Preseason and playing time

When you set your depth charts etc and you select the playing time of a player, is that number enforced in preseason games as well? I would like for a regular rotation to occur with my players and their positions but am not quite sure how it's done.

I guess, in simple terms: Is giving a guy an 8 for PT going to leave him in a preseason game for more drives etc than a 2 would? I'm thinking that the # is aimed more for whether or not they'll replace G1 for G3 if offense 1 is still on the field?

I'm just confusing everyone.
