Thinking about totally re-doing the "FOF Journal." Want your thoughts...

In light of the fact that the old board appears to be dead and gone, (Ryan has contacted the powers that be, but to no avail so far) it certainly seems that the FOF Journal needs a complete re-work, considering that 80-90% of the links in it are now dead, and probably for good. I'm thinking of making it into a more "FAQ"-oriented thread, with links to a multiplayer clearing house thread, whatever sections we put game plans in, but also with explanations of "in-house" stuff like "dola", "colossal squid", etc. I'd love input on how to format such a post.

I've saved some of those threads, I'll have to check when I get home, but some can be found here:
http://hem.fyristorg.com/kristian9/FOFJournal/

The rest are in a zip file on a CD I burnt when the old board started to sputter. We could easily transfer the files to the FOFC server...

Maybe like this.

FOF QUESTIONS:

Q1.) [text]

A1.) [short answer] and link to thread discussing more or to web-page (like solecismic) with relevant information.

FOFC QUESTIONS:

Q1.) [text]

A1.) [short answer] and potential link.

You can edit the post to add new questions as they come up. I would certainly make the top post a post that only the moderator can edit. (though I guess that would happen anyway if it were a mod post.)

I like the idea of the forum regaining a focus on FOF the game. If we can help Jim be successful by steering potential customers right, then I think we are doing a very good thing.

I'll offer stable web space to house the information, if needed.

OK, I'm home - I found this zip file with 53 pages:

Why don't we add a FAQ Forum at the top of the General Discussions (kinda like what Paradox does for their games)?

I've always liked how they set up their FAQ's. Easy to find specific information that you might be looking for.

I'd like to see something like this. I'm new to fof and these boards and have done searches trying to find some of the simplest info for the game many times having to read through several threads and still not have an answer. Sometimes a new guy almost hates to ask on the board because it seems the info would be so basic and you almost feel like you are being iritating.

An example of something I haven't been able to find that I've tried doing a search for is what the ratings really mean and how I should value a player based on them? Is 50 considered an average player or rating for a specific skill? How bad is a cb that's rated 18 against the run? Is a cb that's rated 50 against the run the same as a lb that's rated 50 against the run? When I did this search trying to find this info I believe it came back with 27 pages of threads to look through

So maybe there could be a thread on ratings, finances, drafting, etc all in the faq.

Thanks for listening.

However it's done, somewhere at the top there should be a reminder to read the help screens in fof by hitting F1 at any screen. This is where you can find the most detailed information about ratings and how different things work. I'm one of those who usually doesn't bother with help files because typically all they say is "if you press the exit button, the dialog box will close, etc." -- not real helpful. But FOF has a very good help system -- it's more like a pretty thick game manual.

SkyDog - Here is a copy of the FOFC Dictionary from the old board. I copied it over earlier in the year. It could use some formatting, and deletion of some non-relevant posts. However, the information is there and is pretty good.
