OT: Computer Problem (CD Drive)

Neither of my CD drives (I have a DVD drive and CD/DVD+RW drive). Neither recognizes any CD's that I put in them. When I double click on the D drive (DVD), it says "D drive not accessible.. incorrect function".

When I double click on the E drive, it opens, but nothing appears in the folder.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

After a restart, the drive seems to be working. But this has happened more than once. Any advice?

Hmm...that is an odd one. Sorry, but I can't think of anything. Maybe a driver issue...I dunno.

What OS are you running? It's been a while since I've done hardware but I'll see if it's something I can take a shot at.

The cheapest test would be to run a cleaner in the drive to see if the lens is dirty and not picking up the CD/DVD. I doubt this since it was 2 drives that went bad at once, though.

Another idea is to atempt to reinstall the drivers, that's usually a good place to start.

It also may be the controller, if that went bad, or a cable (if they are piggy backed), it could cause them to both have problems at once.

There are probably people that have more hardware knowledge than I currently have so that is about the end of my suggestions that could be helpful.

Thanks for the advice. I'm running XP (Home). I recently made a 1,000 mile move, with my computer. I packed it up very securely, but I suppose loading into and out of the box could have done some damage. Would that relate to the problem I experienced at all?

Thanks,
~kyle

That might be a lose cable caused by the move (again, just a possibility). That could make it pick up some times but not others.
