OT - Giants LB tries to bump Millen off front page

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Mired in the midst of a six-game losing streak, the New York Giants have shown questionable ability on the field. After Sunday's 45-7 loss to the Saints, linebacker Mike Barrow showed questionable judgment off of it.

Barrow, frustrated by New Orleans' dominance and the Giants' lack of competitiveness, used a rape analogy during a postgame interview to describe how he felt about the team's performance.

"I feel like I've been just violated," Barrow was quoted as saying in the New York Post. "I don't know what it is to be raped, not to be insensitive to people who have, but to me, this is my experience [of what it is]. It feels like they just held us down and just did whatever they wanted to us. It just felt bad."

Now that one is just odd. As he was talking, it occurred to him that this might not be a smart thing to say, so he went right ahead and said it.

Why does the media even bother talking to athletes anymore?

I'm getting tired of reporters waiting for athletes to say stupid shit like this and then plastering it all over the front page of every newspaper and internet site there is.

Yeah, those damn reporters and their post-game interviews. I'm sure the reporter asked Barrow if there were any particular type of horrific crime he could think of to compare to the loss.

Granted, this one just screams for the women's groups to howl in protest, but damn ... he's not allowed to make an analogy because he's not a woman? Or because he's never been raped.

To anybody with half a brain, it's pretty clear that the comment was made in the vein of "this is as close as I've ever been to being raped".
That this was "the most helpless feeling he'd ever had", which he likened to rape in that sense.

It was _not_ in the vein of "this is as bad as being raped".

The latter? Okay, that earns him a spot in the "WTF Were You Thinking" Hall of Shame.

But this? Looks like there's some damned bored reporters out there with too much time on there hands.

On that same note, be sure to remember never to compared a kidney stone to childbirth if there's a reporter present.

That'd be insensitive to women who've given birth.

The shit is getting old. Its become the big thing now in news. An athlete says something that could offend a certain group of people and it gets all over the news. The NFL doesn't exactly have the smartest group of people, you have to take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Did I infer that it was the reporters fault that he made the comments? No, of course not, its his own fault. But I really don't think this is news worthy. At what point do we say enough is enough?

Actually my wife has had kidney stones and also birthed a child.

She says the pain of kidney stones is the only thing comparable to childbirth that she's ever felt. So you're clear on that one.

As for Barrow's comments, they are definitely under the incredibly stupid category. A football game and rape are on two separate, incomparable scales. And intelligent people know that. I'm actually more entertained by the stupidity necessary to make this comment than anything. I'm sure a rape victim might not feel the same way.

This seems to be on par with Kellen Winslow's comments about being a soldier. A game is a game, real life is real life. Some analogies, while apt (as analogies go), are best left unsaid to a room full of reporters.

You assuming that "ass raped" is only offensive to male rape victims offends female "ass rape" victims. Please edit your post to a PC compliant nature.

You're both assuming that only human male or female victims of unwanted sodomy are offended by this, and thus are offending donkeys who are victims of rape. Please edit your post to a PC compliant nature.

I think it's interesting that we have no problem with:

"They're getting killed out there today...!"

You can insert alternate murder word (slaughtered, massacred, etc.) and no one will bat an eye. This is much different than the 'fag' comment in my opinion. It's nat newsworthy at all. At worst, it's just an unfortunate analogy.

I agree. it's very different from the slur incident with Millen. This is just someone making a questionable comparison, and ultimately an ass out of themselves. It's different from trying to intentionally degrade a specific person or group of people.

This just sounds like hyperbole to me, being blown out of proportion just to sell newspapers. It's like if you say, we got killed out there today or they kicked our asses or beat us badly. You're not litterally comparing it to murder or assualt or somehow being insensitive to victims of those crimes.

This world is getting scarier by the day. I mean, we as a society are becoming such pussies that we can't say or think anything that might ever offend anyone.

Why don't we just get this all over with, skip forward 10 years or so, and put the "Sensitivity" microchips in our brains now? No need to waste time since that's what it seems most of the sheep in this country want anyway.

The cry of America:

FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS OUR BIRTHRIGHT!!!!!!!!! BUT IF YOU HURT MY FEELINGS, I'LL CUT OUT YOUR TONGUE!!!!!!!!!!!

was it an episode of Southpark where they put an electrical chip in Cartman so he'd be shocked whenever he said a bad word? Maybe that's the future. I can see it now:

Barrow: "I feel like I've been just violated" bbbbzzzzzzz Ouch!!!, you @$%&#@#. Like I was saying, I don't know what it is to be raped, not to be insensitive to people who have, but to me, this is my experience of what it is. bbzz---wait, wait... What I mean is, it feels like they just held us down and just did whatever they wanted to us. It was bad. bbbzzzzz bbbzzzzz bzzzzz Agggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

and he crumbles to the dirty floor of the locker room flopping like a fish out of water while being electricuted for his insensitive remarks.

I had some painful losses in sports growing up, and you have that period right after where you're just kind of half out of it. I could imagine myself saying something similar to this (making an overly unnecessary analogy)if I was constantly asked questions after each one, and my every answer recorded.

1500 players and this is the worst thing they could find A complete non-issue, not that anyone here is making it one.

Barrow deserves what he gets on this one.

Certain words, phrases, and analogies are obviously taboo and should immediately send off a red flare when someone misuses them. Don’t offer the sing-song, knee-jerk “oh no, politically correct” shrug just because our society has gone too far in other aspects. If he had used the term differently (i.e., “we were raped and pillaged out there,” which at least has a historical usage implying violation and destruction) and left it at that, perhaps…but he went out of his way to state: “I don't know what it is to be raped, not to be insensitive to people who have, but to me, this is my experience [of what it is]. It feels like they just held us down and just did whatever they wanted to us. It just felt bad.”

I think it’s important that our society makes it very clear that the use of such “unfortunate analogies” is grossly inappropriate. Rape is a violent crime that traditionally has been downplayed by our male-dominated world. Analogies such as this one, equating it to a humiliating loss in a freakin’ football game, only trivialize the pain and suffering. Truth of the matter is, IMO, I don’t think anyone has any concept of that kind of violation unless they’ve been a victim of it. What I know for sure is that “It just felt bad” doesn’t cover it.

Dictionary definition of rape:

rape1 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rp)
n.

1. The crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse.
2. The act of seizing and carrying off by force; abduction.
3. Abusive or improper treatment; violation: a rape of justice.

So, if a guy simply says the Giants were raped by the Saints, then if anybody whined and complained they could rightly be pointed to the dictionary. Only thing Barrow did wrong was not know that he could use the would rape without sexual inference so he added. Makes him dumb, not bad.

I just came across this story from the BBC, which is interesting to compare to what Barrow said:

Blatter condemns European clubs
Blatter is furious with the behaviour of Europe's big clubs

Sepp Blatter has accused Europe's richest clubs of 'despicable' behaviour and engaging in 'social and economic rape' as they scour the developing world for talent.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/africa/3326971.stm

Here is the meat of what he said:

Blatter added: "Europe's leading clubs conduct themselves increasingly as neo-colonialists who don't give a damn about heritage and culture, but engage in social and economic rape by robbing the developing world of its best players.

"If we're not careful, football may degenerate into a game of greed - a trend I will vigorously oppose."

In the past, many African players promised untold riches by unscrupulous football agents have been greatly exploited by the very people who are supposed to be looking after them.

The phrase 'football slavery' was even coined to describe footballers who ended up living in poor conditions and on insufficient salaries many miles from their homeland.
