Related question (which came up today in a discussion about Kurt Warner's high cap figure):
If a player is willing to waive aspects of his contract (such as future years and/or a portion of his signing bonus), what impact does this have on his cap figure in the event he is cut or traded? or is this even legal? It sounds like it's illegal to me. Anyone know?

I think the player has to agree to renegotiate the contract and the only way to do that is adding more years. The Cheifs would ahve been more than happy to increase Holmes contract for the lifetime of the contract(2 years I believe) but to get the job done that meant adding years to the deal which they didn't really want to do.
