Ping: Heavy Reign/ Re: Computer Recruiting
I was looking at computer teams' rosters tonight, and it caught my eye that a lot of the teams aren't using up their quota of scholarships.
For example, in the Ohio Valley Conference, where I am now, this is the breakdown of the teams and the number of scholarships they are using: Austin Peay: 8 (unused: 5) Tennessee Tech: 11 (unused: 2) Tennessee-Martin: 13 (unused: 0) Illinois-Chicago: 7 (unused: 6) Alabama A&M: 13 (unused: 0) Southeast Missouri State: 8 (unused: 5) Savannah State: 11 (unused: 2) Tennessee State: 4 (unused: 9) Similar results can be found throughout the computer teams in my current game. Most of them seem to be leaving schorships unused (they all get 13, correct?), and some of them appear to be running programs with predominantly walkons. Is this supposed to happen? Do different teams have different numbers of scholarships available? There have been three or four years so far when I've held on to a last scholarship because there was no one decent left in the recruit pool, but I have trouble seeing how it makes sense to leave so many unused. |

I thought you only got to use 12?

I can use 13 scholarships on a 15-man roster. *thinks of RPI-fan playing the game for all those years while leaving a scholarship on the table each year* *giggles* Last edited by Godzilla Blitz : 01-05-2004 at 12:10 AM. |

There are a couple things that would cause this. One is a bug that caused a lot of the JC players to never sign with a school. Schools would keep recruiting them and then never fill the scholarship. The other is coaches that aim too high. Also, teams don't always have all 13 scholarships in use. Lets see how it works after the jc fix and then I can take a look at tweaking something if necessary. This is probably more common in the lower conferences.

In all honesty, I think assuming there are 12 scholarships would be easy to do, though. If my first team had 12 scholarship athletes on it when I started, I would have just always assumed that I could only have 12 players with scholarships. If you have an extra one left, and the spot is filled by a walkon who is not graduating, you have to cut the walkon for the game to record your scholarship as "available". This might be something that would benefit from a slight change, perhaps? It would probably be nice if the game listed the number of total scholarships you have available in recruiting, but then if you offer one that would cause you to exceed your roster limit, you could get a warning telling you that you must cut a walkon in order to offer the scholarship? Mr. Bug: What's the 8/5 thingie? |

Dola...
HR, thanks! Has the JC fix been incorporated into the latest patch yet, or is that something in the works? I'll be sure to patch my game, and I'll take a look at it after a few more years. |

Can't remember if that was in the temporary patch that is up or not. I've made the fix to the build on my computer so it will be in the official patch.

GB, 8/5 is an NCAA rule in men's basketball where a team can only give out five scholarships in one year period, and eight in two.
I hadn't realized it was in the game, but looking back now, I see that it must be. In my current dynasty, I am running Prairie View A&M, and when I first went there, they were both short scholies (they had ten scholarship players), and had 7 players graduating. Despite that, I only had five scholies available to give out, even though it would result in a drop in team scholies from ten to just nine. I have been able to build the scholies back up through the years, but it was quite an obstacle to overcome in the beginning. CR

You can only sign 5 players in 1 year and 8 in any 2-year span. I think it's in the game. |
