bad for fantasy football.

Don't read too much into that. It could change week to week. Bettis has struggled against the Ravens lately and Zereoue has done well. Both will get plenty of carries throughout the course of the season. Also look out for Verron Haynes, he could potentially be a third down back this season.

great, I just saw my team draft Bettis after losing out on Steve McNair by 3 picks...
Now I need another RB, having only M.Faulk, Bettis and William Green. (Not that I plan to go into the league iwth less then 5 RB.)

As a Steelers fan, I am encouraged by the news. Amos is a much better athlete and more explosive runner/receiver. The more Amos touches the ball, the better off they are.

Coupled with a story on ESPN.com, I see the Steelers using the swing pass to Amos quite a bit this year, to offset their crappy right side of the O-line.

Honestly, I'm amazed that Bettis is still playing. The man is big and slow, albeit powerful, but he's not been a true force for a few years now. I really thought he'd retire when he messed the ankle/knee/leg whatever it was a couple years ago.

As much as I would love to just bash pitt for no reason, I have to say that I have huge reservations about their potential this season. Relying on maddux full time, and with the O-line they have, this could be a serious pitfall year for the black and gold.

Being a Bengal fan its always fun to tear into the other divisional teams whenever I get the opportunity

I think Amos Z is a much better back, but I don't think he'll be able to hold up as a starter over the course of a season without sharing the load somewhat. Bettis will get his chances although neither guy will be someone I'd want as a starter in fantasy football.

Remeber, back in the 94-95 season, Byron Morris and Barry Foster shared (pretty much equally) the RB role all season. I believe that it resulted in the Steelers breaking the record for most rushing yards for a team, in a season.

As a fan, it bums me out that Bettis is just not as good as he used to be. It's one thing you have to deal with as a fan of a player. Everybody loses a step, everybody gets old.

I think that was Bam Morris and Eric Pegram.

Pegram and Morris would have been 95-96 when the went the Super Bowl. I see similar usage with Bettis/Amos.

That also was the last time the running game was not in the Top 10 and they had a strong passing attack with Thigpen, Mills, Hastings and Johnson.

I guess the year I am thinking of is 93-94. It would have been the year that they lost to San Diego in the Championship game. If I remember, that was Barry's last year with the Steelers (then he played 2 more years with the Panthers before retiring). I think Pergram was on the roster this year as well, perhaps his first year with the steelers.

I am not sure of the exact record they broke in the year I am thinking of. I checked some records at nfl.com and they aren't listed for team rushing records. I think it was a team rushing record by 2 running backs. I am almost possitive that it was morris and foster. I could be mistaken.

Foster 851
Morris 836

Thanks for making me look like I am losing my mind. Perhaps it was a team record I was thinking of, total yards from scrimmage, or a record by 2 guys that start their first name with the letter B. Who knows. Either way, getting back to the origional subject, if Zereoue and Bettis can be used in tandem like foster and morris, it might be something to look forward to.

Amos Zereoue is from WVU. Go Mountaineers!!!!

I wonder how an all Mountaineer team would do in FF? Anthony Becht, Marc Bulger (if he starts somewhere), A Z, Jerry Porter, Mike Vanderjagt, etc.

Good year to be a WVU fan.
