That happened to me last season. Cheetum and the Superstars lost the last match of the season, 12-0, in hopes of not promoting.
He still finished in first, and still auto promoted? My reward? He finished almost right at the promotion line, giving me a bot team. ![]() Maybe giving me 1st place in the process. ![]()

Arghhhh!
If the showdown of the top 2 teams going into the final week had gone the other way, I'd have a 0-point team from IV. Now, it'll be the champion from last season or a mid-60's team. Damn.

ae, something similar happened to a guy I know in another forum. The first place team in his division (Nerdlebert) professed an interest in not promoting and threw a game. Unfortunately for GOFAB, and fortunately for the guy in question, Nerdlebert was careless and forgot to check the autopromotion line. He wound up just a hair above it, taking him out of V and giving the guy in question a walkover team.

I know cheetum and the Superstars are part of our group now, but I was sad that they chose to throw the game. I just don't see why it should be in anyone's interest to throw a game.
The inherent nature of any game is to win, right?

Some people will say that if you are not ready to go up, you'll lose a lot and end up demoting and finally lose a season... I've made my point clear on this many times. Thou. Shall. Not. Chicken. Out.... Given a chance to promote, I'll take it every time. It's a game and it's not like I have a huge personal investment in it. What if I get my ass kicked 13 times out of 14 game in the season. That one time will have made it worth it. FM

Much as I bitched about my division this year (IV.57, 3rd in D4 via Hatstats) and told people how lucky they were they get to play qualifiers, I would never throw a game.

I'll add my hat to this ring...
A guy in my series (here after referred to as RMF) let me have a game so we'd get out of our tie for first and I'd have sole possession. His rationale was that he'd just demoted from div IV and didn't feel ready to go back. In our series, he's been plagued by injuries this season, though has only been posting 60ish NSI. He didn't want to promote, I wanted to try it, so I let him give me a game. That said, things didn't work out exactly as planned and I ended up losing to a different team in my series (here after referred to as Wildfires) towards the end of the season. This took me out of the auto-promotion zone and put me into the "needs to play a qualifier" realm. Looking at who I'm supposed to play, I don't stand a chance. But hell if I'm not going to MOTS it and give it my all anyway. I suppose I can see why some people might not want to promote, but in my mind, that's like some of the real soccer teams around here (in the local beer league I ref and used to play in, among others), who are really division 1 or 2 teams playing in division 3 to get an ego boost out of winning. ~tk

Very true! Remember the Q-game the Raiders played against the Irish FC?
Irish took the lead early... 4-1 lead by the Raiders at the half. Raiders win it 5-4 as the Irish stormed back. I was worried I'd lose. Because of this match, I was worried I wasn't ready for D4, either.
