OT - Big day for juvenile thoroughbreds
Today, there are two pretty big-deal races featuring two year old colts (juveniles) -- the quality of horses who might well be pointing toward next year's classics. If you're interested in getting a look at some up-and-coming horses, this afternoon the races are being carried by CNBC (?!?) from 3:30 to 4:40 pm ET.
Attached are the DRF past performances for the two premiere races. The Champagne (at Belmont) might have a tougher field overall than the Breeder's Futurity (at Keeneland), but both races have consistently produced top-grade contenders over the years. At Keeneland, I think the "figure" players might overlook TIGER HUNT, a trainee of Elliott Walden's who has some real promise. He has a rally style, and that doesn't work all that well at Keeneland generally, but he might get a good setup from a quick early pace. MASS MEDIA looks like the one to beat here, off a visually impressive allowance win, but the son of Touch Gold will need to pass a few early runners to get there. If the exacta with those two comes in, I'll be in fat city. At Belmont, I think the quality is deep, even with a short field of only eight entries. Several could win this without surprising anyone - CHAPEL ROYAL has been training well since his loss in the Hopeful, and BIRDSTONE has plenty of natural talent and a deceptive last race where we was interfered with. Either could be a defensible favorite here. I'll be watching the speedy son of Smoke Glacken (one of my favorite horses of recent years) named READ THE FOOTNOTES - if he can carry his speed out over the 1 1/16 mile distance, he might never let anyone get close. edit - PP files will be in the next post, as I inadvertently sent this one in before attaching them... Sweet. I'll have to make sure to watch them. EDIT: Why the hell would CNBC be showing horse racing? That's like PBS showing a porn. Wierd times...

In case you missed the TV coverage (like I did), here's the replay of the Keeneland race,
Keeneland 6th Race My longshot TIGER HUNT made a monstrous move from the back of the pack during the turn, just what you want from a developing colt with a distance pedigree. I saw a lot in him today, and a few bucks across the board on him paid pretty nicely even without the win. |

Chalk took the Belmont race, as BIRDSTONE and CHAPEL ROYAL made up the exacta.
