Trev Alberts' commentary on the ESPN website is just hilarious. God, I wish they would fire his sorry ass. Can't stand him.

He makes me sick, too. I didn't see it, did he talk about how this is a great hire and will keep Nebraska in the top echelon of college football programs?

Of course! How you shouldn't put much stock in the player mutiny in Oakland, because they're pro players and authoritarian styles don't work in the pros!

I just want to punch him in his giant neck.

I dunno... on the one hand, the Raiders job is the worst head coaching position in the NFL. On the other hand, Callahan left there looking like a little bitch. Nobody wanted to touch the Nebraska job. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I love this move, it all but guarentees at least 3-5 years of nebraska sucking wind and not having to hear about how awesome a team they have even when they still run a 1950's offense....

did I mention I hate nebraska?

This should be interesting. They don't have the players to run a "Pro" style offense, but yet they hire a Pro style offensive coach (he wants to throw about 60-70% of the time). This should be great watching them fail. Payback time from a Penn State fan (although thats a totally different story).

I wouldn't accuse Callahan of running a "Pro" style anything in Oakland last year.

Solich got fired for going 9-3, and Callahan's going to do better with his players by switching to a pass-happy offense.

Riiiiiight.

Didn't Pete Carrol stink up the pro's as well? Maybe its a lot easier to go from pro to college than college to pro for coaches...

If you were Bill Callahan, and NU's 4th choice after Houston Nutt (Houston Nutt!!!), what's that tell you?

The funny thing is, Trev talks about this giving them credibility, and I think that the AD probably thinks the same thing. Does anyone else get the feeling that hiring a guy who is recently seen as a complete joke in the NFL makes Nebraska kind of a laughingstock?

Like I pointed out in the other thread on this subject - the Falcons passed on the Steelers' defensive coordinator because the Steelers fired him, and Atlanta didn't want to deal with the PR nightmare of hiring a guy that wasn't good enough for the Steelers. Here, although we're talking college vs. pros, given Nebraska's lofty reputation and the circumstances surrounding Callahan's firing, I can't believe Nebraska could think this would come across as anything but desperation.

The guy might do a good job, who knows. It may turn out to be bad timing. But considering the Raiders situation unfolded over the past 3-6 months, as opposed to 2-3 years ago, this makes Nebraska's choice at this point in time look very questionable.

I think it's a great hire given Nebraska's needs right now - a coach who is a great recruiter (Callahan was regarded as a very good recruiter from his days with Wis and Ill) and one who has the guts and talent to revamp our offense.

Based on his press conference, I expect Callahan to try and move full speed ahead towards implementing a large portion of the WCO in Lincoln by fall. Would not be at all surprised to see NU bring in a juco guy like Okla did with Josh Heupel given our disastrous recruiting season to compete for the starting job with Dailey.

As far as the Raiders this year - Callahan was widely regarded as an outstanding position coach and coordinator before taking over the HC duties. The same players that bitched about him this year were raving about him last year. I tend to think that prima donas and injuries doomed the silver and black rather than a previously highly regarded coach.

Can anyone point to successful implementations of the WCO in college ball? I can't. Callahan will be gone in 3.

And to answer the question about Carroll...he was an average HC, and a great DC.

I'm not sure there's been a coordinator/coach who was so successful with the wco in the nfl who has gone to college to implement his system. Several college teams are running or say they are running a west coast offense, but I can't say any have a coordintor close to Callahan.

Callahan made a comment that he wanted to implement what he had learned about moving the ball in the nfl at the college level and I'm sure he understands that implementing the wco at Nebraska will be tough. He seemed to look forward to the challenge and I think we'll have a better idea how successful he might be when he names the assistants that he is bringing in. I'm expecting a completely new offensive coaching staff with a solid "name guy" to serve QB coach.

Wow! One year removed from the Superbowl, and just about everyone thinks he is a complete disaster.

Is it the greatest of hires full of fanfare? No. But are they getting someone who can take the offense into the future? Yes. As a Husker alum, I am "intrigued" by the decision. I am in total anticipation of what the offense will look like next year. Even if the team drops in wins, but looks good, I will be happy. I am willing to give Callahan a few years to get his own players in there.

I also think NFL and College coaching is a BIG difference. Recruiting v. salary cap; pros v. kids. Let's face it, the Raiders have always been a cuckoos nest. Frankly, all I have ever heard from the situation is a bunch of whiny pros that got upset when things went bad. Maybe Callahan didn't handle it the best, but so be it.

I think Carrol (bad for the Pats as a "players" coach; good in college), Spurrier (good in college, bad in the pros) are examples of prejudging success or failure.

All I really want is someone who can gameplan in Nebraska and it sounds like that is what they got.

Out of the pot and into the fire. Maybe Callahan just likes being comeone's bitch. Owner Davis or AD Pederson it will be the same all over again for Callahan. Someone upstairs calling all the shots; Dictating what offense you run, who you hire, and who you recruit.

Solich led Nebraska to a 10 win season this year and was fired for I guess not brown nosing Pederson enough. I am sure Callahan will not make that mistake this year. Let the back seat driving begin.

I wonder how many ADs can dictate what type of Offense and what type of players you recruit . I can't wait till Kansas starts whipping up on Nebraska.

On what do you base your idea Pederson will interfere?? I disagree.

And finally for the last time, Solich wasn't fired for only winning 10 games. They lost to everybody they played that was good. And he was a terrible recruiter. Pederson had the foresight to realize that if he let Solich hang around until he finally went 6-6, it would be way too late. He had to nip it in the bud.

I've got to agree that hiring Callahan might not be the train wreck everyone seems to think it is (and I'm no Nebraska fan). If Callahan can bring the Nebraska offense into this century we might see an Oklahoma-like resurgence in the Husker's fortunes.

Oh he's terrible. During Half-Time of the Outback Bowl He started talking nonstop about how Kirk Ferentz should go to Nebraska. Even though Ferentz had said just a couple weeks before that there was no way he would ever coach Nebraska.

Would it be too hard for him to stop taking it in the butt from Nebraska and actually be nonbiased?
