Cubs/Red Sox hypothetical...

It's been 95 years since the Cubs won a World Series. It's been 85 years since the Red Sox did so.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that either the Red Sox or the Cubs win the World Series this year. Does that become a lifetime employment situation for the manager in question, or would he still run the same risk as any other skipper of being fired in tough times?

Cubs fans, Red Sox fans...this one's for you.

If the Cubs and Red Sox make it to the seies, it will probably go 7 games and game 7 will go extra innings and become the longest game in history as neither team will be able to bring home the winning run.

Those cities will love him and run him out of town the second they percieve his team under-preforms for a couple of seasons. He gets a little more room for error, but not "lifetime employment."

As the final pop fly out goes to land for either the Cubs/Red Sox to win the world series, the world will stop spinning on its axis...which will throw us all hundreds of miles an hour in one direction, thus ending the world. This is the only reason I cheer for the Marlins to win the Series

I would dread a Sox/Cubs series for a different reason. The last time I watched a Series in full was 1986. I was not a die-hard BoSox fan but I hated the Mets with a passion. I still haven't gotten completely over that. This year would be a repeat because I hate the Cubs and would want the BoSox to win badly. But it's still hypothetical.

Agreed. They should fire him after this season regardless of the outcome. Maybe they can attract a quality veteran manager if they win it all.

Well I live in Chicago and give the Cub's opinion. I think Dusty would be here for a long time, and I am basing this on Mike Ditka. Even almost 20 years after winning the Super Bowl a good amount of people want him as the new coach of the Bears after Jauron gets fired.

The '85 team here is still influencial on TV and radio, some have their own shows, including the coach and its players.

Of course no one is asking for Jordan to come back to the Bulls and Phil Jackson, so I could be wrong.

A Red Sox/Cubs series is probably the only series that I'd watch every game of. I like both teams.

I'd be willing to bet that series would generate the highest ratings for a World Series in the last 2 decades.

Little is on the hot seat no matter what. The ownership here would be loved like the Yawkeys used to be, and the players would be considered gods.

Chicago wins and you could get Dusty Baker elected King with Ditka and Jordan.

I don't want the success of my Red Sox or the Cubs come at the expense of the other.

We both have suffered a long time and whoever's moment in the sun would be shadowed by the media's fixation on the other teams misery.

the owners have done a hell of a job since they've been here. It's like they're truly fans of the game. And they such great guys. Did you see Tom Henry talking about not changing his underwear? I hear an interesting angle on things about seeing the Yankees win and Cubs. A Yankees-Cubs series would create more interest then a Sox-Cubbies series. You either hate the Yanks, or love them. Chicago and Boston are the underdog fan favorites. With both playing, diehard fans outside of these teams will not really care. If you get the Yankees-Cubs, the intensity and support of a series would be tremdous. You have a hate or a passion of love for "Goliath", and the Cubbies (David) are sentimental fan favorites with Sammy and the Cubs long drought.

1986. What a year.

I still remember the pall that the city was under after the infamous Buckner incident in game 6. It was gray and rainy and everyone was so depressed. It was like the whole city of Boston knew that the Sox were going to lose game 7.

What are ya, nuts?! A BoSox/Cubs series would be the most compelling WS in history. People would tune in to see which of these teams can finally get their win, because one of the teams would have to. NBC and CBS would love to have a Series that nobody tunes in to, because then people would be watching their programming, instead.

Fox/ESPN, conversely, would love Red Sox/Cubs. It'd be a bonanza for those two, and basically doom (for a week) for the other networks.

Nope I'm right there with you. I hope they both lose in really painful ways (the Cubs losing to the Marlins in the NLCS and the Sox making it to the WS but losing a big lead in the 9th inning of game 7 because their bullpen and defense implodes).

I am really hoping for a Boston Chicago series. My guess is that the Red Sox would blow a three run lead in the ninth. I mean the cubs may be losers, but the Red Sox have made it an art.

Anyone see the HBO thing on the Red Sox where they interview Bucky "Fucking" Dent, as the Bostonian fans call him. I about fell out of my chair when he said he had gone to a game at Fenway, and his name went up in lights as Bucky "F" Dent.
