Do you have great memories?
My best memories have all come through sports games as a player. One of my greatest memories though would have to be a basketball game. It was my junior year in high school and we had one loss coming into the game(17-1). To give you an idea of why it was such a great memory; we were down by 15 points at the end of the 3rd quarter and the game seemed to be over.....
Here's the article(it's a local paper): http://www.zwire.com/news/newsstory....D=1132&PAG=461 I'm #14 in the pic... The game I'm talking about is the 2nd part of the article. It doesn't give you great detail like some dynasties would give you, but it still gives you an idea of why it is such a great memory of mine. Do you guys have anything to share with the rest of us? I have more, but I'll limit myself to one for now. Last edited by mauchow : 12-06-2003 at 11:20 PM. |

I made the winning basket in a one point win over my teams arch rival in the championship game of the tournament to decide the top team in the area. I also got a hug from the cheerleader with the big boobs after the buzzer sounded and everybody rushed the court.

Hah! Well, our cheerleaders were all ugly, with the exception of one, whom I lost my virginity to. Might have been that night too, I can't remember

My favorite line in that football article....
"With some renewed confidence, the Bulldogs managed to pick up a first down, but then were again forced to punt and again French got a hand on the ball. " |

A little. I just moved here this last summer. I'd consider myself more of a Gopher fan and a NDSU Bison fan (from Fargo).

All I have to say about Paris is this....
"Let's fill these milk jugs up with water to make this go faster." By the looks of it the milk ran out just as fast as the water did, so why would it make it any faster? She said that in the last show... Okay... Now let me take it another step further.. She also said, "Let's hide these so we don't have to do as many." Okay, she took about 10 minutes finding hiding spots for them. She could have filled 'em up faster. I'm not attracted to stupid bimbos who look at themselves for 3 1/2 hours before they go outside to talk to a few hicks. Whateva though. |

Barron, WI.. yes
I turned down a scholarship to play football there.. One reason being the weather just plain sucks up there during football season. The other reason being; I wanted to play baseball in college. And I still am, so no regrets yet, but I do miss football sorely. Last edited by mauchow : 12-06-2003 at 11:54 PM. |

Since I was the same size I am now (albeit much lighter then) as I was in 6th grade (5'8") and my birthdate was mid-August, putting me right at the cutoff for moving to the next age group, I kinda peaked athletically between 6th grade and 9th grade by dominating kids who were younger and smaller than I was.
In basketball, I remember playing one game in 7th grade in which our team won 42-36, and I scored 38 points. In baseball, two games stand out. The first was a game in which I threw a one-hit shutout and hit 2 HRs to dead-center and a third that bounced off the top of the fence for a double. The second was a game we played against the undefeated team in our league, second-to-last game of the year, and we beat them 9-3. I had an awful game hitting, but the rest of the team - even the kids who had never shown an ounce of ability - came to life, and I struck out 16 guys in 6 innings to win the game. I still remember the star player for their team being royally pissed that we won, and his father, who was the coach, refusing to come out of the dugout to shake hands. I still have the game ball. It was huge news in our small community. I'd have to say, though, that my most memorable moment in sports was a baseball tryout I had when I first moved from Texas to Georgia as an 8th grader. No one knew who I was, and they had us do a number of fielding, hitting, and throwing drills for the managers of the league, so that they could determine who they wanted to draft. I took my turn fielding at SS, and the first ball the guy hit to me, he accidentally hit as a line drive over my head, instead of as a grounder. He immediately yelled "let it go," but before he could finish, I jumped higher than I've ever jumped in my life, snagged the line drive, then threw a perfect strike to first base. I got drafted #1 based solely on that (fluke) play.

That is exciting though.. I do have memories that do go back as far as 5th grade, and they're all from basketball tournaments.
From 5th grade up to 8th grade we had a rivalry in Chetek. During winter basketball tournaments, we'd always play each other in the championship games. All the games were always great ones, and each team won a fair amount of tournaments. So as a whole, 5th-8th grade basketball is a great memory. Our skills panned out better than theirs and they never beat us in Varsity basketball. But luck went their way and they got to go a division lower than us in the state tournament. So they did end up making it to state, only to lose in the first game. It was cool watching a team we beat twice in that season to make it that far though. |

The lake actually keeps the winters a lot milder than the surrounding area. If you think it's cold here then you don't know cold. Try Fargo. It has the same wind but it's stronger since there's no hills like there is in Duluth. |

While we're on memory lane, I'll share one of the worst memories I've had in sports..
It was last spring. I play baseball at UW-Oshkosh, so we're in the same conference as UW-Superior. We had a game up there and I tell ya, when we got there it was about -12 degrees. Just freezing. We sat in the dugout waiting for the other team to shovel the snow off the outfield(Well some of it). While we watched them shovel, we got to see some pretty fireworks too as they started the infield on fire to dry it up a little bit. Yeah, lots of fun. We played two games that day. Not fun. A week before that game at home(Oshkosh), we had to shovel our WHOLE field the day before a doubleheader. We hand shoveled the infield, while a truck got a majority of the outfield. THAT was BAD. We shoveled for a good 8 hours the day before, and a few hours before gametime. Luckily our coach was smart and made the redshirts, and non-starters shovel. So my work was minimal on game day. During that game, we got to wear stocking caps over our baseball hats. That's how cold it was. Ridiculously cold. Last edited by mauchow : 12-07-2003 at 12:09 AM. |

I never was a great athlete, but...
My best memory (so far) in sports is probably my senior year of high school playing soccer. I was always pretty good, but took a sabatical from about 7th grade through 9th grade, which killed any chance I had of being a solid player. Nevertheless, I kept working hard, and found my way into a starting role my senior year. So our team was awful, but we still were competitive in a few games (our team was in what was BY FAR the strongest soccer conference in the state of New York). So we had a night game versus our crosstown rivals, who were actually pretty good that year. We were getting dominated, and losing 2-0 the whole game. With about 10 minutes left (40 minute halves) in the 2nd half, we got a long free kick that I read like a thing of beauty and put home after it squirted through the tiniest of holes of the defense. We still lost the game, but the goal was pretty inspiring. And it was in front of a big crowd and shit, which was nice too. Playing rec league hockey my senior year of high school (after having not played from ~6th grade through 11th grade - before then I wasn't too bad) I had three nice moments. First one was playing a team from a long ways away, who had shut out our league's other team like 8-0 the night before. Halfway through the third period, they were doing the same thing to us. You could tell they were really, really enjoying their shutout. So anyways, the puck was in our defensive zone, and they were controlling. Suddenly, it popped loose, and I made a nice move sending the puck off the boards to myself. I was in on a breakaway... I made a nice cut to my backhand, but planned the whole time to read their goalie's movement. He did as I thought, leaving a HUGE 5-hole, and I one-handed the puck through his legs for a pretty goal. I could tell the other team got really pissed about losing their shutout. Sure it made their 4-hour drive home that much less fun. The 2nd moment was versus our other house league team (who we played at least 10 times, so had a pretty good rivalry with). I did a nice give and go in the neutral zone with a defenseman, and made just a power drive to the net. I was not going to be denied, and somehow put home a one-handed backhand shot over the goalie's left pad. It was the ultimate goal resulting from sheer determination. I didn't even know the puck had gone in until I was behind the net and saw it from that angle. And this, although it didn't result in a goal, is probably the one I'll remember most. Another rec-league game... We're getting killed (this was the game with the above breakaway goal, actually). I pick up the puck at the neutral zone dot, and head into their zone. I make a Mighty Ducks-like lower-the-head sidestep around one defenseman, and then put it through the other one's fucking legs. I'm in alone on goal, and of course miss the net after totally having the goalie beat. Nevertheless, the two moves that got me there were just incredible. As I said, I was far from an elite athlete, so that's about the only things I have. Hopefully at some point I'll get another chance to play a competitive sport. *sigh*

Things can happen if you work hard at it.
I didn't play high school football until my senior year of high school. Well I did play freshman year, but I didn't try out until halfway through the season, so I played in 3 games with very little playing time. Anywho. I went out for football my senior year and was named all-state WR 2nd team, along with all-state special teams. I wouldn't say I worked my ass off to be successful as I'm very gifted talent-wise(Thanks mom and dad). I've finally taken ahold of my skill for baseball and I'm looking to be drafted by some MLB next spring. I've gotten a lot stronger since my freshman year of college and I'm finally fit to get drafted. Last edited by mauchow : 12-07-2003 at 01:08 AM. |

Yea' it's sort of an opportunity problem for me. I'm transferring from Georgia Tech next semester, where I currently play hockey. I'm not good, and get very little playing time, but definitely see an opportunity to improve. If I were coming back I would certainly work hardcore on my skating over the summer and be a lot better for next season.
Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to do that and prove something to myself, transferring provides too many benefits academically and financially to stay here. Maybe at some point something will come up. *sigh*

You've got to have some skill to play hockey at GT, although they aren't as prestigious as some of the northern hockey schools. You play, that counts as something. More than a lot of people can say.

Greatest memories are all of baseball, since that was the only sport that I was good at (I could shoot well in basketball as long as that was all I had to do).
- Winning the city championship in little league. I was 3 outs away from a perfect game in the deciding game of the series and a pitch got away from me and hit the batter. That was the first batter that I ever hit and it must have gotten to me because I seemed to hit the wall at that moment. After giving up a couple hits and a run, the coach moved me to first and brought in one of our other pitchers to close it out. The win is actually the best memory, regardless of missing out on the perfect game. The clearest part of my memory is the team sitting around McDonalds after that win. Of course, there is some sadness to those memories. Two of my team-mates from that team were killed before even graduating high school. One in a 3-wheeler accident and another getting hit by a drunk driver. - That same season, the division clinching win. I was at first for the last out, which was a ground out. I remember spiking the ball and getting mobbed by the team storming out of the dugout. Jeff, who was pitching, got mobbed by the players on the field and eventually we all became one mob. It was a great feeling after starting out the season 1-2 and then winning out. |

So many good ones...off the top of my head:
First day of PE, Senior Year in high school. I had been cut from the school baseball team, and we didn't have PE until Senior Year (private school), so no one had seen me play ball before. I think I should have made the team...anyways, I get picked last when we start to play softball... My first at-bat, I hammer one into the gap in left center, and manage to score before they can throw the ball in (we had no fences). My second at-bat, the outfield scoots back a little bit, and I hit another towering drive, this one to left field, and get another Home Run. My third at bat, they back up even further, and I absolutely cream the ball, straightaway center field, and I get ANOTHER home run. My fourth at bat on the day, I know it's going to be my last at-bat, and I decide, for some strange reason, to bat left handed. I've never batted left handed before in my life. The stars align, and I hammer the ball over the right fielder's head for my fourth HR of the day. Needless to say, I was picked first every day for the rest of the year ![]()

my eyboard is all messed up lets see if you can guess which letter doesnt wor.
my greatest memory is from hocey senior year of high school. first off we won conference for the first time in our school history so that was awesome to be a part of. secondly was our victory in the playoffs over northland pines. we had played then twice in the regular season and both games went into overtime. one was a tie and the other we lost. so we went into the playoff game looing for some paybac. it just so happened that we won the playoff game and ended their season. priceless.
