OT: Xbox Live and XSN
Just curious how many of us are on Xbox Live, and of those, how many have an XSN-enabled title (NFL Fever 2004, NBA Inside Drive 2004, NHL Rivals 2004, Amped 2, Links 2004, and Top Spin are the current titles).
I have Top Spin and Links 2004, and I was thinking of setting up an FOFC tournament in one of the two, but I wanted to know first if there was enough interest on the board to warrant doing so. Any takers? |

Mota - excellent. Links has been my addiction lately, I'm always glad to find new people to play against.
EDIT: My gamertag is Rincewind. Last edited by SackAttack : 11-22-2003 at 07:02 PM. |

Bah, wish I could get broadband here, and then get Live.
I think Top Spin would be a frigging blast to have a tourney in. Hopefully in a few months I'll be in! |

Got Top Spin here, although it's rented through GameFly. I'll keep it long enough to play in the tournament.

I have an Xbox, but no XSN games. If an FOFC tournament is started, that may be incentive enough for me to pick one up.

It seems nearly certain that there'll be a tournament of *some* kind - you can have as few as 8 players, or as many as 64, depending on the game in question.
It's just a matter of scope, and I'd like to pull off a huge one, if we can. |

Just a quick dolabump before i head off to work. If SkyDog or any of the mods read this, any chance we can get a sticky on it until we get a better idea of what kind of participation a tournament would get? Thanks.

My current XBL compatible games are...
Top Spin Links 2004 ESPN NBA NHL 2k3 Music Mixer Rainbow Six 3 (FANTASTIC!) I think that's about all. Gamertag is kingneb, and I'm usually on after 1 AM EST (I've been RS3'ing a lot lately). Feel free to add me to your lists ![]() |

I was GOING to get MotoGP 2 for my next GameFly rental, but I may have to bump Links up in the queue instead. We shall see.

No BIG rush on that, because we still need enough players to fill a decently sized field anyhow.
The 'volunteers' so far: Links 2004 definites - SackAttack, kingnebwsu, Mota Links 2004 'maybes' - gstelmack, Pumpy Tudors, SirFozzie Top Spin definites - SackAttack, kingnebwsu, Pumpy Tudors, Sir Fozzie, Mota Top Spin 'maybes' - Calis, gstelmack C'mon, folks, the more the merrier. An 8 player Links tournament wouldn't be nearly as much fun as, say, a 64 player tournament. Step right up, step right up! ![]() |

I have an XBox, but I dont plan on getting Live until sometime in January when I move.
What Im curious about is how long a games shelf life is in online play? Im sure I can hop on and find people to play me in a recent sports game or RB6-3, but how easy will it be to find people who are playing something like crimson skies in a month or two? I guess Im just wondering if the number of gamers on live can keep up with the number of games that are now being live enabled. |

Depends on the title. Regular sports games tend to have a shorter shelf life than those with the ability for online tournaments (such as the XSN games). Shooters are more cyclical. New shooter comes out, the casual community tends to migrate. The exceptions, I'd wager, will be Rainbow Six 3 and Halo 2.
As far as vehicular combat games like Crimson Skies, keep in mind that MechAssault still has a robust community. As long as significant content downloads are made available for those sort of games to keep them fresh, they'll keep getting played. FWIW, Crimson Skies puts MechAssault to shame online. |

Thanks SA, that sounds good. I have never played online, but I will be looking forward to testing it out in a month or two.

No problem. Just keep in mind that the support an online title gets from the developer is as important as the quality of the game itself. If there's no consistent, significant content download, it's probably going to do a slow fade. Keeping an online game fresh is essential to maintaining the userbase.
There are some titles, I suspect, that will have smaller userbases (Links 2004), but perhaps a longer consistent lifespan because of new course downloads, and such. We'll see how it shakes out. |

It's interesting that folks are beginning to sell updates via XBox Live, as the new XBox game Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix is making online "Song Packs" available via online purchase and download (5 songs for 5 dollars)

I'm not completely convinced that pay-to-download content can consistently keep communities fresh. DDR is probably a bit different from the norm there.
I'll be interested to see if Links charges for course downloads, or if they do it the way DDR is doing it and release several courses as a pack for $$. |

Paying to DL those songs? I guess I wouldn't mind if I could pick the songs from previous DDR releases. But since I have a legal DDR emulator on my PC with virtually all DDR songs ever made, I won't be getting Ultramix...and I kinda wanted to

They have to pay for bandwidth, storage and all the like, and they couldn't charge less then $5.
Plus it's all legal ![]()

Since you brought up shooters. Has anyone played Counterstrike on the XBox yet? I enjoyed playing it in the PC but cheaters made the game boring, and it looked like it could be a good game to play on XBox Live and possibly a game that could be popular in a SOCOM type of way |

I played some Counter Strike yesterday.
Pretty good. I would only recommend it if you intend on playing online with this game, the single player is lacking. The weird thing is that yesterday I was always either the best or the worst player in the game, never in the middle. Strange how that can happen. |

Up, up, damn spot. C'mon, we can't have a couple thousand members and only six Xbox Live users in the bunch, can we?
