I'd have to concur, that the group play was the most fun. The thing is, we have to plan it so far out. . . Last year we didn't, so a single elimination was the only way to go.
Another thing...with our teams developing, we may have more than a few who last past 4 cup games. |

Since it is an odd cup number and the Gargoyles have already won Cups 1 & 3, I figure that I would be favored to win Cup 5.
![]() I'm in! I would vote for Group Play as well. It keeps everybody in the cup a lot longer. However, as our teams get better, more people will be in US Cup longer, thus we will have less time to run the cup . . . After looking at the schedule I would say that the cup should start on January 7th (equivalent of 9th round in the cup or week 8 in league play). With an 8 week cup schedule, we could fit it in with the final being the Wednesday after Qualifiers. We could run the cup in a couple of different ways, depending on number of participants. I say that we stick to that schedule because, also if we start earlier, people may be out of town/away from their computers for the Holidays, so they may not have a chance to accept invites in time, etc . . . Proposal 1: 64 teams - Top 64 teams, who are not in US Cup when FOFC Cup starts AND have signed up for the FOFC Cup, based on FM's rankings. 16 groups of 4, top 2 from each group makes, playoffs of 32, which is single elimination. Total: 3 weeks group play, 5 weeks playoff. Proposal 2: All takers - Divide the teams up into groups of 4, arranged on FM's rankings. Unlimited # of groups, however top 2 teams from each group are not guaranteed. Top team is guaranteed to make playoffs of 32, second place teams fill in the 32 based on points and goal differential. Total 3 weeks group play, 5 weeks playoff. Let's hear some other ideas. ![]() |

We'd have to consider walkover's too. I remember last time, that was an issue. Some teams got 5-0 walkovers, and skated in, which, if we were an antagonistic bunch, would have caused strife. Still, the walk-over thing has to be addressed.
I'm in favor of proposal 1, however, if there are enough signups, I think we should move to proposal 2. Starting with 1 does not exclude moving to 2 if there is enough interest. Oh, and the Aves are in too. |

Oooohhh! Just had a cool idea!
Run it like the World Cups in HT! Top 4 finishers from last year(or from FM's ratings) get a bye. All others have to enter the qualifiers. 3 Weeks of qualifiers based off of FM's ratings, whittling it down to 12 qualifiers, plus 4 byes. 3 weeks of group play based off of qualifier results. Top 2 teams make it from each of 4 groups to the semifinals, ranked on their pts and goal diff., 3 weeks of playoffs. Total 3 qualifier, 3 group play, 3 playoff. We'd have to start it on the 31st of December, however. It would accomodate 100 teams - 4 byes, 96 qualifiers. Or we could do 2 qualifier 3 group play, 4 playoff. This would accomodate 104 teams. 8 byes, 96 qualifiers. If we can't fill the qualifier slots, qualifier teams can have byes based off of FM's rankings. This would give the better teams an extra week to lose in the US Cup. Last edited by Raven Hawk : 11-11-2003 at 06:53 PM. |

Um I thought there was going to be a poll attached to this one. Either way, I'll be in this year (last season I decided to skip it, and I miss my FOFC matches).

What's an FOFC Cup without Galesburg doing what they do best?

-Panther, the problems with walkovers was this: it really biased your group if you had a walkover. Very few other games were 5-0 wins so those teams got huge advantages when choosing the "wild card" teams. The suggested remedy last year was to make it something more like 1-0 or 2-0 because 5-0 just set goal differentials out of whack.
I'm still on the fence about the FOFC Cup until we get a format. I'm really enjoying going international every week for friendlies so it all depends on how long it will take. SI

I really don't care too much about the actual score awarded, but I do think that if we get stuck with group play that one failure to schedule in time should cause walkovers to be awarded for the entire round.

Fantastic Flying Froggies are in for a 3rd year in a row. To get its ass kicked for the 3rd year in a row...
PS : Sterlingice, there are some non US teams in FOFC, so your issue about international games might be a moot point... EDIT : Oops, forgot team ID : 175873
