Stupid comments by "color guys"

Anyone here any good (as in thats so dumb its funny) comments lately from announcing teams?

Just thought i would ask as i listened to Dan Dierdorf make the following comment after Green Bay punted the ball and KC got called for holding on the return....

"This could be a first down for Green Bay depending on wether it was before or after the snap."

Sure...............i guess holding BEFORE the snap would be bad........

I thought that the whole Rush debacle taught us that the color of the guy wasn't important.

"That would've been a touchdown if he had not made that tackle."

"That's a good play to call, when it works."

My favorite still has to be years ago during the Buccaneer lean years. It was when we had Bill Capece aka "Capece of shit" as our kicker. Yes, the same Capece that prompted coach McKay to use OG George Yarno to kick an extra point he was so bad.

Anyway, it's one of those close games that we heard about but rarely were involved in but we were still down. We run a play and get to our own 45 yard line.

The color guy goes "first down. We're still just a little bit out of Capece's range."

No shit, not to mention that an extra point was pushing his range but 72 yards was just a little bit out of Dempseys range too.

Also, this same guy remarked ( right after Chuck Muncie returned from his cocaine suspension ) "No matter where he goes, Chuck Muncie is always one of the most popular players among his teammates."

Heh, and he wasn't making a joke.

Gee, I can't imagine why Chuck was so popular.

[edit to add]

The year was '83. That season, Bill Capece was 23-26 in extra points. Yes, the dude missed 3 ep's and a staggering 10-23 on field goals. He was cut one game before the season ended when he missed 2 short field goals and an extra point on monday night against green bay.

After the game when asked about his kicker John McKay said simply "Capece is kaput."

Just another reason I really miss coach McKay.

I was just watching a little show we have around here called "Razorback Classics" where Rich Schaeffer interviews the key players in a great Razorback game from the past and then they replay the game showing almost every snap. This episode was the 1999 victory over #2 or 3 Tennesssee, fresh off their National Championship (in 98, the year we had them beaten in Knoxville and Stoerner fumbled the game away). So they get to halftime of the replay, where Tennessee is leading 17-14. Schaeffer asks Stoerner in the studio, so after watching that first half again, do you remember thinking you were going to have to score some more points to win the game?

I think Stoerner was hoping that the 14-17 score would work out as a win somehow.

I was listening to a local radio sports show a couple of years ago, and they asked a former Razorback QB to give the key points for the Razorbacks to win the upcoming game. He replied, "Well Randy, I really think it is going to come down to who plays better on offense, defense, and special teams."

This thread should really take off during the MNF broadcast. Madden says at least a thread's worth of stupid remarks every game.

In the Bronco/Steeler game today, they had a graphic that showed if a team wins the turnover margain by 3, they'll win the game 90% of the time. At the time of the graphic, the Steelers are winning the turnover battle by a count of 3-0. They proceeded to talk about how the Steelers had already won the game based off of the graphic.

No guys, it means the differential for the entire game. We're in the third quarter. About 5 minutes after their talk on it, Denver forces Bettis into a fumble, scored a TD on the following drive and hangs on for the win at the end.

It amazed me they had a graphic up on the screen where the two announcers had no clue as to what it was about. They talked and assumed that it was if you FORCED 3 turnovers, you had a 90% chance to win the game. Dumb.

Nah, the announcers make stupid statements all the time. Some of the statements are understandable. (bad spotter, someone talking in your ear, etc.)

Graphics are usually brought up during a commercial so the announcers have a chance to be prepped on it. Getting a graphic wrong is about the worst thing you can do as an announcer. (yes, I've worked in the business)

Kickoff with 1 second left before GB and KC go into overtime:

"And that return will put Green Bay and Brett Favre into some good field position... Oops, were heading into overtime"

So many other ones, but just cant think of them..

Ooops.

To back Troy up, I hate any time they bring up a stat that shows something like that. I dislike it for another reason, it's always something that either is obviously going to help you win a game or that is a reflection of you winning a game (like "when they run the ball X number of times"-- I forget what game it was last season but the stat was something like "when they run the ball 40 times in a game"). Just once I would like to see a coach be losing the game and do nothing but run the ball because he saw some stat that said they were 12-0 when they run the ball 40 times in a game.

Sorry for the ramble, but had to get that pet peave off my shoulder. (Don't even get me started on the dam Flyers announcers and the stat they love to trot out "When they score more than 3 goals in a game they are...", imagine that, score more goals than the league average goals against and you have a winning record in those games.)

Keeping in line with the topic. I hear the Rams are hoping to keep themselves afloat in the NFC West race with hopes of Vick coming back this season.

Actually, I'm really glad somebody else got annoyed with it too. I happened to have caught that part of the game and it was irritating me that the damn announcers couldn't figure out the meaning of "turnover differentials".

Sunday Night:

Terrell Owens has a pass bounce off his hands, then in and out of the hands of the Seattle defender.

Maguire actually says: "The defender couldn't have caught this anyway, because he stepped out of bounds, and you can't step out of bounds and be the first one to touch the ball!"

Then I flipped back to the new season of The Office on BBC America and away from those jackasses.

What made this even worse was he said this as they were showing the replay in slow motion.

The Office is a faux documentary series (really a sitcom with no laugh track) centering on a small industrial office in some crappy little English burg. Very entertaining. It is a parody of office life, yes.

Plus this game featured 2 teams I have as little interest in as can be imagined.

Craig James last year during a Bengals game said that an interception might be the key to getting the Bengals going. It went something like, "Sometimes you just need a bad play to get things going."

Yeah, the Bengals were really short on bad plays last year.

A bit off topic, but I'm still haunted by John Madden describing Brad Johnson reaching between the centers legs for the ball as "like sticking your hands in a rain forest." IIRC, that was in the first monday night game this year.

Bill Walton has had many, but this is the only one I can remember right now. It was just before halftime of one of the NBA Final games between the Orlando Magic and the Houston Rockets in the mid 90's. One team, I don't remember which, was trailing by one or two. He said, "If I'm the coach right now, I tell my guys not to try and score. You want to be losing at halftime."

I remember that. Wasn't there a guy on the foul line? I remember Albert saying "So, Bill, you're really suggesting this guy miss these two free throws?"

Bill responded that, yes, it would be a good idea to miss the two free throws because the angry team would win the game. The angry team would be whichever one was losing at halftime.

TroyF

On a side note, how fun is it going to be listening to Bill Walton call about 80 games worth of his own son when the Lakers are on national television?

I watched football during the commercials. Then I went to sleep sometime during the 4th quarter and woke up long after it had ended and turned off the TV. I like football, but not every matchup appeals to me.

It's especially hard to watch a Sunday Night matchup that I don't care about because the ESPN announcing crew is so bad. Very, very bad.

Tim McCarver also made the comment today that "only" 28% of homeruns were hit with two strikes on the batter. Ok...that would mean 72% come from either 0 or 1 strike counts. Split evenly, that would mean 36% come from each of the other two counts. THIS is a telling statistic?! I'm surprised it was even that high...

I wonder what share of all pitches come with two strikes... might well be below that 28% figure.

I'm more partial to giving them a break, they're just announcers.

anybody ever hear frank caliendo (stand up comedian) do his madden impersonation? it's golden. a couple of tracks on one of his CDs is devoted to a madden/summerall conversation. check it out sometime.

but some of it is so accurate, it's scary, like, "to me, great football is when two teams are playing great football, and when the two teams aren't playing great football, well, that's not great football, but today, these two teams are playing great, and that's what makes great football great."

I dont mind Madden at all, to me he's like your crazy grandfather who has some valid points but can also be a bit crazy. It's the younger guys who are more like your annoying Brother in law who need to point out every little thing that happens and spend obnoxious amounts of time stating and restating the obvious because they think theyre a scholar on the damn subject that annoy the hell out of me.

That's Phil Simms defined. Man alive, he beats me down quicker than no other. He can't stop spewing for 2 seconds. Phil, sometimes silence is ok! Anytime I turn on a CBS game, I immediately mute it and flip on the AM radio to find the radio broadcasters.

It just so happens that when I'm watching sports is the time when announcers pick to launch their weak commentary.

Go figure!
