FOF2K4 STRATEGY: Freeing up cap room

If you're finding yourself strapped for cap room each season, here's a tip that will help you free up a couple million or so (although I've had it free up 10 million plus in some kind years):

At the beginning of each season, when the FA period begins, open your roster screen and sort by contract cost. Then, beginning with the first player, check the negotiate contract button. For a significant enough number of players, they will request a lower contract for the season--if not the life of the contract--than you are currently paying them. This is especially effective with players who have 'lost a step' due to age or injury.

That's a fairly time-honored tactic. At the same time, be careful with that - if they're asking for significant bonus money, after a few seasons it becomes impossible to do anything with the contract.

Josh: Enough youngin's around here that it bears noting. If only to record the fact that in the fifth iteratation there's still a way to steal dollars from the fists of those that have earned them in trenches of frozen tundra and RealTurf (tm).

I know it. I wouldn't have posted anything 'cept for the fact that it seems MUCH harder to deal with the cascading bonuses after a few renegotiations this time. It still works, but it generally is a much more limited tactic in terms of successful usage.

Just as there is in real life, if you don't renegotiate, you get cut.

I like the fact that in this version, renegotiating isn't always the sure-fire path to dominance that it used to be. See my "Welcome to Cap Hell" thread.

If you combine renegotiating with backloading it is an easy, easy way to dominate indefinately.
