I played some Tecmo the other day and got a first-hand reminder of how good video Bo was. I hate that guy. I called the damn play, why can't I stop him!
I still think Tecmo Rice doesn't get enough credit, though. He caught every pass thrown to him, ever. |

I liked the original Techmo Bowl Redskins... they ruled!
But, yeah, Techmo Bo was unstoppable... and Simmons article was right on. |

Tecmo L.T. was, by far, the best defensive player ever. You knew you weren't getting your PAT off when you played the Giants, and there was no reason to even consider going for a FG.
Plus, he made his teammates better. Like, when the linemen were being blocked, you could just run L.T. up and down the line of scrimmage where he would bounce all the offensive linemen, freeing up his teammates. |

Another guy who deserves mention is Super Tecmo Bowl Howie Long. At the top of his game, he could dive through the OL and sack the QB immediately after the snap.
Arguably the #2 defensive player of all time (but still well behind LT). |

Ahhh videoBo. I have a picture around here somewhere of a 1000 yard game I had with him one day. Snap, run to the other goal line with Allen and go out at the 1. Run with Bo to the other 1, wash rinse repeat til time runs out. Of course you had to score every now and then on 4th down.

In Tecmo Super Bowl I used to get at least ten sacks a game with Ray Childress. Just have him move just to the side of the center and then make him dive. Automatic sack.

On the subject of Tecmo, this conversation came up recently:
Me: You know, they should release Tecmo 2004 for the PlayStation 2. Exact same game, same graphics, no improvements at all. Just update the rosters. (My friends all stare at me in silence) Me (sensing I've gone too far): You know, as a discount game. You could sell it for like $30. (Pause) One friend, gravely serious: I would pay one hundred dollars for that game. (Everyone nodding.) |

David Fulcher was pretty good too, for those Bengal's fans out there. I scored 4 TD's in a game with him off INT's against a friend. The guy was like a slower version of Bo when he got the ball, you pretty much had to time your dive to tackle him, even then there was a chance you would bounce off him. |

I played Tecmo Super Bowl a lot for the SNES. I typically played with a team I liked a lot, but if I wanted a team just for playing, I'd use San Diego. Marrion Butts was a beast- everyone would bounce off him and you just couldn't stop Junior Seau.

For whatever reason, TE Cap Boso of the Bears was unstoppable in the original Tecmo for the Sega. You could throw to him on the crossing play all day long and no one could stop it. You wouldn't gain a lot of yards, but with the Bears D all you had to do was score and the game was over.

Techmo is the only reason I keep my Genesis hooked up. That and NBA Jam, but mostly Techmo.

LOL -- I posted my above tribute to Cap Boso before going over to reading the article. Simmons is a genius. About a billion times better than Jayson Stark.

My junior outside linebacker is doing pretty well to dominate in NCAA. I run a 3-4 and have him blitz most every play and 8 games into the year he holds the NCAA single game, single season, and career sack records. He's 6'6" 200 lbs with speed 86, though it won't let me play him at wide reciever too.

Tecmo Bowl Derrick Thomas was like using L.T. with house rules. He was very good, but just not the same.
I remember using the above mentioned "Howie Long Dive-Sack" many times with Reggie White. Good times. |

As the Cowboys, I would call one play where Alvin Harper would always catch the ball. He was open 95% of the time. He just did a cross pattern and stop right in the middle of the field. You wouldn't get any yards after the catch, but it was almost a guaranteed 10 yard gain each time. Tecmo Alvin Harper had some pretty good hands.

Yes, Curt Warner's best years were with the Seahawks, but at the end of his career he had a brief stint with the Rams backing up Charles White. |
