Jimmy Smith
Why did he play for Dallas in 1992, take two years off and come back in '95?

He had some peculiar abdominal injury (appendix?) that caused him to nearly retire (I seem to recall it may have even been life-threatening at one point). When the Cowboys pushed him out, he filed suit against them (or perhaps just a claim under the NFL and/or CBA rules) to try to regain some lost salary -- the split was not amicable.

If I remember correctly, he had medical problems. There was something seriously wrong with his kidney, I think, and no team wanted to touch him. He worked really hard to come back, though, and he's obviously made a very big impact since his return.

After the medical problems he signed with the Eagles in '94 and was cut a day after final cuts. Didn't sign with anyone until the Jags picked him up the next year.
