Need some advice
I am a sophmoore at Niagara University, for Hospitality, our program is great (in the top 5/6), but I am unhappy with the academics of the school (jus the requirements), and just unhappy with the money I pay to go here, its not worth it. I am looking long and hard at the University of Houston. Houston's program is stellar, and the requirements and academics are more in line with what I want to study, and the facilities look good. Plus, Houston seems like a cool city (I love DFW up north in Texas), and the UH seems like a big college that offers many things.
What are your thoughts? Any Coug alumni? |

It's your money.
Where is home for you? Would Houston be far to visit friends and family? Do you like the Niagra area? What do you plan to do after school, also have you thought about where? How are your grades? Which program has a better reputation in the real world? There aren't any wrong or right answers to these, if you feel that your money is best invested elsewhere then do it. |

Don't know anything about either school...but, if you aren't happy...gotta take steps to change things...plain and simple.
Just make sure you do your research and don't just jump ship and end up in an even worse pile of do-do. |

Ugh. I live in Houston, its nothing like DFW, where I used to live ;- )
Its got the nickname "armpit of Texas" and it sometimes deserves it. UofH is downtown pretty much. Meaning long drive to good living, high priced living, or really crappy close scary living. And the humidity.....Yikes.....do yourself a favor and find the next best college for what you want to do.

I have no idea what exacly you mean by "requirements" of your course of study - but you mention it twice, so it must be an important factor to you. That doesn't sound much like anything that was important to me when I considered courses of study.
What I do know about the U of Houston is nearly 20 years old, based on a visit there when they were recruiting me to be an engineering student there (their efforts were in vain). At that time, they were just launching their hospitality program, and I know that their golas were to get up and somewhere in the shadow of a school like Cornell within a generaltion or so. If you're already in Upsate NY, have you considered Cornell? To the best of my knowledge, it's the premiere school for this stuff, even if the 'tellies don't engender a lot of respect on campus from the astrophysics and classical philosophy majors. All told, though, Fritz's advice sounds pretty good, too. Go peel some potatoes. That ought to get you primed for a career in hospitality, or whatever they're calling it these days. |

Well...can't join the army.
What's wrong with asking advice?Cornell, is an IVY League school. I do not have the grades, nor the money, to go to that school. Many people at my school are unhappy with the way the school is run. Our school is one the top, but I am not happy (besides having a decent social life, but thta is due to good friends) |

I went to college in Galveston (45 min. south of Houston) for a year. Would not recommend Houston. The murder rate is higher than NYC or DC, racial tension is extremely high, weather has periods of unbearable heat/humidity.
Granted, I went to an A&M, but we referred to UofH as "Houston High". Went there once for some test thing, and wasn't impressed. Now, if you were asking about Rice, I would advise differently. But I gotta think there are better options in any field than UofHouston. Still, you're right to try to find an alum. Suggest changing the name of this thread to reflect that.

Thats guys. I found some other programs as well, Florida International, Georgia State, and a few others.
I just am unhappy with the school. The people I am around are poor, rude and unmotivated. The classes stink. The governing body of our school is not consideration of the students. I feel that I am paying $24K a year for a junior college level education. Also, our hospitality program is big on hotels. I more into foodservice and restaurants. |
