Civ Question

Hey, I recently got Civ III Gold. Civ III, of course, has been out forever.

Anyway, there are numerous patches for the Civ III versions, but none listed for Civ3 G. I am hoping that means it didn't need any, but I'm not foolish enough to believe that.

Basically, Civ3 Gold is the original Civ III and the Play The World expansion set. I haven't looked closely at the Civ folder yet to be sure, but my understanding is that PTW is incorporated into Civ III in this (as in I might not be able to find a Civ3 PTW .exe). I don't want to download a patch for Civ III original alone, or for PTW alone, apply it, and screw up my game.

So I thought I would ask if anyone here has already gotten this and has some suggestions for what patching, if any, I need to do. Thanks.

Thanks, finkenst.

I did check the Civ III site first. Nothing there to help me (at least int he downloads section). I also checked out Apolyton, the big fan site for Civ. Figures that I have to go to the company Web site to be told there are no patches at this time for Civ3 Gold.

well, even looking through the civ3.com site, there aren't any patches... also, isn't the most safe source for whether a patch exists the publisher's website?

no problem.. i was just at infogrames to look for civ3 regular patches 10 days ago.

Actually, my assumption was that the official Civ III Web Site would be the right place to go for patches. That (the game's official Web site) is where I look for patches for all my games. This is the first time that approach has failed me in 10 years of downloading patches.

As for there being no patches there, if you know what Gold is, you know it's not that simple. Civ Gold is a combo of the original Civ III and PTW, and there are patches aplenty for those. Since there is no clarification on the official site for what is (or is not) available for Gold, but plenty of patches for the constituent parts that make it up and no indication if they are supposed to be used for Gold, there seems to be plenty to question there.

Fortunately, you were around to help me out. Thanks.

hehe, no worries...

of course, if civ3:g is really just released then the PTW patches were probably included in the build, but who knows.. drop a message on the civ3 board.

franklinnoble's dynasty thread made me consider installing civ3 and playing some.

Civ3 Gold needs no patches. It's as good as it's ever going to get, and from what I've read on other boards (www.civfanatics.com, www.apolyton.net), it's not ever going to be patched.

If you want to stay in the "upgrade chain" you have to buy the Conquests expansion. As far as I know, there are no patches for that version (yet), and I've played it for about 7-8 hours total (single and multi-player) with no issues.

I recommend the expansion if you like the game, just because it gives you more Civs, more technology, more wonders, more units, and more resources.

You better hope Bucc doesn't see this thread. He'll go into convulsions at the mere mention of Civ-III.

Just be ready with the "Gothic II" antidote.

Can you combine Conquests with PTW? Or do you have to choose which one to use?

You can.

Conquests actually includes all the stuff that comes with PTW. You can run it just on your base Civ3 install... it will automatically patch you up and give you all the updates that PTW came with, in addition, of course, to all the new content.

If you already have PTW, it just patches you up and adds the Conquests features.

I've installed it both ways, and the result is the same either way.

Conquests has PTW in it already. I didn't know this when I bought Gold, otherwise I might have gone with Civ III and Conquests (might have been more expensive, though).

Franklinoble, there are already a couple patches for Civ 3 Conquests. I would go to the official Web site or to Apolyton to get them. At least one is a beta patch, though, IIRC, so be careful.

The cheapest route would have been to buy the Civ3 "Game of the Year" edition (if you can still find it - I see it on shelves from time to time) and then slap Conquests on top of that. I think maybe you might have saved $5 or $10.

Didn't know that... thanks! I generally don't bother checking for patches unless I have a problem with the game, and Gold+Conquests worked great out of the box for me.

I just checked... the current 1.02 patch only fixes some problems for foreign versions of the game. The upcoming "real" 1.13 patch (not the beta version - I'm not touching that) is expected to fix the following:

Quote:
* Fixed Random Civ [multiplayer] Launch OOS
* Adjusted Corruption Calculations
* Capitals (Palace, F[orbidden P[alace], P[olice] H[ead] Q[uarters]) have very little corruption
* Max Corruption is now 90%
* F[orbidden P[alace] & S[pecial] P[olice] H[ead]Q[uarters] now give 50% more cities to your optimal city count (This makes it extremely valuable to the [artifical intelligence])
* Secret Police H[ead]Q[uarters] no longer gives effects when player leaves Communism
* Updated Civilopedia.txt Forbidden Palace to explain that all cities are still affected by distance from the Real Capital.
* Fixed Credit Typos

Got all this off www.apolyton.net
