OK, let me make this clear right now:

If the Broncos sign Leaf, Crouch, or McNown, I'll won't watch a Bronco game for the first time in about 15 years.

It's sad too. . . all Denver needs this game is a QB who won't make a stupid mistake. Their defense is good enough to shut Baltimore down provided they aren't on the field for 40 minutes. Jackson won't give them that and they'll probably lose.

Isn't this one of the teams that thought they didn't need a third quarterback?

Who's the Mastermind again?

Well, a couple of things about that. . .

1) Shanahan told Kanell that if he got a call from another team, to call Denver and he'd be signed. Essentially, they had their third QB already, he just wasn't being paid.

2) Shanahan had never went through more than 2 QB's in a season in his tenure here.

3) Rod Smith was a QB in college and could sub in as a third QB in an emergancy.

It isn't like Shanny didn't have a plan.

I had Buerlein on my fantay team last week, picked up Kanell on Sunday night, and now I'm screwed. Although I do have Rod Smith on my team! Wouldn't that be funny...

Yea, especially if he slung the ball for 300 yards to himself...Which raises the question: Would you get double points for that?

Yes, I've gotten point for RBs that threw passes and QBs that caught them.

Yeah, I had a QB get points a few years ago when he threw a pass that was batted at the line. He caught it and ran for about 15 yards.

My guess is Kanell will be ready to go on Sunday.

As a big Broncos fan, I'm calling out Doug Nussmeier. Yeah, his last stop in Denver was grrrrreat.

At least they're not going to go with the old Billy Joe tandem that the Saints had during the Ditka era.

TroyF,

I'm not trying to expose you here...but I've been to Missouri Southern games. Rod was not a QB in college. Rod was a WR. A good one. Trust me, I have followed Rod's and James Thrash's career since they've been in the NFL. Rod even had one of the rare 6th years in college.

I even know Rod's first catch...in an exhibition game against the 49ers.

No offense, buddy, but wherever you got that is probably wrong.

Nope. . . he started his freshmen year as a QB there. Moved to WR that year. Was in the top three of the depth chart there as well, though he never saw actioin because of how good he played at WR. He's always been the Bronco emergancy QB ever sinse he set foot at Dove Valley. (the Broncos training complex)

I did some checking, and he did actually throw some there. I couldn't believe it.

What does surprise me is that he's been the emergency QB since he got there. Call me crazy, didn't he spend a year on the practice squad before he finally started playing?

edit: i was off...it was one year on the squad.

Yep, he was a practice squad project. He'd have been moved up had the Broncos ever got desperate for a week or had another team had offered him a contract.

Shanahan fell in love with the guy from the second he practiced. They spent a year developing him and he took over. I still remember him breaking off a long one against Kansas City in the first week of '97. That was his first year starting. Many of the fantasy services as well as the pundits thought the fact he was caught from behind on the play proved he wasn't fast enough to be an everyday WR. All he did was catch 69 passes for over 1100 yards and 12 TD's that year.

I think he's one of the most underrated players I've ever seen in the NFL. He's every bit the WR Keyshon Johnson is and he never complains about not getting the ball. He's a class act through and through. Also one of the best blocking WR in the game.

TroyF

Oh yeah: I know my football players, feel free to challenge me anytime.

I know Rod, and Thrash...but I suppose I didn't know him that well. What I knew? That the man was a stellar receiver in college, but I was afraid that a team wouldn't give him a shot (wasn't drafted) and that his injury (broken leg, as I recall) would scare teams off.

Seeing that preseason (and I still got the tapes ) made me fear he'd be cut. He was a gunner on punt coverage and was pretty horrid at it. He had just one catch the whole preseason. Off to the practice squad worried me as well. How often do undrafted free agents go from the practice squad to starter in the NFL?

I suppose often, since it's happened for both Smith and Thrash . Still, I was more than happy to see Smith excel. Didn't he have a hail mary TD catch against...the Redskins on a Monday night game (maybe Sunday night) for his first catch?

Man, I was excited for him!

Actually wasn't a hail mary, even though it happened on the last play of the game. It was a Sunday afternoon game. They lined him up on the side opposite of the trips receivers. He was in man coverage. . . the man who was covering him? Darrel Green. He jumped over him in the corner of the end zone and won the game. (the game was 31-31 and would have went into OT had he not made the catch)
