Computer Graphics Design

Is anyone here a computer graphics design artisit by hobby or trade? If so, I am interested in finidng out more information about the field. What programs do you reccommend when designing graphics? How is the best way to learn? I am majoring in computer programming and I believe the best way to 'spice' up a program is through graphics. That is my reasoning in wanting to learn. That and I also like pretty websites. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Graphics that you see in like OOTP, CM4, and prett ymuch all of .400 Sport sims. I am slo looking to do web graphics such as banners etc and team logos.
