TCY: QB dilemma

Look at my two current BYU Cougars Quarterbacks and please tell me which one you would start in game #2 this season. I'm losing patience with my longtime starter but have no idea wether or not the other can be the answer to my woes.

Broderick Winslett
Pros:
is the experienced one, a starter since his freshman year, he has earned All-Mountain West 2nd team honors twice.
Has the potential to make the plays.
Cons:
Has regressed for the past year and a half. Season 2007 was awful and his 1st game of the 2008 "redemption" season was one of his worse games ever.
Is a senior with no eligibility left

Dean Fisher
Pros:
Was the nation's #1 high-school prospect at the time of his recruiting !
Has two years of eligibility left.
Cons:
Has barely played so far, his two starts were miserable which brings more questions than answers as far as "is he the one to lead the team".

If you don't like the current guy, there is only one way to find out how the new guy will do. The fact that you are asking the question means that it is probably time for the new guy.

I'd say play the second guy and then maybe gear your offense more towards the run so he isn't as much of a factor. If he does well, then let him loose!!!

Looks like you need a new coordinator. How is he on QB development? I had almost the same thing happen and I benched the QB. He's now the starting QB for the Cowboys and beat my Lions in the NFC Champ game...

A question - how good is your scout in assessing QB's? If you want to win this season, I'd stick with Winslett if this scout is reasonably accurate. If your team continues to struggle with Winslett later in the season, then try Fisher. Assuming you're giving Fisher a reasonable amount of weight lifting and film study, he should continue to develop in the offseason and be fine for next year.

As an observation, what kind of offense are you running? How good are your receivers? What are your passing distance settings?

I ask this because looking at their scouting reports, you should be getting better numbers out of them than you are, especially the completion percentages.

Man, I can't remember the last time I had a QB have declining QB ratings for 4 straight years. Most of my TCY QB's are 3-4 year starters, too. Dude, maybe you wanna check out your offensive settings and such. Compare them to what the scout recommends. I find I'm doing better going more toward what the scout says than what I think is good. I usually find a balance 'tween the two, more towards what he thinks.

Both guys look good, but I'd start the current starter and mess with the settings. If he still sucks, then bench him

- My scout is "very good" in assessing Quarterbacks.
- my Offensive coordinator is rated "Excellent" in player development for QBs (but has only been in the offense for one year).
My former Offensive coordinator (who was here the past four years) was rated "Excellent" as well...I went back to previous saves to check that.

My receivers are pretty good but just like the QBs, they haven't developped up to their potentials...that's frustrating.
below is a screen of Larry Zamora, my top WR. He missed all but 3 games the previous season because of a season-ending knee injury. However, he has been a two-time All Mountain West 1st team WR, and an All-Freshman in the NCAA. Since then, he has declined just like the others.

Hmmm. Looks like Zamora's problem has been injuries - otherwise his production has been outstanding.

What kind of offense are you running?

Just as an FYI, I generally get QB's with potential ratings similar to your 2 QB's. I run an I-formation offense, and my pass distribution settings are as follows:

Screen: 17
1-10: 44
11-20: 23
21-30: 10
31+: 6

My play percentage settings are as follow:

1st	67	67	72	57	
2nd	62	67	42	47	
3rd	77	31	22	26	
4th	79	30	17	15

My QB's almost always have pass completion percentages in the 60-70% range, average yards per attempt in the 9-10 yard range and passer ratings from 150-200.

What kind of development settings are you using for your QB's? I usually like to have the weight training set to at least 9 and the film study at least at 25, higher for both if they don't have a girlfriend and/or are smart enough that their study hall setting is low.
