Thumbs up Help with gas prices

Hey guys, to help with gas prices. I don't know how many of you use AAA. But if you're a member you can get a credit card that has a 5% cash back on gas purchases at the pump. This is a rebate credited to your account every month not at the end of the year. Granted it's not much but it's something. I save anywhere from $5 to $10 a month. You also have to pay you bill in full every month otherwise the 5% rebate will cost you whatever your interest rate is. But I do pay mine off so I actually do save the money.

Oh, one more thing. It does help to have a small car. I have a Ford Festiva and a Ford Escort. Both get 25 to 30+ miles to the gallon. People laughed at my car (Festiva) when I bought it new 10 years ago. They aren't laughing now. It's still running (190,000 miles on it) and good gas mileage.

The Ford Fiestiva is the funniest car out there. I'd almost rather have a Hyundai (pre 00) than a ten year old Fiestiva.

You forgot to mention how the Festiva saves on parking. You can just fold it up and stick it in your wallet!

You guys are missing the point. I save 5% with a AAA credit card on gas purchases, and I have 2 fuel efficient cars. I was just trying to help people with an alternative to gas prices. No, I don't work for AAA.

Dolphin: I'm actually thinking of getting the AAA card, but I couldn't help but slap at the Festiva. I drive an Elantra, so I know the joy of good gas mileage.

Your comment about being able to fit it in your wallet was pretty funny. It reminds me of when I first bought it 10 years ago. I drove it to my grandma's house and my uncle was over there. He walks out and sees it and says, "Hey, where's the other half of your car?"

I can laugh about it now.

Dolphinfan;

Personally, I hear where you're coming from with the efficient car theory. Its nice to save money. I guess you're one of those people who "Don't really care about cars"

I'm not a car buff by any stretch of the imagination, but one of the joys of being an adult means buying a nice car. I drove around in terrible cars during highschool and college, don't you deserve it? Or are you a Point A to Point B type of guy.

Well, I'm a little older than you and I have a family and a baby on the way. So every dollar I save helps.

There are lots of nice cars that aren't gas hogs.

My junky '91 Ford Escort Pony(only 120k miles) still gets 45mpg on the highway. Most reliable car I've ever had. Still on the first clutch, too.

since I work three miles from home, I'm definitely in the "get me from point A to point B" camp. I'd love to have a luxury car, but geez, I'm only driving ten minutes a day. It's not worth it to me.

That being said, I'd never drive a Ford Festiva.

Well, the card is a good idea for those struggling and/or shocked at new gas prices.

However, buying a new car to save money on gas is not necesarily sound financial thinking.

I don't take much as an insult. Believe me I heard it all when I bought the car.

I drive my wife's (it was hers before we were married) '93 Saturn SL2 to work every day (about 75 miles round trip). It's still in great shape despite having 137k miles on it. I need to fill it up after 4 trips, which today cost me almost $16, but obviously has been typically much less. I'll ride that car as far as it will go.

Our other cars are a '98 Cherokee (seldom driven, but is paid off) and an '01 Mazda MPV.

And when you drive a Festiva you never have to worry about spending money on women because they won't date you anyway.

If you have nearby shell stations, you can get 5% off your shell purchases and 1% off future shell purchases for all other transactions.

hmmmm......OR...

We could all buy big assed SUV's, run the air constantly and use up all the oil on the planet in about 25 years. Then we can finally press on to alternative fuel sources.

The Ford Festiva is the oil companies ticket to longevity.
