Talking A proud daddy...

Well, that first night home is over, the second one already went much, much better...

On the morning he was to be discharged from the hospital, Sunday morning, kiddo came down with a light case of jaundice. Doctor said that since we were past the first 48 hours of life and that it was a very light case, it was not a reason to keep him in the hospital. So off we went, Sunday around noon time, in the middle of a mini snowstorm Later that afternoon, he got to "watch" his first Patriots win with his daddy, oh the fun we had He doesn't get all the concepts, but I'm sure he'll get to it eventually...

The first night that followed, from Sunday to Monday, was absolutely crazy. This is our second child, so it's not like we never went through the first night back home, but this one was absolutely crazy. My wife has decided that she wants to breastfeed him, even though she didn't breastfeed the first one. They had warned us that the baby may be growing through a growing spurt on the 3rd day, and it hit pretty hard that night. He was absolutely restless pretty much all night long, asking to be fed about every 2 to 2 and a half hour. Why we knew he wanted to be fed? well, he was almost literally eating his little fingers and fists, munching the air with his mouth wide open... Don't know how many how you know about breastfeeding (for baby that is, I'm not talking about grown men trying to feed themselves that way ) but every 2 hours is tough on the mommy. Yesterday was used to recuperate, every minute we'd succeed to get him to sleep was used for a nap for us... Today is much better. We actually had to set our alarm clock to make sure to wake him up every 4 hours to feed him last night. Reason for that is that hydratation is the best way to get right of that jaundice, and that orange tone of his skin...

Anyway, here are two pics i found just enough time to scan...

Matthew himself, the new star of the house

And here's one of him and his daddy, proud as can be

Truer words were never spoken! Mom's a star for it, too.

congrats.

i remember that first night home from the hospital. a long, long night - we ended up taking turns sleeping/holding the baby all night long...finally headed up stairs to bed around 7am the next morning.

sounds like he and mom are picking up the breastfeeding pretty quickly - I was amazed to find out that babies aren't very good at figuring out what to do on their own. it was several loooong, frustrating days before Graham really got the hang of it.

That first night of ours was pretty much like that. A few dispersed naps during the night and a whole lot more naps during the following day. Last night, his second, and today were a breeze compared to that first night.

About him picking up the breastfeeding, I gotta say, he had some amazing sucking ability *insert your favorite Arizona Cardinals joke here * from the beginning. At first, it was my wife who had more problems aligning him right, and as you may know, a baby that's not aligned right, or that is not sucking it in the right way, well it's gonna lead to more and more hurt for the mommy...

Don't remember who said it, but yeah, that episode will be something we'll be telling again in 20 years from now...

I'm glad I helped you feel better in some small way, and I'm really glad everything went well with the pregnancy and delivery.

Again congratulations

Congrats FM. Had to show the wife the pics since she has that baby obsession most women aquire after having a child.

I'll give you a quick overview of my situation when my son was born.

I was stationed in Germany when my wife was pregnant and due to circumstances beyond my, or anyone's, control had to send her home at 7 months. I was only allowed 14 days leave after the baby was born because of everthing that happened following Sept. 11 so we decided that instead of me trying to guess when the baby was coming that I would wait for "the phonecall" and get the 1st plane available to North Dakota. Well, about 7:30am on January 15 2002, I got the phonecall as I was walking in the door from PT. Within 4 hours I'm on a plane from Frankfurt to Fargo. After 9 hours of flying and a couple of layovers I get into her parents house around midnight.

The 1st time seeing your child is one of the most overwhelming experiences one can imagine. However, on the 2nd night I quickly found out what being a parent is all about. Around 1am my son woke up with a belly ache. Jetlagged, just flat out exhausted, with a wife recovering from a rough time in the hospital, I made every attempt at getting him to stop crying and finally was rewarded with a sleeping baby at about 4am. The couple hours of sleep I got after that may have been the greatest sleep of my life.

I will say that getting zero sleep for 14 days, adjusting to a 6 hour time difference 2 times, and not being able to sleep for a week after returning to Germany was well worth it.

There is no better sleep in this world then that which comes after walking the floor for hours with a fussy baby.

The baby quiets down...you sit on the couch...you slowly lay down on the couch...baby is snuggled on your chest, drooling on your shirt and making soft baby-snores.

Just like the old beer commercial said, "It doesn't get any better than this."

Congrats from a father of three. Good luck with the others too (these things always happen in twos and threes (and fours and fives...))
